Sandu is our pride and joy. You can not look at this man performing and lot laugh or smile. They are watching a normal music channel that happens to air some other Romanian artist singing love pop
So fun fact, "Ciorba"'s a type of soup in Romanian, and while I don't want to say it isn't his actual last name, him being named "Sandru Soup" somehow makes this funnier. Also, from what little knowledge I have of Romanian internet culture, Sandru does seem to be a part of Romanian's version of "trash culture". I paradoxically can't think of an Italian equivalent (un crimine del quale non mi perdonerò mai), but if you know the Spanish side of things, Leticia Sabater might be a good analogue
Romanian guy here, while Sandu is part of a more underground culture, songs like his are many times used a party because their rhythm and simple, light-hearted lyrics, make them very easy to listen to. Usually they just involve an appreciation for partying, pretty girls and money. In fact, Sandu's style is even more basic than the usual manele that folks listen to at weddings or coming-of-age parties (in Romania, this is when someone turns 18), making, ironically, more wholesome. Because many people grew up with this type of music, it's still heard to this day, especially if you go to the seaside or mountains and come across an open area where people are barbecuing. One last thing to note is that, while many Romanians will swear to have never never listened to this type of music, even Sandu's video has over 40 million views, while the entire population of Romania is only half of that, and that's including people who are part of the diaspora and have left the Country to make a living elsewhere. The trend is the same if you go to most manele videos. And while it's obvious you can return to a video, it's still a significant number :) For us, this video is basically like a condensed view into rural Romania in the 2010s (teens?), and the fact that his name does translate to soup, the fact that the dancers are very likely bouncers he paid off from the nearest tavern, the fact that the girls are all various ages and were just picked for looking nice in a tight dress, the lyrics just being about him telling a girl she's very hot and how he wants to hook up with her, even the Record Company being Viper Production and shamelessly using the Dodge Viper's actual emblem with zero fucks given just because they thought it looked and sounded cool, all of it is just peak kitsch that transcends its own condition and ends up going straight through the other side to being entertaining and cool. Sandu just doesn't care, he's not aware of how it looks, he's just there to have fun, and because he actually is, you end up having fun too. In any case, thanks for your own glimpse into this piece of musical archaeology, always nice to see other folks trying to make sense of our corner of the Balkans. Take care and rock on!
