  • What was once garbage - bits of glass, such as soda bottles, that have washed up on beaches - has been transformed by nature into sea glass, a precious item that is often transformed once again by humans into jewelry and decorative art. Correspondent Conor Knighton reports.

To bad there can't be such a demand for all the plastic that's in the ocean now.

I used to love collecting sea glass with my Mom. Sadly, there is so little sea glass now. It’s been replaced with horrid plastic littering the beaches and polluting our oceans 😔

Give it 50 years and it will be a fad for ocean plastic to be an artisan material. Environmentalist groups are collecting it and recycling them into trinkets now. It’s a logical step.

I loved visiting Glass Beach in Fort Bragg at different times over the years. I even had the pleasure of having a beer with Captain Cass on Glass Beach. He spread a blanket on the hood of his car and sold a few sea glass treasures. He is an expert at when, where and how to find 'treasure'! His impact was minimal on the beach. Yes, I did some beachcombing there, and have collected some glass, years ago. More recently I was shocked and saddened to see some who were hauling away as much of the glass as they could carry! Two women who told me they were visiting from the East coast had large USPS shipping boxes in their car, which they were filling with sea glass and "mailing it home". I questioned their actions, but they had no guilt over removing the enjoyment for people who came there from all over the world to see this treasure. I've read that collecting is now prohibited. I'm very fortunate I saw these beaches when they weren't so popular, and being looted.

I grew up in Fort Bragg, there was tons of glass, it’s sad that it’s going away quickly. I went to Glass Beach all the time, I lived walking distance from the beach, great memories ❤️👌🏻

There are no limits in artistic creativity when working with sea glass.

Beach town's on the Oregon coast are shops that collect plastic trash from the ocean and beaches and transform them into sculptures!!!!

Reminds me of my school trips to the Chesapeake Bay and Solomons Island, i fell in love with the fossils, glass and solitary Lighthouses. The glass is a powerful memory of the sea and bay for me ❤

One thing I love about a local beach, is when the glass washes above the rocks & sand…gives a beautiful wave crashing wind-chime like sound. Worded terribly but hopefully you all understand. If you can, take it in & enjoy.

I was walking along a deserted beach on an island in the Pacific & kept hearing what sounded like a dog chain rattling behind me. Kept turning around thinking some stray dog was following me. Took a while to figure out tide was coming in & it was the sea glass I was hearing. Nothing better than walking on a beach in the Pacific & finding an old Japanese glass float from a fishing net. Like finding a big emerald or diamond sitting on the sand.

Trash can often become one man’s treasure. Especially at how Mr. Krabs found a hat that once belonged to Mr. Smitty WerbenJagerManJensen.
“It was his hat, Mr. Krabs! He was number one!”

Too bad we can’t do with with plastic. We should go back to using more glass. It seems less detrimental to the environment.

Kelli Thompson at Saltwater Jewellry Designs creates the most beautiful pieces we have seen in thirty years of vacationing in Bermuda. Her love of nature, her unique artistry, and her generous spirit enhance all of Kelli’s creations. It’s a joy to take home these little treasures as mementos of a visit to this island paradise.

Take some glass put it in a a Tumblr put some sand in there and saltwater and let it tumble around for a couple days and you'll have sea glass I learned that back in 1963
