Caress of steel is criminally underrated, it’s my favourite album, period! Heavy, beautiful chaos, in my opinion the Necromancer ranks up there as one of their best songs, and the fountain of Lamneth part two ‘No one at the bridge’ is my favourite song! Enjoy this gentlemen, this is one heavy album!

I was in a band in high school and our drummer was amazing. He started a Rush cover band that was successful and went on to have a great career as a pro drummer. He ended up getting to know Neil Peart through co-authoring drumming books with him. Cool story. He also has nothing but effusive praise for all the guys in Rush in how humble and cool they are/were. RIP Neil.

They opened their shows with this song for a few years. It was the first song i ever heard them play, at my first Rush gig in ‘77 when i was a 16yo kid cutting class with my buds to go up to Port Huron to see Rush. Snuck in a backstage door and watched the soundcheck even. Magical Youth! I met Neil twice in ‘79, if you could call handshake “meeting”. 😎 Even in ‘79, you could tell that Neil wasn’t into meeting the fans. Nary a smile to be found on his face. Geddy was pleasant, Alex was talkative. Gregarious even. There’s one for Che to look up! 🤣

I learned about Bastille Day because of this song. A friend of my older brothers heard me listening to it one day, and asked if I knew what it was about. Which I didn't, so he `fixed` that for me. Funny too, because he was about 16 at the time, and he's now been a history professor for decades. I guess some people are born to it.

  • @stevedahlberg8680

You guys are exactly right. My friend who was also a guitar player and in my grade in junior high turn me on to rush by listening to 2112 and hemispheres on 8-track tape on his little Boombox one night. I immediately fell in love but several months later I remember going out and buying this album which is earlier, and I immediately had to learn that chord progression for this song. With the barre chords, it's so fun to play.
I think that I had heard of the Bastille before and I knew it had something to do with French history but that's about it. And just as you say, I had to go look it up. And of course we didn't have the internet to look up lyrics or anything but luckily the lyrics were printed on the sleeve in the record album. Once it dawned on me that they were talking about cutting off people's heads for treating them so poorly for so long, I remember thinking wow, this is pretty cool.

Back in the day, Bastille Day and it’s historical significance was known globally. And yes, it is indeed recognized as the start of the French Revolution. Back in the 80s, I think I first encountered Bastille Day in junior high or high school history textbooks. Maybe that’s no longer curriculum though.
🎉Great stuff, guys! It’s always uplifting to see people get blindsided by just how fundamentally talented this band is, at all levels. Great to check in with this song again. I was playing D&D in the early 80s, in high school when I was introduced to the Caress of Steel album, into which this tune is literally etched. It brought back memories. And yes, Neil Pearl’s lyrics here are, as per always, insightful, impactful and moving and they do force you to ponder and wonder and yes, you sometimes have to look up a word or phrase or historical or geographical reference. Not a lot of bands do that for me.
These three Canadian dudes will continue to impress you on your journey with them. I’m both happy for you and a bit jealous of the sonic thrill ride of awesomeness you’re about to experience!

I'm old and they taught us this in elementary school. It was easy to remember because they equated it with our 4th of July. It is also evident by the lyrics, with any inkling about the French Revolution (Marie Antoinette said let me eat cake, the guillotine etc...). It began with the storming of the Bastille and some beheadings. I actually found it quite interesting, even as a grade schooler. I don't know what they're teaching in History over the past couple of decades. I can only imagine.

I used to stare at this album cover, listen to the music, and get transported to another world. The Necromancer on this album is one of my all-time favorite songs. I’ve blown a few speakers listening to it. For some weird reason it just sounds better the louder it gets. The 70s had tons of cerebral hard rock/proggy music that, you would put on your headphones, turn out the lights, and journey to other worlds and other eras.

I do know what Bastille Day is.
It is the day the people of France took their country back and excuted the corrupt monarchy.
I do believe they celebrate it in Quebec since they are the French province in Canada.
This album was the one their record company hated and they wouldn't promote it.
I really like this album and one of my faves off the album is The Fountain of Lamneth.

Bastille Day is a French holiday the commemorates the opening of the prisons to let out the poor peasants during the revolution. It was followed by the beheading of the king and queen and all their loyal followers. The resulting chaos led to the rise of Napoleon as the next dictator.

Listening to Rush can make you a smarter person about so many subjects. I know it did for me. Rush fan Sebastian Bach (Skid Row) once pointed out that he noticed a Rush album - 2112 I think - was dedicated to Ayn Rand, so he got and read a copy of Rand's book 'The Fountainhead'. He asked, how many bands do you know who got their fans "all fired up about literature"?

Back in school when they used to teach history. We learned about the French Revolution. Everyone I knew were familiar with the lyrics. Also read “A Tale of Two Cities”. Especially like the lyrics pertaining to the paupers being on their knees when the king walked by and then the Kings were later on their knees. In other words, placed onto the guillotine. You were put in the guillotine stock and were kneeling when you were (beheaded) executed.

IMO this is where Rush started to transcend to the next level. This album is in the top 3 for me and that top 3 continues to rotate.

This is music for psychopaths 😂
That's what my work buddy said, when I put this on in the car, driving home.
He's a singer of dutch folk music.
A smile and a tear music ,we call it.
I hate it ,and he hates my music.
    So,I think I'm a psychopath.
This is a verry nice reaction, thanks guys, from a crazy dutchie. 👍😁💪

I know little about France but I bet a lotta French people would dig this as a national anthem. Real French music fans, anyway. Neal should've tried to write the USA a new Anthem, too. (The Rush song "Anthem" doesn't count! That's a straight up party song...)

'Bastille day' was a popular Rush song from what is arguably their worst album in their catalog - 'Caress of steel' (1975) ... Both Geddy Lee and Alex Lifeson later admitted that the band was high on recreational drugs and apparently lost focus while making that record... and it sounded like it.
Neil Peart (drums) started writing the band's lyrics from their 2nd album 'Fly by night' ... so that Geddy and Alex could focus on the music more... Peart got bolder on their 3rd album 'Caress of steel' and wrote these grand fantasy concepts w/ 'The Necromancer'... 'The Fountain of Lamneth'... He was proud of his work, but people did not get it.
Rush was struggling to find an audience on tour and 'Caress of steel' was not a popular record upon release... the band recalled playing to small, empty venues on tour... making no money... and getting deeper into debt. Returning home to Canada penniless, Rush wanted to make another album and their managers had to beg their label Mercury Records not to drop the band... They convinced label heads that the next Rush album would be "more commercial" and it was make-or-break time...
Peart said that the trio felt strongly about the music for their next album and were under pressure to deliver something more commercial... Once the label gave the OK to record their 4th album, Rush were angry... they felt everyone was against them, so the album '2112' was inspired by the trio's solidarity and belief in their music... They would not compromise their vision... they would not bend to the will of anyone outside the band... and they did not care what other thought about them.
Peart wrote the epic track '2112' inspired by the works of writer Ayn Rand and it was about a bleak future ruled by religious extremists... and in this future, someone discovers a musical instrument from the past and begins playing music to change people's perceptions... and the musician is reprimanded for his music by the rulers. However, his music does inspire change and a revolution as a result...
The '2112' record was what resonated w/ rock fans in 1976/ '77 and it sold platinum in the US (3x platinum to date) and saved Rush's career... and, more importantly, gave the band their creative freedom... The success of '2112' actually pushed sales of 'Caress of steel' past gold sales (half million copies)
