Well this log I left out on the driveway for about a month or two and it got this nice spalting. The other pieces were much more plain in color that went straight in the garage. Let me know if you need any help, Harry will work for wood.
Looks great after all that, Robert. However, when you were doing the push cuts on the bottom, I felt like I needed a respirator just to watch the video. Bill
Excellent turning Robert! I just started chucking my pieces like you, creating a tenon on the face that will end up being the top of bowl first. It makes me more confident while shaping the outside of my bowls. And I really thought Harry would keep his crotch in better shape.
Harry likes to put his crotch in places he shouldn't I guess. I find I can get better access to the bottom of the piece when shaping the bowl when I can mount it on the chuck and remove the tailstock.
Nice, punky stuff is a bitch, then the end results are usually outstanding. 1 thing I do is when i get to almost finish cuts, I’ll essentially saturate it in a 50/50 shellac/dna mix and let it sit for a few hours. Hardens it up really nicely and helps with the finish cuts.
Hi Robert I always enjoy your turnings. The comments from your little side kick always makes me smile. I am curious to know the make of the vacuum chuck you have been using. It looks like it is made from PVC. Bryan
Thanks Bryan, Harry does keep things exciting in the shop. I got the vacuum chuck at Southwest Area Turners Woodturning Symposium and they are made by this guy. www.odd-not.com/
Robert, I know it was a pain to turn that absolutely beautiful bowl. The spalting is amazing. What is the device you used to set the bowl in the banjo?
Thanks Paul! Yeah, I think punky wood can give just about any turner fits at times. My wife was a huge fan of the grain so it now sits on our dining table.
...😅😆🤣😂...ok...now that I got that out of my system...after lots and lots of work, it did turn out amazing...congrats!!! But in the future, if it were up to me, I'd leave a Harry crotch for someone else...I perfer ones with no names...more like an heirless crotch...🤔 👍
I was chuckling even before the video started. Love it.
I've got to admit I chucked when I came up with the title!

🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Beautiful work Robert...could you have Harry sing instead of hearing the vacuum pump whine🤣🤣...stay safe...press on 😎 Joe
I'm sure he has something up his sleeve one of these videos.
Yet another beautiful piece Robert. Harry sure knows his wood..
Thanks Patricia!
Turned out STUNNING in the end the spalting looks amazing
Thanks a lot Colin!
You turned a bad bot of wood into a great piece well done
Thanks !
Excellent Work Robert 👍👍
Thanks Brian!
Great job that grain is great
Thanks Scott!
i love harry
Harry says all the ladies say that.
😘😘it's a beautiful piece.
Thanks Ellen! I just wish the wood wasn't rotten in parts so I could of gotten a smoother surface.
Great sphalting in that wood. Looks excellent
Thanks! This piece was a bit difficult as the wood was getting pretty rotten.
Nice job. I have a Tallow tree to be brought down soon. I hope I get some good bowl blanks from it.

Robert, it turned out fantastic mate although it looked very dry and dusty to turn. Good effort
Thanks Alan! It was a bit of a pain and a huge mess!
Amazing! A piece of rotted, or as we call it, spalted wood into a treasure! I see you use Ack's products, it's my favorite finish product.
👍👍👍
This was a bit past it's prime as some of the wood was getting pretty soft. Ack's does work great as a sanding paste!
Rotten or no, it came out really pretty, Robert!
Thanks buddy!
Wood has an expiration date? Can’t say I have ever seen that! 😜🤪😵💫😂
Yeah, I was surprised to hear Harry wouldn't even eat it.
NICE WOOD!!!
Thanks!
That came out great! Nice choice of wood Harry
Thank you! Cheers!

Yeah...the shop is covered in a lovely layer of Harry's crotch dust now.

@@HodgePodgeWoodWorks that's exactly what I like about it also.

Yeah, I could of done that....but as usual I was up against the clock for getting a video done for the week.
I'm glad Harry talked you into turning that beautiful piece Robert. The spalting is out of this world gorgeous.
Agreed! Amazing Spaulting!
Thanks Jane! I love the spalting as well. If only it was just a bit less rotten I could of got cleaner cuts.

You put the time in on this one. And it shows. Beautiful piece. What happened to your soundtrack? This is the first vid I’ve watched without it.
Thanks for watching Adam! Alot of my recent videos haven't had music in them.
A piece worth the effort.
Well done for keeping Harry PG to!
Well it was quite an effort! Both getting rid of tear out and keeping Harry PG.
Robert, I know it was a pain to turn that absolutely beautiful bowl. The spalting is amazing. What is the device you used to set the bowl in the banjo?
That was basically just a morse taper with a matching spindle thread adapter on it. I believe I got it from here: www.packardwoodworks.com/110951.html
Beautiful grain in your platter. Turning wood like this is a real challenge; it generally gives me fits but I'm novice turner.
Thanks Paul! Yeah, I think punky wood can give just about any turner fits at times. My wife was a huge fan of the grain so it now sits on our dining table.
Love it. The open design really lends to showing off all the color. Well done. Glad you stuck with it.
Thanks Doug. I think I like the open shape as well. Definitely didn't want to have to try and sand it with the original design.

I've heard of a hairless beaver. I believe they are typically found in warmer climates.
@@HodgePodgeWoodWorks ...LOL...that was "heirless"...not "hairless"...I wasn't wanting to be that blatant...😅
Fantastic, Hodge! Lotta work dealing with that rotten crotch, but turned out great!
Yeah, I thought I was through with rotten crothes after I graduated college!
@@HodgePodgeWoodWorks 😂😂🤣😂
Beautiful 👌!
Thanks a lot 😊
Beautiful bowl!!! Do you use fine coffee powder or granules to fill the cracks?
Uhh...I wouldn't consider it a powder. Probably a medium grind or so.
Great work on a not so great piece. Harry should be ashamed to allow his crotch to get into such a condition
I tell him to treat his crotch better but he never listens!
Robert and Harry this is a amazing piece, the coffee grounds are they use or unused
They were used....but dried out. I don't really think it makes a difference to be honest.
Very beautiful Robert. I think Harry is a bit of a potty mouth.
That he is Jack!
