John, recently I replaced my Vidar with the Aegir driving Tekton Double Impact speakers. Your description of the two is absolutely spot on. The only other difference I would add is the Aegir seems to convey a little more dimensionality, if that’s even a word. Separation of vocalists and instruments is more 3D. My preamp is a Schiit Freya in tube mode with Russian tubes. I can’t say the Freya is “tubey” sounding at all. I just like extra drive it gives the Aegir in the tube amplified mode. You are, hands down, one of the best HiFi reviewers in the UA-cam space. Cheers!

DAC->Class A 25WPC -> 87db sensitive speakers is about my sweet spot. I might give the 600M another run on my Firstwatt, but only after they are fixed with Dannys' kit. They are a bit under potential as stock.

It’s funny last night I was drunk and bored in quarantine, I took some extra speakers I had hooked them up to a spare class d amp and was using a schiit sys as a preamp play music through my dragonfly red. This set up sounded very good but it never even occurred to me I could just hook the power amp up to the dragonfly and use it as the preamp.

A "by the way": The Schiit Modi 3 volume control issue seems exclusive to MacOS and maybe iOS. PC Windows 10 and my Android adjust the volume normally from the computer or phone.

    • @hermannisavolainen8328
      @hermannisavolainen8328 4 роки тому +2

Jim Shaw That is because Windows and Android keeps the os volume control even when an external dac is connected. The os volume control only limits the volume and should be set to max for best quality. So you do need a preamp with volume control with the modi even with Windows because the hardware is not built into the unit like with dragonflys

I was just about to post that exact thing. When feeding the Modi via USB from my Win10 pc the only time that I’ve not been able to control the volume is with Tidal, and only if the option “Use exclusive Mode” & “Force Volume” control is enabled in sound settings of Tidal. I also have no issue varying the volume if AirPlaying from my iphone to the Modi. This may however be a function of the airport express that is feeding the Modi via optical.

    • @gordonrankin3995
      @gordonrankin3995 4 роки тому +1

@@hermannisavolainen8328 Windows requires Exclusive Mode, Android is the only OS that is not compliant with the USB specification for volume control unless you use add on drivers like Extreme Audio. So the Windows problem can be changed by enabling Exclusive mode in the Control Panel Sound.

thanks fun review, I purchased these speakers for Christmas, I hooked them up to a brand new in the box (old ) arcam solo neo ( 50 wpc into 8 oms ) that I had for years and never used. I am a newbie to in home audiophile ownership. The Arcam has a built in dac, the sound after a long burnin time is amazing, I don't think this is the ideal system for these speakers, but really amazing with well engineered / produced cd's at loud volumes.

Klipsch and Schiit work very well together. I am using the Schiit Freya preamp running balanced into a pair of Schiit Vidars through Klipschhorns. It is absolutely stunning, dynamic, smooth. Previously I was using a pair of Mcintosh MC-30s for power. it sounded really good, but maybe I needed a change. The Vidars are less warm and enveloping, but they have the punch and drive on the low end that John describes.

It’s always hard to quantify the sound of a system and John does a good job of relating his impressions in a useful way. But I’ve never heard high end frequency response described as being humid before but it’s appropriate if one considers the opposite as being dry. Personally I find tone to be important even in electronic music, there can be a richness and complexity of tone much the same as the tone from a guitar through an overdrive or distortion pedal that a good system should be able to express.

    Hi John.
Vidar (pronounced “VIH-dar”; from Old Norse Víðarr, which might mean “The Wide-Ruling One”) is one of the younger generation of gods who survive Ragnarok, the cataclysmic end of the cosmos in Norse mythology. ... Vidar, a son of Odin by the giantess Gríðr, immediately set upon the wolf to avenge his father's death.

I purchased a audio technica LP3 TT..love it, and a pair of edifier 1280DBs speakers and they are good but not sure if I am getting a rich full sound out of them. I was thinking of bumping up to either the audioengine 5+ or klipsch R-51pm speakers. I was hoping I could get your opinion on which speakers you would prefer? Or should I just add a subwoofer to the edifiers? Thanks again.

At this point you should probably go ahead and look at the Saga+, admittedly the tube buffer is a hybrid which I believe makes it different from the Freya but it’s also half the price and size.
Frankly the only thing really missing from the Saga/Freya right now is the ability to take the expansion modules that some of the more recent Schiit headphone amps use. It would be great to be able to add a built-in DAC or phono stage and not need an external box/power supply.

But the female end of the DragonFly. So I can't have a reliable connection anymore, unless I fixate the cable in a certain angle. The DragonFly Red is an amazing product. But that issue with the output has now spoiled most of the fun for me. Sadly.

Thanks John. The Dragonfly as DAC/Preamp also gives you remote control with Roon( device volume) that modi/sys don't. Let say if you use a USB out device as Roon endpoint. I have my own Intel based streamer that beats many under $2000 and connected to Schiit Yaggi. Did a test with dragon fly and the remote worked so well.

GR Research has a crossover upgrade available for the 600Ms. Just search on youtube for details. Supposedly fixes the V curve dip.

I listened to the original 600s and the upgraded pair that was digitally recorded and is posted on youtube. Everytime I picked the originals. Seemed to me that there was much more air and clarity before the upgrade imo. I own a pair of 600s btw that I really enjoy.

Glad to see you're using the dragonfly red in this system. I'm putting together a new system and was going to update my red to cobalt. Think I'll give the red another try first. As always, great video showing importance of system matching.

Have you had the Vidar for some time? Do you notice any hum or noise from it? I have RP600Ms and I have been constantly debating between Aegir and Vidar.
I ordered the Aegir and reached out to Schiit...they said they recommend Vidar for my speakers and want me to let them know if I wanna switch it out before it ships. So conflicted! I have read various reviews online of people gushing over the Aegir with RP600ms....

Great video! How funny, these are my speakers and I ordered an Aegir a few days ago after debating between that and the Vidar.
Do you think it would be fine to use this with an a Denon x3500h as the preamp? It's being used in a 3.1 HT system I also use for 2.0 music.
Also, do you EQ your RP600M to remove the big dip at 1.5khz or to control the bass at the low end?
Cheers and thanks again for your amazing content!!

Jordan, How is the Bass with Aegir? New Record day says you need two Aegier with this speaker. I already have 2 Vidars driving Kef LS50.

A little late here, but yes! The Denon isn't as good as a dedicated pre, but the Aegir is a huge upgrade over the Denon's amps and will sound great. You can always add in a preamp with HT bypass later and plug your 2.0 sources into that for a truly hybrid HT/hifi setup if you want.

Ssince you have them at hand and that Klipsch has a bi amp connection possibility, you can taste Aegir handle the highs, and the Vidar handling the mid low driver, and use the Freya +, afraid of being wrong but i think it would be great, My opinion is the difference on that Schiit audio quality, It is not very far from a hi end system, in fact that difference is very small.

The Magnepan LRS is vastly better sounding than the Klipsch RP-600M. My issue with Klipsch is that what you gain in dynamics is lost in imaging (imaging is NOT a center defined image...most people have never heard true imaging where the speaker completely disappears and a soundstage forms beyond the speakers). The high efficiency means you get to hear all the noise from the upstream electronics. They just do little for me.
But just like Bose, they sell like hotcakes. Go figure.

    • @mchazelover

It depends on the amplifier used with these Klipsch speakers. I tried a Cambridge CXA80 with them and the soundstage was massive, the speakers disappeared type soundstage. With a Naim 5si the soundstage was smaller and not very impressive

How about the Sphinx v.3 tube/solid state hybrid integrated amp (100 Wpc @ 8 ohms) driving the latest incarnation of the smallest of the ancient and venerable Klipsch speakers still from Hope, Arkansas? Turn up the volume and you could have a Rogue shouting Heresy.

Great video! I also have a Klipschiit setup but use a Schiit Ragnarock 2 paired with my RP 600M’s. I upgraded my RP 600M’s crossover using Danny’s upgrade kit and it was a big improvement. I also have an Audioquest Dragonfly blue but haven’t used it as part of my main system. Thanks for your suggestion, I’ll give it a try.

Are there any speakers made by the Dip company? Was wondering what a Dipschitt would look like?

  • @jazzandcocktails7

This one was loads of fun but confused me. If I understand correctly, the suggestion is that the sound out of a MBP through a Dragonfly Red beats the Bluesound Node 2i, which tends to call into question the need for a streamer. After watching your videos and those of Hans Beekhuyzen, I was ready to pull the trigger on a streamer, probably the Auralic G1, also considering the Lumin D2, but am now wondering whether to simply use a laptop computer into my DAC.

I purchased the Klipsch RP-500M (75 watts instead of the RP-600M 100 watts). I coupled them with the Schiit Vidar. The sound is lovely but everytime I turn off the Vidar, the Klipsch speakers make a worrying "popping" / thud sound. I use an Asgard 3 as a preamp. Any idea what could be the issue? My understanding is that these popping sounds can damage the speakers or reduce their life span.
