Too bad about not liking Geddy's voice. You have to be able to stand that to get into the lyrics, and Neil Peart's lyrics are also one of Rush's greatest draws for their fans. You're really missing something if you can't get into that.
I've never understood people with that issue. It's a rock 'n' roll voice. I've never NOT liked it. Don't get it, but to each their own.
I echo Jerry's message. I've known several people who werent fond of Geddys voice, but managed to explore Rush anyway and became Rush fans as well!! - and you should already know us Rush fans go 100 for these guys because they earned it. The music and lyricism puts them in class by themselves. You don't have to like Geddys voice, but his voice is perfect for Neil's lyrics. If you guys dig in a little and get to know them, you will experience their magic.
Or you wont, I suppose might be possible. Not if given a fair chance Lol.
I consider GEDDY'S VOICE as just an another great instrument , and it's perfect for their style.
You did not have to "stand" his voice. His voice was excellent. If someone didn't like it, too bad. That's their problem and their loss.
When I first heard Rush in '76, one of my first thoughts was that they could use a better singer. After giving it some more time I realized his singing's just fine, he just doesn't have a conventional singing voice...but he's doing it anyway. Once I saw it as overcoming a bit of a handicap my attitude changed and accepted they were meant to be a three piece.
I covered this song in a band a lifetime ago and yes, its as hard as it sounds.
RUSH=LEGENDS!!!!!!!!!!
I felt the same when I first heard Geddy, but the more I listened to Rush the more I realized he has the perfect voice for their band.
This version live from exit stage left , i believe
Absolutely love Rush. You have to review their YYZ, live in Rio 2002. It’s one of their other epic instrumentals and the crowd go absolutely wild!!!
The Rio audience temporarily turned Rush into a quartet during YYZ
One of the best live bands i've ever seen.
Saw them twice in Holland, they did sound amazing!!
Nice and loud, maybe to loud for some people 😜
Good reaction, guys 💪👍
By the way, geddy's voice? Maybe you have to see them live, crazy good voice 🔥👊
I've found listening to Rush too painful since Neil's passing. These three and Zappa are my gods. I was devastated by the death of Neil.
❤️🕊we hope it gets easier Saturninebear!
Arf!
I play guitar, and covered a ton of Rush songs over the years, but I feel the same. His musicianship was inspirational regardless of your instrument and after losing him, I've barely picked up my guitar despite playing for 30 years. :(
In the mid 70s I saw Rush lead off for Zappa in Virginia
@@thomaswalkowiak815 WOW. The only time I got to see Zappa live was the final tour. Saw Rush a few times, but that would be a mind-blowing double bill.
I see Rush I click! The song was inspired by a series of nightmares that Alex Lifeson had. I never tire of hearing it. Geddy's voice can be an acquired taste, I personally like it.
Other instrumentals
Where's my thing/Here it is live in Dallas
YYZ live in Rio.
Cheers
Alex Lifeson the most underrated, underappreciated guitarist in rock history
No he's not he's massively rated and won multiple awards for decades, it's a myth
No he's not. He's well spoken of. Try Tommy Bolin.
Geddy's voice is unusual for sure, but after hearing him all along I've gotten used to him and also appreciate how good he is at all he does.
Rush is an extremely deep Rabbit hole , The thing with these guys their music can not be pegged , be ready to expect the unexpected in a great way , These guys were one of the best live bands ever three hours was normal for them ,
I love the tone of that white Gibson it screams Im a pre 80s Rush fan keep um coming
Now you have a chance to buy that very guitar. Alex is auctioning off many of his iconic guitars, and that's one up for grabs.
Agree, it wails. Crazy tones all around. The bass is so dirty
I have some things to say. First, I love your channel and how you, as musicians, don’t have to keep stopping the song because you can just listen and remember your perception of the song as a whole. Secondly, as a rabid RUSH fan, I must wholeheartedly advise that you please listen to more of Geddy’s vocals. I get that some folks find it unappealing. However, I would bet that if you were to listen to more classic RUSH, you would enjoy a new appreciation of one of the best rock vocalists ever. 🤘🏻
Thanks for the tip Ed, we looking forward to hearing more!
I'd recommend they go the other direction and try out mid-late Rush. The radio only ever plays Fly By Night -> Tom Sawyer era and that's the range people gripe about the most. But when they reached the 80's and especially the 90's, he sang closer to his speaking range. Geddy Lee on Tom Sawyer and Geddy Lee on Cold Fire, are almost 2 entirely different vocalists!
Such an amazing instrumental from the greatest rock trio of all times! The entire album is amazing.
This is quite simply the greatest rock ‘n’ roll instrumental ever. In the Rush documentary one of my favorite parts is when Vinnie Paul from Pantera said that drummers would compare themselves by whether or not they could play the song.
Scott Ian of Anthrax said that when he managed to play the song from beginning to end, he could finally call himself a musician.
Thus is just epic. Saw the Hemispheres Tour at the Palladium and was blown away. Saw them every tour from Hemispheres to Counterparts and they never disappointed.
Saw the Hemispheres Tour 1978 Maple Leaf Gardens Toronto my and the bands hometown was in high school this blonde girl asked me out to see this concert thought I was in the twighlight zone for her asking no girl asks a guy out in those days concert was amazing as were the next 26 I went to as well last 2015 still hard to listen to Neil play and not shed a tear he was my superhero not Batman Superman just him
Another great Rush instrumental is YYZ, Rush in Rio, Live version has got great energy. Epic performance.
Well well well..I had to do a double-take when i saw this lol.Rush on Sight After Dark?..Whoda thunk it? So glad you did this one guys. Studio-wise was the last track on the last of their 'long epics' albums, Hemispheres , in 1978. So Genesis-wise, after 'Trick Of The Tail' and 'Wind And Wuthering' , then Steve Hackett left , and Rush's Hemispheres came out the same year as '..And Then There Were Three '..As for Supertramp, this was a year before 'Breakfast in America'...Rush did a ton of instrumentals, guess I'd better get over to Patreon lol :)
Right ☺️? Thanks for breaking it down Ken; we’d love to hear more!
Three outstanding Musicians from Canada bottom line..
A more recent song they did live check out Working man live in Cleveland , the guitar player plays above the fret board , they change up the tempo three times in transitions , but lots and lots of others to check out
Music that will never get you laid. My mom used to say, "Rush? They look like witches!"
🤣hilarious!
If you want another Rush instrumental, try YYZ live at Rio. Rush were slightly after Genesis and Supertramp, a great live band. I actually really like Geddy’s voice, especially around the late 70’s early 80’s. Great reaction from SAD!
Thanks for the info Tim, we appreciate you!
Technically, Rush was formed a year after Genesis, and one year prior to Supertramp. But yeah, as far as any mainstream air play, Rush came later. Rush didn't really start entering widespread public consciousness until Signals / Moving Pictures in the early 1980s.
Ha - yeah, Geddy's voice is an acquired taste. But Rush is one of my favorite bands. This song from the Hemispheres album hit in 1978, so I think it was a little bit after Genesis' progressive rock era (sorry - I'm not a big Genesis fan). But I love Rush, man. The first album I got was 2112 in 1979 or 1980, and I was hooked. "YYZ" is another great instrumental by Rush, but I think you can get used to Geddy's voice. I would recommend the live performance of "Xanadu" from the Exit Stage Left tour. It's better than the recording. Also recommended: the whole 22 minute long first side of 2112; "The Camera Eye"; "Spirit of Radio"; "The Analog Kid"; "Anthem".
Thanks for the suggestions Tony!
So good! Love Rush! Hope we get to more soon. ✌🏻❤️🎼
Us too, thanks for watching Amber!
This was like watching a funeral...
The audio version of this video isn't great but the song is absolutely amazing...
Rush is amazing and only three guys...
WTF...
RUSH is THE PERFECT EXAMPLE of the fluidity of MASTERING TIME SIGNATURES! I play drums and there are a few things that you need to know about Neil Peart’s ( pronounced PEER-T) character: First he writes the lyrics so he knows in advance what TYPE of song it’s meant to be ie ballad, driver, etc. Second he COMPOSES on the drums… like a carpenter who looks at a set of blueprints before building the object. Neil lays out a SKETCH in his mind of the VOICES of the drumset and builds the song from there. He is also a great LISTENER knowing when NOT to step over Geddy’s singing or Alex’s solos! Finally, he had perfect timing and fluidity of time changes. He said himself that it’s not about COUNTING the time signatures as much as fluid motion to change the tempo without counting: in other words it should FLOW! He hates repeating the same drum patterns in the same song meaning if he plays a fill one way the first time around he will play it differently the second time around. IE. Rolls down the toms the first time around and triplets or quads (all four limbs) the second time around. In short there will NEVER be another like him on planet earth 🌍 🌏 🌎! REST IN PEACE PROFESSOR!
With heart felt admiration and sincerity!
Gary
Rush have done many instrumentals, no one does it better, check out some of their other instrumentals.
Try Jacob's Ladder, kinda short instrumental with an attitude, imo one of their best. Geddy's voice, one of my favourites.
Thanks for the tip Ro Ca!
Second that vote for Jacobs Ladder. In fact you can't really go wrong with most of the Exit Stage Left live performances.
When they first hit the airwaves back in the '70s, I admit that I was turned off by Geddy's voice. As time went on, I'd occasionally hear a new song on the radio that I liked despite his voice, then eventually I came to appreciate what an amazing singer he is. 2112 provides his full range of voice. An instrumental set that you may like is "Where's My Thing? / Here it is!" as performed on their Clockwork Angels tour. It includes a typically amazing drum solo.
I felt the same about Geddy's voice for years, but then when I started to focus on the lyrics of Rush songs along with the band's amazing musicianship, I realized Geddy's voice is perfect to deliver Neil Peart's lyrics. Now I consider Geddy Lee my favorite vocalist behind Roger Daltrey of The Who.
This is a common sentiment. Geddy's voice takes a little getting used to, but in time most people come to really love it.
I hated the voice at first, but now it's just a great rock voice.
ha i appreciate your honesty
but these guys are the most prolific and talented band in rock
i'm out
Go check out Working Man, Live in Cleveland.
La Villa Strangiato was their first instrumental. It was amazing when it came out because it was so different from what we normally listened to. It jpened the door for soooooo many more instrumentals they did. "YYZ" was wonderful. But then I think they just kept getting better with every album. "Where's My Thing?" , "Leave that Thing Alone", "Limbo", "The Main Monkey Business", "Malignant Narcissism" ... amazing! I gotta admit that I do like Geddy's voice. It's got such a warm quality
YYZ Live in Rio, if you want to see the greatest crowd reaction ever.
Geddys voice mellowed over time, maybe try listening to a recorded 70's song for 30 secs and then switch to him singing it from 2000 on live. its a big contrast.
"Slowly convert you into Rush fans."
It happened to me. My best friend bought 2112 and played it for me on the first decent stereo system I ever heard. I didnt like it at all. I did not care for Geddy's voice. That was 1977? Rush is now my favorite band of all time. It happened slowly, over time. By the mid 80's it took hold. The die was cast. I saw the Power Windows tour, 85?, the first time I saw them live, and it was all over. Die hard Rush fan for life.
After seeing several of your reaction videos now, it was clear you didnt enjoy this as much as BOC The Vigil. Its ok, I think its entirely plausible you might become fans.
Might I suggest "Ghost of a chance" studio version for a good Geddy singing experience.
Funny...I heard at the end of the video, one of you mentioned "Supertramp". I've heard every Supertramp song. LOL, I still dont care for them, among the biggest reasons, the lead singers voice.
😆that’s incredibly hilarious!
We actually really dug this instrumental and would love to hear some great Rush that our patrons feel surpasses [what we think of] Geddy’s voice. We appreciate you sharing Kenneth, thanks!
@@SightAfterDark So I've watched a few of your reaction videos now.
One observation. Its hard to tell what Dan is thinking during a reaction. He's probably a good poker player, you cant really tell if he loves it or its just ok. Sifa, on the other hand, you pretty much know exactly whats going on in her brain. The difference between this reaction and BOC the Vigil is stark.
And its all cool, we all get it or at least I do. Some music just hits you in the right spot. BOC and Rush do that for me...Supertramp never does and never will.
You’re the first one to say this ☺️ we usually get the exact observations about us from the viewers, thanks!
How good is this.... Brilliant once again guys
You might like Geddy's voice better 1980's on.
Rush is a band that has to grow on you. But if you grew up on them you could hear and appreciate the growth. For Rush heads we were well into them by this album.
Top-tier Rush!
No disrespect. You will convert. :) LOL Hear me out;
I am a 48 year HARD CORE RUSH fan. Picked up their debut album when released in 1974. I was 14. Lifelong FAN. My wife absolutely despised Geddy's voice and the band for 30 years. Every time I inserted one of the masterpieces her immediate response was "turn that shit off." And everytime I would tell her very slowly "you don't know what you are missing." When Neil passed she couldn't help but hear/read all of the accolades and said to herself, in her words "oh shit, maybe he was right all along" and started listening. She is now a fan and loves Geddy's voice.
It can and will be done. His voice will grow on you. Even if it takes 30 years. :)
❤️thanks Michael!
This is the first Rush reaction video that I've heard did not like Geddy Lee's voice. Every other reaction video, with vocals, loved his distinct voice.
Check out YYZ (code for Pearson Intl airport in Toronto) Live in Rio and Rush-Best Intro Ever. Their musical talents will blow you away in those two videos.
Just dropped this one yesterday :)
ua-cam.com/video/IJxbFPssHu4/v-deo.html
i love geddy voice
Try YYZ live in Rio ,
YYZ Live in Rio is another amazing Rush instrumental.
Just happened to stumble upon your channel and like some of the other commenters here, I see Rush, I click. Three prime examples if you want to hear the true genius of Geddy Lee’s voice. Tears, from their album 2112. The Pass, from their album, Roll the Bones. BTW, RTB Is a great album start to finish. And thirdly, from Permanent Waves, lend your ears to Entre Nous. I strongly advise jumping down the Rush rabbit 🕳. You truly don’t know what you’re missing. Three masters of their craft!
Thanks for watching Tommy! We hope our patrons suggest more!
If you really want to see them go crazy on the base and guitar check out Working Man Live in Cleveland. For another instrumental live YYZ in Rio.
That's odd, because one of the things that really draws me to Rush is Geddy's singing. Especially when he really let's it rip on songs like 'Freewill'. His voice is very distinctive, which may turn some people off.
Geddy’s vocal performance on Temples of Syrinx is mind blowing.
Geddy's voice is a love or hate thing. I can't stand that eunuch voice. Love their instrumentals though
Yeah something’s just happen like that. Still an undeniably excellent band!
You must know that so many people don't like his voice xd
I swear to god If you want a perfect vocal performance in terms of tone and delivery from Geddy Lee listen to Available Light from the album Presto. Perfect !! BTW, his voice sounds very good from Signals to Presto 82 to 89. The earlier stuff is too high pitched and ''witchy'' and after that, well....Age I suppose.
..
Nobody ever mentions Available Light. Even the Rush fans I've encountered over the years don't seem to "get" that beautiful song. The producer for Presto said once "Everyone knows how hard Neil hits the drums, but on Available Light, I've never seen anyone hit the drums and cymbals as hard as he did on the last minute of that song!"
Passion...and one of Neil's best lyrics, in my opinion. Thanks for acknowledging this underated song, brother!
@@JasonSmith-jr7jh Only 4 reviews on UA-cam which is real crime. I guess people who do reactions only pick the songs that have the most views otherwise the number would be way higher. One of Rush's very best. READ YOUR COMMENTS PEOPLE AND LISTEN TO SUGGESTIONS !!!
Yyz live in Rio. You've got to check it out...they don't fit anywhere except for being RUSH!!!!
I’m always surprised no one ever comments to point out the Raymond Scott tribute they do in the middle of the song to his epic tune “Powerhouse” which was greatly popularized in Bugs Bunny cartoons.
So I guess I’ll take the lead here to drop that little bit of musical history in hopes others will be encouraged to do the same with other stuff.
I always love to learn more about music and stuff and just felt I should chime in about it to highlight how so much in the world of music tends to travel full circle.
Did you know that they pay tribute to Raymond Scott in the middle section of this song? ; )
@@Katehowe3010Now I do!! 😃
@@CANDOKNOWHOW Forgive me for this mate. The temptation was just too strong!
@@Katehowe3010 😂😂😂
I’m not tripping, and found it funny that I wrote it like that when looking back.
It was a bit long winded.. and may have come off as a bit condescending (unintentionally) as I could’ve dropped the history, but I was seriously surprised I got to it first cause It’s usually the other way around where I’m learning of it from many others in the comments.
How the heck did I get to be first this time?
Raymond Scott is pretty awesome though, so I couldn’t ignore his absence down here.. as I guess Rush wanted people to know as well.
For such a pretty intricate composition, it’s also showing Rush’s sense of humor to add it suddenly in the middle of the tune. If I recall correctly, it was often featured in cartoon scenes where a robot or other assembly line like automated system is rhythmically pulsing through whatever task it has.
So... Ken Gregory... It's all about you you you YOU... "Telling" us what is relevant... LOL... This is so highly representative of most people commenting reactions on UA-cam...So pathetic, it's funny ("funny", here, is a polite word for "immature"...)...
All 3 are virtuosos on their instruments greatest band of all time lol lyrically and musically Any Rush is good Rush try driven, half the world, locknand key body electric, prime mover mission, marathon, big money ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
Neal was a percussionist. He had cow bells, chimes, a xylophone just to name a few.
Not sure what Rush you have done to date, but a lot of people who find Geddy’s voice grating from the early years will find that it mellowed and he found more of his sweet spot as they moved into the 80s and 90s. Try some songs from signals or grace under pressure or power windows to see if it still turns you off. I find it fits their music perfectly from those eras and separates them even further as a band! Cheers and Rush on!
Thanks Michael!
Probably greatest rock instrumental of all time..probably could have been a minute shorter and tighter..u can't have it All...
Subtitled: "An Exercise in Self-Indulgence". With exception of guitar solo in middle, this was recorded in 1 take. Making the Hemispheres album was so strenuous they almost called it quits. Geddy said the range of whole album was too high even for his goofy voice. It's the proggiest of their albums and imo top 3.
This is 78. Genesis released ...and Then There Were Three in 78, there first w/o guitarist Steve Hacket and third since Peter Gabriel left and Phil Collins took up singing.
78 was between Supertramo's Even in The Quietist Moments and Breakfast in America, two of there most successful and recognizable albums. Breakfast was the next to last ST album before Roger Hodgson left the band.
This performance of La Villa sounds like a bucket of farts compared to Exit Stage Left and the studio version (Hemispheres). No doubt in part because Alex was minus the use of a finger on his left hand due to an injury. Why on Earth is this the “official” version?!
Saw Rush 18 times. Try Bye Thor and the Snow Dog from the Rush in Rio concert next. I also want to recommend The Spirit of Radio from the Maple Leaf Gardens concert 1984 . Geddy's voice was the perfect voice for Rush.
If you don't like Geddy's voice just quit now. But that would be foolish because you got one of your highest view counts with Rush. Keep listening, you will love this band for their ingenious compositions and killer progressive rock jams. Truly a great band. Don't give up!!
Best rock instrumental of all time! Period. Don't argue. Okay maybe YYZ! ;-)
This song live is unbelievable.... I dare you you to fall into the Rush rabbit hole
I don’t think you can “fit” Rush in between others. They are a total standalone musician rock symphony. Nobody can touch them for pure talent. There will never be a 3 some band that sounds like a philharmonic, ever.
Yeah I'm with you - Geddy's voice has just never clicked for me. Power to anyone who likes it, but it's always been the big roadblock for me. Love their instrumental tracks though.
Try Rush: Leave That Thing Alone. It's juicy-loosey instrumental.
If you've got a bit of spare cash, 'Whitey', the Gibson 355 Alex is playing here (and heard on many, many other Rush songs) is going to auction for charity next month.
You guys will absolutely become Rush fans after to all of their albums Just the best trio among the others-ELP for example so keep exploring the Rush catalog Their my favorite after Jethro album Tull
Check out YYZ live in Rio. 40,000 fans "sing" along with an instrumental.
This was a super reaction. You two obviously know what great musicianship is all about! And yes, I wasn't into Geddy's vocals when I began listening to RUSH either, but gradually, I came to love it. His vocal register drops a bit during the 1980's, so you might try "Analog Kid", "Subdivisions", or "Tom Sawyer". Also, "Leave That Thing Alone" is another excellent instrumental. Thanks much! ☮
Geddy's voice grows on you, and changes with age. I think for the better. But this is one of my favorite instrumentals of all time. I like it even more than YYZ.
I really hate this live version of the song. The studio version is far supreme.
After seeing your-music video try Headlong flight studio version and Natural Science studio version , On natural science after the the intro get ready for some big changes , 🙃
The full title of this song is "La Villa Strangiato (An Exercise in Self-Indulgence)"
Alex was not using the volume pedal, he was playing with the volume control to create a mood. Overall good reaction though.
Concert. I've seen them ... Five times? Maybe more. Always a good time. They are ... were ... a band who clearly loved what they did and were friends. Just a great vibe.
a typical over complex rush song here, too much, too many, too many notes, too much good intentions - but does it takes your heart? They are perfect, but is it enough to be perfect? What will they do now, without Neil? They left so many great songs, i still love the trees and closer to the heart, also xanadu, limelight and many more - but this is - maybe only for me - a bit to technical at all.
If you can't take Geddy's shrill banshee like vocals check out YYZ
Also Try the Garden live Clockwork angels tour , you will hear a different side of Geddys voice , With Violins this is a more softer side of Rush ,
Neils name is pronounced peert. I made the same mistake . Try his drum solo live in Frankfurt Germany
This was written (or concept) by Alex after waking up from a rough dre am.
YYZ is your next instrumental from Rush!!!
Alex Lifeson is one of the GREATEST GUITARISTS of ALL TIME!!
Rush are not Rush without Alex Geddy Neil and the voice!!
Never been a fan of rush... too shrill, no soul, too dependent on effects... B-
Awesome even today, watching them both play synth with their feet.
Rush proves that amazing prog can just be damned fun to listen to.
When listening to thus piece of music, how does one not jump up and go into air guitar mode?
Rush is the GOAT
Rush is a lifelong journey.
if you want energy try working man live in cleveland time machine tour
Nice to see this on here. This album and this song blew me away when they came out.
This is a video of the studio version, try a Live version next their are many !! ✌
It's always about the music. Don't kill the messenger!
You should do Rush 2112, it’s a great story!
MASTERCLASS MUSICALITY! EARGASM!
YYZ is another great instrumental
HOW DO YOU SUM UP RUSH? THREE KINGS 👑👑👑
When I first started listening to Rush, I really didn't like Geddy's voice. I listened for the drumming. I eventually grew to enjoy Geddy's voice and they quickly became my favorite band after I saw them live for the first time. I recommend listening to some of their "newer material" from the 90's. Geddy's voice really came into it's own, particularly on Presto and Counterparts. He sings in a lower register and I personally think these albums have his best singing performances of all of their records. I highly recommend the songs Cut to the Chase, Nobody's Hero, The Pass (one of the band's favorite songs they've ever recorded. It's spectacular. Read the lyrics on this one as it plays.) and Available Light. Even if you don't do reaction videos to these songs, I think you owe it to yourself to listen to them as they are some of their best work from this era.
I agree, except I think the change starts earlier. He's much more controlled even on "Signals" and "Grace Under Pressure" than he was in the early days. Just listen to something like "Distant Early Warning" and compare it to "2112." He's singing, not shrieking.
Listen to the later stuff as Ged has toned the voice down a lot
Working man in Ohio best ever
