    I went to a rock beach today and I find a few of them but they were all green. I was hoping for a variety of colours. But I’m going to Florida soon so hopefully I find lots at the beach.😬🤞🏾

    Checking out your webpage (which I really love, btw! ) and the vids, I was wondering if you have or are planning to do any of these adventures up into Whatcom County? Thanks for all the informational help you give!

    • @timblair3004
      @timblair3004  7 років тому

      I typically don't get up to Whatcom County and really haven't spent time exploring that area. My primary focus has been out here on the Olympic Peninsula. I live in Port Orchard so this area is more accessible to my home. If Whatcom is your home then maybe you could start exploring the beaches there and provide some guidance for outsiders who might want to explore your area! Every beach is a wonderful place to explore and worth the experience!

      The Port Townsend area and all beaches are open to the public and free for beach combing. The Glass Beach area, as it is called by locals, is remote and requires a 3 mile beach hike from the closest parking lot and only when the tides are right. So, it is not highly visited by people. At the height of summer I've counted maybe 20 to 30 people out there and many are just walking the beach. The sea glass is sometimes obscured from sight by the many other rocks and not so easily seen as on the other Glass Beaches in California. So, for now there doesn't seem to be any restrictions on this beach in Port Townsend, WA. Thanks for the great question.

    Thinking about doing the trip by kayak this summer... Launch near your parking lot there, ride the outgoing tides west, search the beach awhile, then ride the incoming tides back east. Have you seen others doing the trip that way?

    • @timblair3004
      @timblair3004  6 років тому

      Jim... yes! last summer I did see a family kayak out there. I was around McCurdy Point at the Glass Beach area then a family of three kayaks came around the point and beached themselves about one to one hundred fifty yards down past the point. Right at the point there are numerous large boulders. So, I would recommend going down a short distance and you will find some good beach areas to put up onto. I've also thought about doing the same thing with my wife but haven't tried it yet. Have a great trip and look for me out there. I usually go out on Mondays!

    thanks for posting this info. question. how did the quality glass, get there on this remote beach (2.7) off the beaten path? You mentioned aged glass 50 or 60 years. placed? dumped? inquiring minds need to know.

    • @timblair3004
      @timblair3004  6 років тому +1

      www.pnwbeachcombing.com is my web page about beach combing on the Olympic Peninsula. You may read the field reports about Port Angeles, North Beach and Glass Beach in Port Townsend, WA that will give you information about he history of beach dumping that most of these coastal communities used to do as a matter of practice for garbage disposal back before the 1960s. "Glass Beach" was a remote beach that many residents would drive out to and dump their garbage over the 60-80 foot cliff onto the beach below. You will also see an historical picture on the sea glass page. link www.pnwbeachcombing.com/sea-glass.html that shows dumping over the cliff in Port Angeles back in those days. So, the sea glass found on most beaches around the world is placed there in years past by poor environmental practices and by the policies of coastal cities in decades past. Thanks for the question.

    • @quickbeam88
      @quickbeam88 6 років тому

      Ok! thanks. and the cliff dumping makes total sense for the how and why. Much better than the modern floating plastic. Maybe old bad becomes new good. love the videos.

    that area has different colored pebbles of greens, black, pinks. If tumbled I'm sure are better finds then just glass...

    • @timblair3004
      @timblair3004  5 років тому +1

      Many sea glass collectors appreciate the value of a naturally tumbled piece of glass. It's not "just glass" but a uniquely created item. This also makes the production of jewelry with genuine sea glass a valuable item. The collectors are not looking for naturally tumbled colored rock but sea glass that has been on the beach and processed for decades. Many beautiful pieces of rock can be purchased on-line but they were not naturally produced by "wave action" on a beach. This unique process on discarded glass creates the value.

    Once I went to a glass beach and found a knife.It was metal, but idk why there would be a knife at a glass beach.

    • @timblair3004
      @timblair3004  5 років тому +1

      Most glass beaches were old town dumps. Almost all of the metal has rusted away leaving only the broken pieces of tumbled pottery and glass pieces that have been rounded and smoothed over many years. An old knife would not be uncommon but it would definitely rust away over the years. If the one you found wasn't that rusted then I would assume it had recently been dropped on the beach by a hiker.

    What is the value of a medium sized piece of glass. I have a large container full from when I'v gone to the beach near my house and maybe I can cash in on what other people thought I was odd for stopping and collecting. Cheers and happy hunting :)

      you might find some buyers on craigslist or even etsy. Do a search and type in "etsy sea glass" where you will find various lots of sea glass for sale. Some people simply mass produce the faked sea glass by tumbling it in a cement mixer or something else. If your collection is genuine sea glass found on a beach then you should get a little more for it. Also, depending on the quality of your sea glass, you should get more if it is frosted and has rounded edges. See my web page on "sea glass" on pnw.beachcombing.com Have fun hunting!

      The beach is open to all people. You just need to check the tide schedule to make sure you don't go out when the tides are too high. You might get stuck on the beach or up on the cliff rocks trying to avoid the waves.

      Yes, they can be if prepared in a jewelry presentation. A piece of sea glass that is wire wrapped and hung on a sterling silver chain can bring $30.00 to $50.00 on line on a market site like... etsy.com. You can also make earrings out of the nicely tumbled, rounded and frosted sea glass pieces.

      ugly sewer rat: I’ve lived 5 miles from glass beach for the last 11 years and have only seen lighting a few times. If it was glass from lightning strikes, which is a possibility, then there should be an equal distribution in the entire area. There is not.
      Talked to a lady that said years earlier people went out there with 5 gallon buckets and came back with them half to totally filled. Now I see some come back with with half a gallon ziplock bag full, some good size pieces. Closer to North Beach it is picked over. I’m not a glass collector but still will pick up the big pieces to give away. The browns sure looks like beer bottle brown or old pre-plastic brown glass. Also, the locals say it was a place garbage was dumped years ago.

      @@fleur0925 yes, that does happen in the South I believe but the majority is made from broken bottles. China, antique jars that have all been broken and they tumble for years around the rocks.
