In your diagram at 4:14 you show the blade being thicker than the bushing but it should be the other way around, otherwise the bushing wouldn't do anything as the washers would be pushed directly against the blade. The bushing needs to be a bit thicker than the blade so that when you tighten the pivot screw, the washers will be clamped against the bushing and leave a gap between the washers and blade
I agree, this diagram was found online and hastily made to make a point. ideally, the bushings would be just bigger than flush with the blade to have that gap and allow for fluid motion and lubrication
@@hazelknives yeah thankfully my bali's aren't stripped to hell, have extra hardware to replace them with. Aside from my Ti-Green Inked kraken which I applied too much locktite it seems, that thing wouldn't come out; thought it was due to a stripped screw but even using one of those stripped screw extractors it just made it worse. id recommend setting them aside when you take the knife apart so you dont miss which one is which. the direction isnt the most important part, since the washers are a soft enough material that theyll shear to be flush, but its good practice
It doesn't really matter if you put the bushing in the "wrong way" or at least in my experience it hasn't mattered but then again I'll take either side to the sand paper so maybe that's why it doesn't matter to much.
yeah, plus if a bushing is unevenly sanded the washer for that side will be unevenly worn so they even out, so flipping it would just cause the other washer to wear more than the other side. while it probably isnt a dealbreaker i just try to keep everything as controlled as i can when working
if you want the best tolerances you can get, you do need to disassemble the knife. if it's in good enough shape and the bushings are oversized, you can just tighten it and put some kpl on. tuning is more for people that want the absolute most out of their knives, but ive got a few i dont even bother with and just throw on some nrb thicc lube
What makes bushings better than just washers alone? I’m having difficulty understanding how it leads to tighter tolerances. 4:16 was helpful, but I don’t see how it is any better than washers alone.
so essentially, it’s just adding another layer of contact to prevent it from getting stuck. think of grabbing something smooth with gloves on instead of just your bare hands, it’ll slide easier because it’s got that extra layer of contact. lugermonger also did a video explaining how bushing pivots work if you want to learn more!
With washers you can’t tighten your screws all the way and call it a day because the handle will bind and you have to loosen the screws until they swing but with bushings if they are the right size than you can crank your screws call it a day and it should have dead perfect tolerances (if the bushing is sized correctly
for one, bushing tuning can get very finnicky. knives like the brs replicant are a good example, where their tolerances are constantly changing regardless of the tune. its also an issue of how close youre willing to get before you risk undersizing the bushings, and some knives just kinda suck and dont take a tune well
they’re probably torqued down and loctited making them hard to remove. squeeze the handles together and try your best to remove the screws, if they still won’t come out you might need to look into ways to get loctite off
ideally not, some knives wind up needing more tlc than others, but most well produced knives wont need multiple tune sessions after reaching a good point. every knife experiences wear and tear though
