George....... I agree. Much of the songwriting came from Jack Blades as a form of job security. He felt that if he was writing the song he couldn't get fired from the band.....The guy is very smart and was thinking in a shrewed business like way. And it worked too.......
I'm a drummer and have been for a long time. In my early years as a drummer my father for some reason gifted me a Brad Gillis album(gilrock ranch). Upon first sight I privately thought : why am I given a guitar solo album when I'm an avid drum freak? After only hearing the opening guitar lick to stampede I instantly thought: oh boy I've a whole lot more music styles to learn to play to! It blew me away and the influence a guitarist and his band Has had on me priceless. Thank you father for surprising me with something I'd have never sought for myself but am greatful was shown to me
Without a doubt......the most underrated guitar player of all time....deserves ten times more fame and fortune than he achieved...not saying he is a failure at all....just that he is one of my all time favorite guitarists!
I had a Brad Gillis instructional VHS tape when I was a kid. Wore that damn thing out. He does a trick in which he makes the guitar sound like a race car shifting gears. I’ll never forget it.
I saw you with OZZY in Offenbach Germany early 80's and everyone came to see Ozzy but more for you. One of my top three guitarists ever. Thank you for your hard work. It shows.
I am a huge Randy Rhoads fan. He is and always will be my guitar hero. However, Brad Gillis is an awesome guitarist. He played Randy's stuff really well even though he had to learn it all in a hurry in addition to this stuff. Plus he took at lot of crap from the fans. I couldn't had done it.
Like many guitar-playing teenagers in the 80's RR's style and talent pushed me to dedicate myself to playing versus going out with friends. So I was devastated when RR died. When I heard of Ozzy's new live album Speak of the Devil was being released I was mildly disappointed it wasn't with Randy. But it did introduce us to Brad Gillis and his style. No one I knew was critical of Brad I think because he didn't try and replicate Randy's play. It's sort of weird but his replacing Randy and touring with Ozzy brought us fans closer to him and Knight Ranger.
I could say a lot more about this guy, but what I always come back to is the sound he has on Speak of the Devil is being one of the heaviest sounds ever, as is Ozzy's voice. The first track alone (Symptom) is just this monster wall of sound that I've never heard duplicated; along with the cover art it's just the scariest shit ever to me that will always stick in my brain. Kudos also for Brad learning all this shit in a day and making it his own - never stepping on Randy's shoes. He is a real original and great performer.
Gillis has forever earned respect with any real musicians for his work replacing Randy Rhoads and being part of one of the most electrifying guitar duos in rock history.
Brad Gillis is like the guy you grew up with in the late 70s to mid-80s, who liked to barbeque and drink beer and jam and rock out to Van Hagar. I know a lot of guys like Brad Gillis!
I'm 47 years old and have listened to music my whole life never knew this guy existed never knew he saved Ozzy's ass.. what an amazing talent can't believe I didn't know about him until 2022
I always remember getting the Ozzy album"speak of the devil" with Brad Gilli's, and I thought he was fucking amazing! Mad sounds! Considering that randy had just died....he was and is an outstanding guitar player, big respect mr.gillis!!!!
Man me 2!!!!! Randy the master just passed & my brother brought home speak of the devil 😈 and FUCKING wow the gutiar was just loud and rude he went into different solos on the some Sabbath songs but it worked great album great memories!!! I totally agree
I remember being so sad that Randy died and ended up buying the sotd album and thinking man this guy is really good to be playing these Randy songs. Brad is definitely underrated for sure.
I was born too late!🤣 Man I only caught the tail end of all this. Guns N'Roses was just coming along and changing everything when I was coming of age. This kind of music was out on the periphery, then we found Metallica and Megadeth. Then Grunge came. Now I get to go back and discover all this great stuff in my mid 40's. Still great music and musicians. I'm so inspired by this.
I have chatted with him twice..a true pro and a helluva guitarist. He plays some crazy stuff..but the melody is there, too. The band has done some great recent music that is often overlooked.
Brad is great. Awesome guy in concert. I saw them in St Louis last year at a small venue. Some of the softer Night Ranger stuff is tough for me not to cringe, but when he soloed on Don't Tell Me You Love Me, I knew I was in the right place. Best 80"s solo ever.
Yes I also read somewhere said Brad had about a week to learn all Randy's solos and Ozzy's songs. That's amazing. He never got the appreciation he deserved. Not even from Ozzy
Ax.......Here's an extra bit of info to fill in what you might not know. Just before Night Ranger (Ranger was their first name) formed, Brad was in a cover band called The Alameda All-stars. Their band specialized in taking requests of any rock song from the audience and then coming back and playing it the next night and doing it justice, not hacking it as some bands might do. He is what is known as a quick study. You heard him say he would play along with the radio as many musicians can do. He was able to keep up because of his personal training and music prowess was sharp, and still is.
The trick he does at 9:45 spot took literally took me out of my Randy depression. I was in 7th grade when Randy died and had recently convinced everyone I knew that Rhoads was the best (EVH was considered untouchable) by whoring out those 2 Ozzy albums as proof. I saw Ozzy during the Blizzard tour and the Diary tour had Ozzy playing in Miami with Foreigner and UFO. Randy died the day before and I was devastated. I had to stay home from school a couple of days. It was like losing a best friend and him dying in FLORIDA the day before was just too much. I first heard Speak of the Devil and Dawn Patrol soon after and Brad became God on the strength of that whammy trick NOBODY else did. I had yet to ever even play a guitar but someone gave me an acoustic at the end of 1982 so I learned a little.
I've always been obsessed with originality. I heard "Speak of the Devil" and "Dawn Patrol" not long after. Way later in hindsight I got to see videos of Brad playing Randy's solos almost note-for-note but adding a slight touch of his own sound. When "Blizzard of Oz" first came out I thought Randy was pretty badass but I was not obsessed with him. I was pretty blown away seeing him live but I was bummed about the new rhythm section. When "Diary" came out 2 1/2 months after the concert Randy took it further with "Over the Mountain" and "Believer" (which I remembered from the concert mainly from the opening bassline). I thought the album was way better than the debut. At that point I made it a mission to preach the gospel of Randy to anyone who would listen.
here after stumbling upon hear n aid, wanted to know about brad grill , but just his first few words tell me all I need to know. right of the bat he says, 'one can't really master the guitar , there is a lot to learn"
This guy doesn't get the respect he rightfully deserves. He was incredible guitar player he with a couple more guys such as Gary Richrath Bernie Marsden don't get the respect they should.
Saw Night Ranger opening for Kansas years ago in nyc...I only knew their hit...but I have to tell you the way this guy played guitar was really great....had incredible command of the instrument
Great stuff. The story about the Ozzy tryout is fantastic and I like how he's so honest about his style. The duel lead guitars of Night Ranger is so great and unique in rock and roll.
best gillis interview i have seen, more informative than the guitar mags I have read. I always thought the body was a mighty mite as said in one guitar player interview. I could be mistaken.
Brad Gillis is one of the GOATS. I TOTALLY agree with Brad that when the record company "made them go ballad" is when I stopped listening to Night Ranger. They were a kick ass rock band, not a ballad band. Sure, they could write and play anything, but c'mon Brad played with OZZY and was my favorite.
100000x thank you very much .. i am come from Hong Kong.. and heard about brad because of Ozzy ... and it is a first time i found a interview of Brad Gills . it's really rare ... thank you for upload this .... thank you
Man when I first heard his playing on speak of the devil I freaked out I thought who is this dude he just put new meaning to these songs like I’ve never heard before I mean incredible I played that record to death fucking awesome!
There is a reason why Ronnie James Dio call him to play on Hear ‘N’ Aid (Dio said he liked his style) and there is another reason why Ozzy choose him in a time that he had Bernie Tormé and even auditioned my favorite George Lynch. Brad’s loyalty to his mates in Night Ranger, took away from his heavy metal reputation.
Brad's really good.great fat strat tone, and just bends and twists those strings into submission.he has mucho ballage to fill in for rhoads in ozzy and even more nuggets to leave and go back to his buds in ranger.he always gives everything he has and makes no apologies.kudos

Hi Brad, Wow interesting and funny story. Years ago we were playing a club in Dana Point Harbor California and a patron gave me his card and said to come by the studio. I didn't and about a year later we were playing a Bonnie Raitt cover tune and I was looking for the lyrics. When I flipped the album over the first thing I saw was the patrons face Fritz Richmond. True story, sad but true. Now at 65 I think I've told that story to everyone I know at least once. It's not as interesting and funny as your conversation with Ozzy's wife (or ex wife). By the way Night Ranger is one of the few bands where you have two exceptional guitarists each capable of being a star in any successful rock band. Thanks for sharing and reminding me to change my strings.Post more on how you evolved into Night Ranger.....Thanks Again.
That's exactly what I used to do I used to listen to the songs and figure out the the key of the song on the Baseline once I figured out the the Baseline the notes and then you can play around that with the rest
Anyways, my youtube channel "smittyhewasnumber1" has a few kinda rare live Ozzy/Brad gigs. He was a awesome player with some really sweet melodic runs. He was real good at making spooky noises with his guitar during the Ozzy shows. I was really bummed out when I first heard the Bark at the Moon record on the radio. I could tell from the first minute or less that it wasnt Brad on guitar.
Night Ranger, one of the 80’s bands with real musicianship in the performance and songwriting department.
George....... I agree. Much of the songwriting came from Jack Blades as a form of job security. He felt that if he was writing the song he couldn't get fired from the band.....The guy is very smart and was thinking in a shrewed business like way. And it worked too.......

He's always been highly underrated

When people say underrated this is who they mean!
Brad learned Randy’s part in 4 days and he felt he needed to improve a lot of the solo’s. Randy triple tracks to hide imperfections.
Yeah man, Brad is a beast.
@@hyutyub funny how people slagged Brad for using a Floyd on Randy's solos. Randy used a wah and Brad used a Floyd. BFD
They mean, there are so many great guitar players, they are hard to rate. I think a lot depends on if you like the style they play.
Brad is NOT underrated. He is highly respected in the guitar world.
Gillis has forever earned respect with any real musicians for his work replacing Randy Rhoads and being part of one of the most electrifying guitar duos in rock history.

I love Brad Gillis and what he did with Ozzy in Speak Of The Devil. It's the masterpiece of the heavey metal live concert.
It's my favorite OZZY album.
Brad is a GUITAR GOD, PERIOD!

Brad is so entertaining. Haven't really followed him but I love him.
Absolutely one of the best.
"I've been playing 27 years. And I'm only 24". 🤣
I got to hangout with Brad after a show in the 90s he was very cool and a huge influence. 👍✌
He demonstrated humility and honesty by saying you never master the guitar and you get out the time you put in. Both are SO true. Great player btw.
I'm 47 years old and have listened to music my whole life never knew this guy existed never knew he saved Ozzy's ass.. what an amazing talent can't believe I didn't know about him until 2022
