I purchased these almost solely from this review. That may sound crazy to some, but I trust you. Based on so many reviews of a myriad of products, I have developed a sense of where we may agree and where we may disagree. This review spoke to me, my needs, my projected hopes, my future. My rooms are rarely perfect, and I like to move every few years. I love researching and would love to waste countless hours imagining my next component purchase, a/b-ing all my recordings, fiddling endlessly. But what I want and what I need are often at odds. And this is what I need. After an embarrassing interval of mistakenly assigning both speakers as left channels and wondering why certain frequencies were missing etc etc. I absolutely love them. They sound majestic. The sub-bass sometimes startles me in the nicest way and the upper mids and treble get me on the edge of my seat nearly every time I’m listening. Pianos simply come alive through the A500 in the most magical way.
I feel the exact same way. It’s because of John that I bought the Dragonfly Cobalt. I trust him AND I have also managed to expand my music library because of him because his taste in music is incredibly eclectic just like mine!
I’m in a similar boat in that a speaker like this fits my needs perfectly (except the Platin hub doesn’t do Airplay 2). I’m not sure that the sound quality from these will meet my needs, so I look forward to seeing what the next generation brings to the table.
Your mind works like mine, to be honest I think anyone who reads your post would relate. I'm tempted to buy these and sell my separates... Thanks for the great post, it was a pleasure to read. Jamie :) @jason
Same here! When it comes to audio, I trust John’s judgement. The A500’s are here in my living room, I am listening to them as I write this. They are glorious. God I missed that bass in my previous set.
Yeah I'm also pretty convinced that I'll buy these once I have the finances for them. My NAD pre- and power amp will be sold, just like my current speakers. I was thinking about a set of Wharfedale Elysian 2's, but I doubt my current amps will do them justice. They basically cost the same, these Buchardts and those Wharfedales, but I'd need a new amp and also my €100 dac would need replacement. I am thinking of a Heaven11 Billie + Denafrips Pontus + Wharfedale Elysian 2 + dual SVS SB-1000 pro combo but my wife would most certainly kill me for that! I think these Buchardts with their hub would be a much wiser choice.
Hi John, I have the A500 for a couple of weeks now and I am blown away . It´s a gamechanger and your review nails it! Great job! Concidering that you don´t need an external DAC, a networkbridge , amps and cables I would say they are worth every single cent and more. Mads Buchardt does a fantastic job taking care of his costumers, never had such a support before. Just one thing that i thought You should have mentioned....they get better every day as they need some time for breaking in.
I work in live audio and seeing this level of Future Tech in an enclosure doesn’t surprise me in the least. It’s been.way too long that the audiophile world has forcibly kept itself back while tech has developed elsewhere, to dramatic and positive effect. Thanks for shining a light on companies willing to take risks, go against audiophile dogma and lean into these new developments, and come out with impressive products. Keep up the good work.
John, I struggle to express how incredibly enjoyable I find your videos and the manner in which you present them. Considering how much great content is out there its some achievement to stand head and shoulders above most of it. Bravo my friend! Downside - man this new addiction is gonna cost me:-)
As a DIY speaker designer/builder I am amazed by how much stuff can be crammed into such a (relatively) small cabinet and still achieve such wide-ranging, accurate sound. 3 drivers each in their own sub-enclosure, 3 DACs, 3 Class D amps in a cabinet that measures 365 x 180 x 280 mm (14.4” x 7” x 11”). That’s only 18.17 liters (.64 cu ft) for the overall cabinet dimensions! Subtracting the thickness of the walls including the sub-enclosures, the drivers, and the active components doesn’t seem to leave much so I imagine the remaining interior space is crammed full of stuffing.
Active Speakers and DSP is for audio what ABS and traction control were for cars and still are for motorcycles: it's the new kid on the block and as such gets ridiculed and downplayed by the old-fashioned folks because they have not experienced it or don't understand it. Hats off to a) Buchardt audio for having created such a marvel of electronic engineering and b) John Darko for this great video and his attitude towards such advancements.
while I agree that active amp and DSP is good, I feel that DSP technology is still at it's infancy. That means that in the next couple of years, there will be new DSP chips that will be a vast improvement over the current generation. With the Buchardt all in one solution, you will not be able to take advantage of the new generation chips. Software DSP upgrades can only get you so far. Advances in chip technology will vastly improve the processing power and gives better results. Look at nvidia graphics cards or game consoles. Every new generation increases the power of the previous generation. it is the same with DSP chips.
@@veritas932 yup I agree, it's certainly not the last word in engineering, just think about the fact, that cloud computing and AI has not (yet) found its way into high-end DSP. But All-in-One-solutions are hassle-free, you don't have to match, buy and setup multiple components. In your analogy this would be comparable to laptops or AIO-computers like the iMac. They certainly have their place. And for the sake of completeness, there _are_ ways to do it, just look at Schiit's upgrade cards or NADs extension modules. At their core graphics chips are not that different from DSP chips - they can perform extremely fast floating point matrix multiplications.
wow, I expected something incredible from Buchardt, but this was 100% glowing. sounds like a game changer product. awesome video, as usual, and upping the production. congrats on 10.
I'm a big fan of Buchardt. I waited 6 months for my S400 signatures. It was worth it. I loved everything you said. But for me I think waiting for the upcoming Buchardt amp will be better for me. All the same technology. Im hoping you get to review it soon. Also congratulations on 10 years.
The Buchardt I150 integrated is now able to be preordered and a discount. Plus a very nice further discount for those who already own Buchardt speakers. I was considering that for my S400 SE, but now that I have tried the A500 I am not going to go that route. I don't think that the S400 SE, due to the fact that it employs a passive radiator, will ever be able to deliver the timbres that the A500 can.
While I’ve always loved your super smooth detailed presentation, It’s was great to see that true enthusiasm and excitement about this product. Never fail to give Great content but I especially enjoyed this one . Love from the uk 🇬🇧
Woah, I didn't know Jana was associated with this channel, nice to see her again. The A500 is a great piece of kit, love to see a company like Buchardt put out something phenomenal
it’s worth mentioning that these speakers can be set up as home theater speakers (in the future) where others active speakers can’t (such as kef), at least out of the box. Very nice video and review. Thanks @darko!
Congrats on 10 years of doing your own thing with your own terms! As a beginner ”audio person” I have been watching your videos for about one year and they just seem to be getting better, and the longer the video the more informative and entertaining they are.
Boy, have I been waiting for THIS! Such an exciting product... Thanks John! *Edit:* I say that because the Buchardt s400 looked fantastic but I'm too enamored with future-fi convenience/ optimisation to return to the world of separates. The "low level correction" feature is ingenious in my opinion, and a brilliant example Future-Fi being more than just convenience/ "lifestyle" products. Happy to see these haven't disappointed. Also, I don't own a lump of tin, but I do own a pair of Kef LS50 wireless and funnily enough they broke last year. I took them back to Kef who happily repaired them, promptly, out of waranty, for next to nothing. They were an absolute pleasure to speak to as well.
Future-fi does have the typical downside of putting all your eggs in one basket - if your speakers malfunction, your entire system goes down. The A500s are much more complex electronically than passive speakers, so more can go wrong. Then you have to pack everything up and send back to Denmark. Don't mean to be Debbie downer, but keeping it real.
"Geeking" is sort of unbridled, bubbling, smiling enthusiasm. I work in tech, write code, and fool with enough electronics to be a little jaded - but I have to agree this system is just FANTASTIC. Just the right combination of very smart features and engineering to be truly innovative, with no shouty "hey look at me I'm high tech." I am also geeking over here, with a huge smile. I wish it were in my budget, but it's fun just knowing this exists. Thank you!
Thanks John. I came across your channel googling these speakers and it’s so refreshing to come across hifi reviews that are insightful and entertaining - and without a whiff of socks-and-sandals audiophile nerdishness. And thank you for the ‘no racism, no misogyny’ demand in the comments; if I have to read one more reviewer refer to ‘the wife’. You’ve also sold me on buying these!
The System Audio Legend 5 Silverback seems to have the same plate amp/dsp module and stereo hub+remote. I wonder how they compare. They are both similar priced, active, dsp enabeled, danish speakers 🤔
DSP provides so many advantages V's the 'typical' passive setup. The ability to adjust a speaker to a room, or to taste and adjust for time domain/phase shift anomalies is so valuable.
Yeah, I did my research on the DSP technology, but never demoed any product featuring it. I don't know if I want to spend 4K on something for a demo first however! Unless I get some other speaker less than 1K to demo then base my decision off of that, of course providing the technology in that particular speaker is very good, because if it's poor than there's no way to determine if I am going to like the A500's. I mentioned earlier that I am still on the fence about getting all in one active speakers like this or more traditional approach. I mentioned the Forte III and how to scale they are and how a driver as small as the A500 will Never simulate, never. But still I have to decide and just see what happens.
As a Dane in the audio industry, I'm happy to see that you're checking these out. The active system and hub seem identical to the ones used in SA legend silverback products. Perhaps check them out too
How in the world did you get that much information in a single review? I had to make a second flat-white to take it all in. A masterclass in audio review. I believe I’m a Luxman/Klipsch gent, preferring a little cellulite under the covers than an airbrush. However, this could be a better fit for my future Japanese tiny house. Bravo. Standing ovation.
I went fo for the Buchardt. I did this almost wholly from this review. I'll receive them in Japan in May. I will follow up when I've lived with them for a bit. Cannot thank you enough.
Wow!! "One of THE best products ...ever reviewed." Exciting!! I found the magic of the Zu Soul cos I was sooo stoked by the prose of yer review and feeling equally fired up about the A500s. Sounds like Future-Fi just became Buchardt-Fi. So... upcoming DAR-KO award, yeah? Btw, fade the music whingers, mate. I personally like yer leftfield listening tastes even if just for the fact it's refreshingly different from other reviewers. Cheers to 10 years and here's to 10 more 🍻
Finally a review on the A500s. I've been emailing Mads way before any reviews were out and I have been putting off getting the Forte III's based on reviews of these speakers. I keep getting hung up on making a decision on front end gear, and speakers because of the whole optimal pairing or system matching synergy thing. It would be different if I had loads of money and get this for that and that for this, and have all sorts of system pairing but I don't. I like the idea of simplicity but having quality audio, and engaging audio. Now is the question: do these A500s sound as big as the Forte's? I can't imagine, I mean calculating the whole physics thing of size of speaker driver differences between the two, but maybe with a sub? But may be they do as is? All I know is out of the dozens of speakers I demoed those Forte's are just infectious and made the music real and palatable, moreover they just made me enjoy the music. Now if these can get me there and then some well then this is the path I should take. I have to watch your continuing review part 3 on these. But thank you John. Stay healthy.
I'm all for active speaker systems but why such the disparity in warranty from their passive counterparts? Kef LS50 is 5 year warranty, LS50 wireless is 2 year warranty. Similar deal with the burchardt but 10 year on the passive and 2 on active (for the electronics). Obviously there are a lot more components but it just makes it seem like the company doesn't believe in the longevity of their active products so much.
They will sell you an extended warranty. Mads also provided five year warranties covering the electronics for all of us that pre-ordered the A500s and had to wait longer than originally scheduled.
I am more concerned about getting parts. In a passive system the amplifier is more likely to fail than the speakers. If you can't get it repaired you buy another amplifier. With digital active speakers the DAC is more likely to fail than the amp and the amp more likely than the speakers. One component not fixable and it is not only one speaker to replace, at least a pair, maybe forcing reconsideration on the rear speakers and centre.
Rhys H Passive speakers have a virtually unlimited lifetime. There's not much that can break. Active components are much more susceptible to electronic failures. That's the nature of the technology, independent of the manufacturer.
I love your videos. I'm pretty old school even tho I'm youngish. Vinyl, CDs. No streaming or active speakers for me. Just physical media. Still I never miss any of your stuff. Great thoutfull content with great production. Here's to another 10 years.
I own the Dynaudio Xeo 3 and 4 speakers as well as the Kef LS50 W and the LSX. I've both the Kef speakers totally fail and have to be replaced. I've never had a second of trouble with the Dyanudios. The Dynaudio uses a similar looking hub. It would be a godsend if they came out with a hub you could sync to the xeos that did what the buchardt does. Seems like Buchardt looked at all the competition and what was lacking and put it all in one speaker. Amazing. I'd love to see John review the B&W Duo as well as the Dynaudio Xeo or XD models. Personally I like the sound of the Xeo better than the Kef LS50W its a warmer and fuller sound, better bass.
Hi John, Was wondering if you could run a video on what brings the magic with Hi-fi gear? You mention with the Kii that it delivers what we think we want, “but how many of us will actually part with our hard earned cash”. You also bought the Klipsch stating “they were coloured but were fun”. There was also the schiit freya, and now this vid on the Buchardt where the most enjoyable profile is one the engineers didn’t want to release. I’ll get to my recent journey shortly, but perhaps you could do a video on the type of imperfections we should be looking for depending on our tastes, possibly covering: Frequency response Roll off Smoothness, warmth Leading edges Punch, power, impact Soundstage Room reflections My journey - Moved house a year and a half ago and was instantly disappointed by how bad my lounge sounded with my existing system. Very reflective, sideways, asymmetric room with alcoves. Speakers needing to be obstructively out into the room to make sense of it all. I can finally afford an “endgame”ish setup, but thought this would likely be a massive waste of money given the room (have tried experimenting with a huge amount of rockwool, but found it no more effective than placing cushions at 1st reflection points which could then be put back again). So I ordered the Dutch and Dutch… Seems to cover all the bases right? However…I did not like them! In fact, I would go as far as to say that they absolutely killed the magic that I have in my existing modest setup, despite being much much clearer and technically “better” in so many ways. Like yours, they also had a fault, which made it a lot easier to send back after trialling them. Part of the problem for me was “removing the room” which is what I wanted as it did get rid of reflections, however I have positioned my existing speakers in such that all the reflections almost paint the venue/recording space on my walls around me. With that removed I had a very clear picture of the singer on the front wall, but they were no longer in the room with me, engaging me in the performance. Also the hard leading edged which at first were impressive, stopped me relaxing into the music and thus the magic was gone. I have learned a lot from this journey, but I expect you could add a lot more. Particularly with your contacts at Buchardt where they are working on such things. Please can you consider an article covering different system attributes/foibles which we may actually want to be looking for so we can make better choices? Cheer, Rich System PMC FB1 6mm OFO copper cables TagMclarren 60i Integrated Chord interconnects Squeezebox Touch Raspberry Pi4 7” touchscreen running LMS (Thanks for that!)
There's something important (to me) that wasn't mentioned. The hub has no analog pre-out, so you can't connect a subwoofer to this system unless it's also WISA compatible. The Buchardt website says you have to buy one of two Primare preamps if you want to use your own sub, and those preamps are $1,800 and $4,500 and it's unclear but seems you then lose the
@@wojciechczupta I returned my A500's because they just didn't have enough quantity to fill my large room. I have no doubts the A700 would fill that void without issue. They are the most enjoyable speaker I've ever listened to.
John - what a great review! The territory between domestic audio and studio setups is really interesting to me and really enjoyed your exploration of the Hedd Type 20 for a domestic setting - if it something that interests you, it would be great to see your insights on the Dynaudio Core 47 or 59 - here's to the next 10 yrs :)
Fabulous, very comprehensive review! A bit long at 30 minutes but then again, you have left no stone unturned. We even get to hear it which is ultimately what it's all about! Way to go! 👍🏽😊🙏🏽
Have had a pair since they were released as an upgrade to the Kef Ls 50 wireless. No sub required. Tilt is Not for phase alignment. Phase alignment is handled by the DSP. As a package they are totally worth the price, even in Canadian $.
Great video, didn't know about your channel, wasn't actively looking for speakers and didn't know the existence of Buchardt. However, as audio enthusiast I subscribed to your channel and will use it to enrich my interest in audio. Thanks, keep it up!
maybe they are trying to promote her for future episodes....somewhat like Linus Tech Tips where Linus doesn't host all the episodes. takes the load of John.
Very Interesting, but i think you’ve missed the elefant in the room... What if you add a sub to the KEF LS50W? I personally have the LS50W and love them, basically for three reasons: Value for money incl a very good analog in, Great sound and flat friendly (having deep base is nice but likely your Neighbours will hate you) - but you can add the sub if. Now, I’m not necessarily a KEF fan or so.. but what about the Reference 1 stand-mount speakers? I heard them with a Hegel amp and they did blow me really really away. One of the best clean, perfect sound ever... For example the Kii, I’ve listen to them and yes technically great but really more like meh...
Have been supremely happy with my LS50W using an SB2000 in its sub out as well. Also, the DSP in the KEFs was very useful in dialing in the sub. Very clean and full image.
I’ve never upgraded my system for over 25 years because it still sounds great. But now, my floorstanders are taking up too much space and aesthetically, looking a bit dated as we (my wife) upgrade our house. Active speakers may help me in that respect and Buchardt seem to be making waves in the speaker department and 25Hz low end looks impressive. Thanks for the review.
They can sound rather dull out of the box but the different master recordings allow you to change the profile of the speakers. Losing my stereo pair amps has tidied the room up. Now to but a discrete preamp.
This review saved me many many hours of searching and the trouble finding my first real HIFI! I've decided to get it this year! I don't want to juggle with dac, amp, preamp etc bs, I can just listen to great music with superb quality, having room correction and mastertunings! Oh, btw, Buchardt will release their own SUB this year, which can be added to the system with the HUB!
I have had the pleasure to speak with Mads Burchardt and he has restored my faith in humanity and deserves the success that may come his way. A breath of fresh air in this world today. I have ordered a pair and look forward to listening to them, I hope I like them but what’s to loose with a trial period. Some custom stands are on the way, not all will like them but I think they are fabulous. Mr Darko thanks for the reviews I really like presentation and ‘attitude’ long may it continue.
I have these for a month now and I am in love. I did not even play with the master tuning yet, it just sounded amazing off the box. Thanks for the review.
Congrats John on your 10th anniversary. Great review as always-I’m not in the market for new speakers but I pressed play because I knew it would be interesting & thought provoking-and so it proved. It goes without saying that my entire life would be validated if you featured Level 42, but that ain’t gonna happen ;-)
Very classy channel. I’m considering this speaker for professional nearfield use. Before viewing this episode, I had nudged the A500 towards the “NO” column. There’s not a lot of examples of engineers using them successfully. You’ve strongly revived my interest in this speaker. I’ll most likely take advantage of the 45 day return policy to try them in my own environment. The next thing on my list that I would consider is an $8000 pair of Genelecs. I’d rather spend 4K if they can get the job done. I really enjoyed your review. Thanks.
What would be really interesting, and of value, is a comparison of a NAD M10 / M33 + Buchardt S400 system and the NAD front end feeding the A500. Inter alia a comparison of Dirac vs Buchardt correction technology. Could also substitute a modest streaming front end (Allo Signature / Aries Mini) for the NAD in the A500 set up for similar cost systems.
Congrats on making 10 years! Your commentary and critique are insightful, and fresh! Great reviews over the years John, so happy to come along for the ride 🤙🏼
Hi John! I’ve seen all of your videos and they are terrific- yes, your attitude towards hi fit is so relatable and real. (for me). For the moment, this one takes the cake. Well done, thank you!
You got my attention when you mentioned ''low level enhancement'' Edit: I had a great experience dealing with Mads in the past despite the fact that the S400 didn't work out in my room at the time. I am glad to see that he may have a real winner in the A500 and am seriously considering them myself despite the Class D amplification and somewhat antiquated DAC chip. I suppose this is a prejudice and that implementation and actual listening will determine the end result.
Love this, it's the first step in the future of audio. With the physical disappearance of amplifiers (and DAC's), preconceived opinions also disappear. BTW do not change your game, you are very relatable and open minded, the is most important attribute of a reviewer. Hope to see your reviews for long time.
I find your videos extremely enjoyable! I had my A500 for two weeks now and I agree with your review completely.! I hope that Mads will continue developing improvements to this speaker. The feeling that a new update will instill 🤩
Just looking Around : I think the stock tune is the one for my taste. I like the stock v2 but sometimes it is to much forward in the soundstage. I have not tried the 3 way
This is a very positive review of what, in my opinion, is a very very good product. I have the Buchardt S400 SE speakers that I drive with a Crayon CIA 1T amplifier fronted by a Chord MScaler/Chord Dave DAC system. Out of curiosity, I decided to try the A500 speakers and hub. Due to my high end electronics, I really didn't think that the A500 system could sound better than my S400SE system. But it definitely does... in every way. The A500 system excels in frequency range, soundstage width and depth, transparency, clarity, timbres, etc.. It goes deeper but the bass is better controlled and more timbrally accurate (this is very important to me). The Chord DAVE is known for transients/attacks, which I found made the music more dynamic and come alive. When I got Chord components I really loved them for their ability to do this. The CIA iT is also known for its speed and liveliness. However, it is my opinion that in this respect the A500 system is just as good as the Chord/CIA iT/S400SE. I am in agreement with John's assessment of the difference between the Kii 3 and the A500. I heard the Kii 3 and I was turned off by their ''surgical'' precision. They sounded much too analytical... cerebral... lacking emotion. The A500 sound musical. As I said above, I didn't think that the A500 could beat my S400SE system. Now the A500 system is all I want to listen to. Which on the one hand is great... but on the other it's kind of a bummer.
Very interesting product and a solid review, thanks! Possibly my next home studio monitors. My immediate thought was, could these be a Dutch & Dutch 'light'?
I´m also wondering how the A500 compare to the Dutch&Dutch! I thought about getting these, but the WAF was so much higher with the Buchardts, so I preorded them in january and I´m totally happy with the performance ;-)
Well done John. As one of your ten year followers starting on the web when you lived Down Under I see this review as one you have worked towards laying the groundwork for some time. The many discussions of Future Fi have set the stage for evaluating products like the Kii and now A500. Many of the old school audiophiles like myself will continue to play with our multibox systems. Its fun and sounds good so no harm no foul. However it is closed minded and short sighted to deny that DSP is bringing new capabilities and possibilities. From the Darko Future Fi point of view you are placed to report when companies like Buchardt use DSP focused in on high-end HiFi.
Awesome promo by Jana and congrats on 10 years; made my big foray into audiophile level equipment Jul of '10 and gee the number of components that have come and gone, none expected to be replaced when acquired, but darn "rabbit hole". I look everyday at the web page. To I sincetrly hope another 10 years...and maybe some Bowers & Wilkins, lol. Finally, your music, my music (Smiths, REM, The The), so awesone are your sources what plays through my system as well. Be Well, Be Safe🎶
John, I’m surprised that you didn’t talk about how it sounds with other equipment connected using the XLR connections. Is it because that renders the benefits of DSP and room correction useless?
Interesting thought - I never considered that. As an S400 owner, I would just assume that would be the choice for component owners, like me, and those with the A500 would probably never component connect. Someone will do I am sure!
Hi John, Happy Anniversary! I was wondering if you though there would be a benefit of adding a REL subwoofer to the A500s to capture the lower frequencies the A500s don’t produce and to add more bass slam and percussion? Thanks.
Dillema: Should I get the active A500 with the hub or S400 mk2 with the I150 Integrated Amplifier? I am going for a neutral, detailed sound with as much soundstage/space and ideally great instrument separation as well. I have a fairly small room to put them in. Thanks in advance.
Would love to hear your review of the A500 SE with purifi long stroke low distortion woofers. I listened to then recently and they sounded like a high end full range floorstander. I was utterly impressed and don’t think a subwoofer is needed or wanted at all.
Just wish the electronics had longer warranty coverage. This is the same issue with my Klipsch The Sixes powered speakers. They sound great and I am just hoping the amplifier lasts for years to come. I am considering these or the A700 but always have that second thought before pulling the trigger.
Great video, John! I really got off on this one. Wish I had the $$$$ to buy this Buchart but the technology that this set has makes me excited for the future. Give it a couple years and I'm sure that all this tech will trickle down to a price point that even someone like me can afford. Thanks for this review. This really is a super cool product!
Another amazing video, thank you! Have been wondering about the Buchhardt since their passive speaker days. Finally a review from a future-fi perspective.
Congrats on the 10 year anniversary John! Absolutely love your approach to (high end) audio reviews, its so refreshing to see and look forward to watching all the other reviews in the future.
Nice timing on this review of the Buchardt Audion A500. This week I trawled through all your video reviews watching your comments on modern active speakers. But I am looking for a update to 5+1 surround sound - not for improved sound but to be able to get parts for repairs. And so far don't like any of the options thus forcing me to reconsider passive speakers after using active analogue for 40 years.
Great review John, I’m an avid follower of your channel. I have the B&W Formation Duo’s which are similarly priced and these also go down to 25hertz. I find the Duo’s brilliant for modern music recordings but they don’t give my 80’s music any life or depth at all. Would you think the Bucharest are better for this? I would think that a comparison between both brands would be excellent and welcomed by many of us out here. Thanks again for great insights. I am already thinking of changing over to the Bucharts 👍👍👍
David McNeill Photography great question. I have the KEF LS50W and considered switching to B&W Duo formation. Streaming and Vinyl is my source. So curious to find out if Buchard would be a better choice
Awesome review. Nice to see a review that spends some decent time reviewing things. Does the platin hub have Bluetooth transmit to headphone capability?
Congrats on 10 years- and another great review. You had unfinished business with the Dutch & Dutch 8C speakers. I'd love for that business to be finished and compared with the Buchardt A500, at more than twice the price..
Great Review! The fact that these go down to 25hz and are Wisa compatible is seriously impressive for this type of speaker. I'd love to know how these compare to the B&W Formation Duo's which is similarly priced, is also like to know how it might compare to other DSP enabled with room correction speakers , the new B&O Beosound Balance comes to mind, also worth considering the Beolab 17's which dont have room correction but do have Wisa and cost around the same price.
Love the review. How do you think a fancy equalizer that can tune many different frequencies with passive speakers fair against the Buchardts --or the other two active speakers, for that matter?
Hi John Yes room Correction does go a long way to also cover up deficiencies in the complete Audio system chain, even if you have a separates System with an added room Correction module. Love your videos. Best regards Hermann
What about the lifespan of a set like this? When technical protocols and systems change over time, will this set still be viable? Will I be able to use it for 15 years?
would be really interesting to see how these compare to the Genelec Ones. The price doubles at each step from the LS50W to these, and then the 8351. Is it enough to justify a mid-level bump, or is it caught in no mans land between them? I have LS50W, which i have very much enjoyed. Many people nag on the LS50 passive for lack of bass, which the W has corrected for some. You mention how the A500 has better bass, which makes sense given the 2x 6” drivers. I’ve thought about pairing the LS50W with mid bass speakers like the Rythmik FM8. If you plug that into the LS50W sub out, and crank the crossover up as high as you can (250Hz), you’re essentially giving yourself a 3 way. With 2x FM8, you’re at the same price point as the A500. That should even out the bass, or even give the combo an edge there. It sounds like you may still prefer the A500 due to the low gain boost and flexibility in the DSP.
John always enjoy your great reviews. They are always very informative and well done. I own the S400SE’s and love them. For anyone considering Buchardt Audio products I can tell you Mads Buchardt is a man of high integrity and directly corresponds with his customers to ensure you are satisfied. I am considering purchasing the floor standing model ... John maybe you can get a pair of those for review?
Interesting speaker and user/room flexibility. Been an ATC SCM 10-2 active user for many years, I wonder how they will compare with my 10-2a and the SCM 20 MKll?
Hi John. Did you notice that the phone controlled volume when casting from Tidal and Spotify apps was less fine grained than using the Buchardt remote? Spotify for me was particularly bad - one volume click on my Pixel was the equivalent of 3 volume clicks on the Buchardt remote.
Thanks John, been waiting for your review of these as I have the Buchardt S400 which have been a game changer for me in terms of what a standmount’s capable of, so I’m sure these will impress [25hz!!!!]. I believe Madds and his team are at the cutting edge of future fi, love their work. Been along for the ride with you from when you started here in Oz, keep up the good work, look forward to the next ten.
John, thank you for the review. I just subscribed as a result. I wonder if these speakers can correct for being inside a bookcase? I know my situation is not ideal, but probably typical of many homes.
Much appreciated watching your videos. Been reading your reviews well before you tube. Guess it has been that many years! You have your unique style that sets you apart from the rest. Which is hard to do today with more online reviews. Raise a glass of your favorite beverage and toast to another ten years!
Amazing! I wonder if the new KEF LS50 W II will close the gap much? Probably not in the bass, I see the KEFs will go to 40Hz , but I'm still very keen to watch the comparisons (or listen).
John, with the DSP options, is there a configuration which would approach the qualities (which you don’t prefer) of the Kii Audio Three? Speaking from the perspective of an application for studio use.
Thanks for the amazing review in detail. I had been planning to go down the old route of matching components and hoping they all sort of work together. Probably saved me some money!
I had a feeling you were going to love these. Now I want a pair. Thanks for another excellent review John. Here's to the next 10 and the next 100k subscribers.

With DSP, you can do a lot of trickery and get away with a small box. How do you think those small bluetooth speakers are able to produce bass notes?
Agree absolutely
Alexandros Vakalidis - can you share why this is so?
So I am not the only one to say my speakers talk to me ....
@@geraldmcmullon2465 Amazon Alexa speakers will talk to you anytime. Now, all Buchardt has to do is to put Alexa in their active speakers.
Damn this is certainly high praise of these speakers. Buchardt is an excellent innovative company, can't wait to try a pair of these.
Your musical taste is precisely why I watch-- The The, Morrissey, electronica, etc and your reviews are no nonsense, top notch
I have a lot of time for this post
"Spray detail like a fine mist" what an absurdly audiophile thing to say, but I love it! Excellent review and congratulations on ten years!
Hey that was an Audio Poetry, and i believe it has been the best thing i have heard from John when trying to explain a sound characteristic Awesome !!
Speaking audiophile and speaking fine wine can both borderline poetry sometimes 😄
Yes they share at least the back panel and system audio are by far less expensive. John, could you please comment?
@@FoxMulder35 Yes, please :-)
High production quality you have, not only do I feel informed of said product, but I too feel entertained.
Have you tried the System Audio legend 5 silverback with hub?? It's also an wireless speaker from Denmark. That have similar ampifier as the A500
Exactly my concerns as well
Excellent point! I missed that.
Rhys H Passive speakers have a virtually unlimited lifetime. There's not much that can break. Active components are much more susceptible to electronic failures. That's the nature of the technology, independent of the manufacturer.
I’m listening to this via my A500s with great interest .
Can you describe how you are feeding the UA-cam sound all the way through into the A500's? Please.
@@peterdodge7513 you can input a laptop into the hub or stream you tube from a tablet etc to the hub.
I have never heard you be so enthusiastic about a product.
I love your videos. I'm pretty old school even tho I'm youngish. Vinyl, CDs. No streaming or active speakers for me. Just physical media. Still I never miss any of your stuff. Great thoutfull content with great production. Here's to another 10 years.
Hey this a real rave review, and for sheer hard work, apart from the quality of his products, I feel Mads deserves it.
Hi John,
Was wondering if you could run a video on what brings the magic with Hi-fi gear? You mention with the Kii that it delivers what we think we want, “but how many of us will actually part with our hard earned cash”. You also bought the Klipsch stating “they were coloured but were fun”. There was also the schiit freya, and now this vid on the Buchardt where the most enjoyable profile is one the engineers didn’t want to release.
I’ll get to my recent journey shortly, but perhaps you could do a video on the type of imperfections we should be looking for depending on our tastes, possibly covering:
Frequency response
Roll off
Smoothness, warmth
Leading edges
Punch, power, impact
Soundstage
Room reflections
My journey - Moved house a year and a half ago and was instantly disappointed by how bad my lounge sounded with my existing system.
So I ordered the Dutch and Dutch…
Seems to cover all the bases right?
Cheer,
Rich

There's something important (to me) that wasn't mentioned. The hub has no analog pre-out, so you can't connect a subwoofer to this system unless it's also WISA compatible. The Buchardt website says you have to buy one of two Primare preamps if you want to use your own sub, and those preamps are $1,800 and $4,500 and it's unclear but seems you then lose the
could you try out A700 (the floor stander) as well?
unless A500 is enough for big rooms as well
@@wojciechczupta I returned my A500's because they just didn't have enough quantity to fill my large room.

This is, quite easily, the single most well-produced audio review I’ve ever seen. You spoil us, sir.
How’d you get Jana on the other side of the camera?!
maybe they are trying to promote her for future episodes....somewhat like Linus Tech Tips where Linus doesn't host all the episodes. takes the load of John.
John compared that combination of the KEF Reference 1 plus the Hegel to the KII 3!!! Both sets are more than 3 times the price of the A500 ;-)
I use KEF LS 50W’s with a REL subwoofer, works great for me.
Just looking Around where can I buy these special stands you mentioned?
@@MarkusThalheimer Burchardt is currently finalising the design and will be releasing them soon.
Final Q - have you tried the JBLs with room correction, e.g. Dirac - does that equal or beat the Buchardts?
He went through the Klipsch Forte 3s and JBLs in the NAD M33 video, with Dirac.
I’d also love to hear the answer to that question.
Thanks.
Amazing review!!!
I’m hooked so I’m getting a pair!
John, what brand are those floor stands you used please?
Cheers

You got my attention when you mentioned ''low level enhancement''
Edit: I had a great experience dealing with Mads in the past despite the fact that the S400 didn't work out in my room at the time.
BTW do not change your game, you are very relatable and open minded, the is most important
attribute of a reviewer. Hope to see your reviews for long time.
I find your videos extremely enjoyable! I had my A500 for two weeks now and I agree with your review completely.! I hope that Mads will continue developing improvements to this speaker. The feeling that a new update will instill 🤩
What master tuning have you settled on?
Just looking Around : I think the stock tune is the one for my taste. I like the stock v2 but sometimes it is to much forward in the soundstage. I have not tried the 3 way
Great review! Dig your view point and straight up delivery. Very refreshing and honest. Congrats on 10 years!
Peter Borelli thank you so much for your perspective, I was wondering the exact same thing!
@@blankface6866 You are welcome.
But I don't understand. What exactly were you wondering?
@@peterborelli3877 Hi Peter. Do you have the raw nordic oak S400s? If so, are you considering selling?
Yes
Just to be clear the DSP master tunings still work via XLR.
Congrats on 10 years! I really enjoy your take on audio gear.
Congrats on the 10 year anniversary John! Absolutely love your approach to (high end) audio reviews, its so refreshing to see and look forward to watching all the other reviews in the future.
Great video John. How would you say the low end compares to the phantom reactors or original phantoms if you’ve heard them?
Yes I was considering the formation Duo. A comparison between the two would be great. 👌🏻
Rainer Gieringer I have a Cambridge phono pre and a basic pro-ject turntable and love the sound over the KEF50W. Blind test before you upgrade!
Scrap them both and go for the Monitor Audio Silver 500 7G and a suitable integrated amp.
Hi John
Yes room Correction does go a long way to also cover up deficiencies in the complete Audio system chain, even if you have a separates System with an added room Correction module. Love your videos.
Best regards
Hermann
Great review mate!
So now the question is: these or kef ls50w’s with twin REL T7i’s? 🤔
Hi John,
Do you know if there are any plans for an app for remote control? Seems like a logical step.
Cheers,
Alex.
There is a plan for that yes :)
What brand are the white speaker stands that you are using with the A500’s?
Just what I was wondering too :)
Great job & how would I add a subwoofer or can you?
You can add a wisa subwoofer
What power cables are recommended for active speakers like the Buchard A500? It seems that you are using just a regular power cable: 07:22.
Congratulations on ten years. Great video once again. Thank you.
I really felt your enthusiasm. I really want these speakers/hub. Thx for such an excellent review.
Amazing! I wonder if the new KEF LS50 W II will close the gap much? Probably not in the bass, I see the KEFs will go to 40Hz , but I'm still very keen to watch the comparisons (or listen).
Thanks, this is incredibly interesting. I was going to purchase the Hagel 95 with the CSS custom speaker set. Will need to demo this now!
Good review John. It seems to be an amazing system, even at almost four grand............congrats on your 10th anniversary!
