So excellent. I love how Steve Mariott wipes his face in the middle of his solo. Coolest, COOLEST man ever. Would have liked to have seen him live (and alive).
I realise this is a long time since you commented but I had to say that to me in those days were two people whose first names were Steve: McQueem and Marriott
Steve Marriott truly was a phenomenal vocalist and Ronnie's harmonies were beautiful. No trouble holding his own either as shown here, magic. I often read comments stating how underrated the Small Faces were yet they were HUGE (here in Oz) in their heyday. Extremely talented musicians, one and all. RIP Steve, Ronnie and Ian.
Ronnie Lane and Steve Marriott were a great Songwriting duo, who wrote some great tracks. This being the '60s they couldn't compete with the likes of Lennon and McCartney, Jagger and Richards, Bob Dylan, Pete Townshend and Ray Davies, but they were definitely up there with next level. The '60s was such an amazing time for music. The best ever in my opinion. You had The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, The Who, The Kinks, The Small Faces, The Doors, Donovan, Jimi Hendrix, Love, The Byrds, Syd Barrett's Pink Floyd, The Yardbirds, The Hollies, Buffalo Springfield, Crosby, Stills and Nash, Ten Years After, Lovin' Spoonful, Mama's and Papa's, The Zombies, Cream, The Band, Motown. The '60s was a great time of great Songwriting, great bands, the whole culture. It will never be beaten in my opinion, for the greatest music. The '70s had a lot of great Songwriters and bands, like David Bowie, Neil Young, Cat Stevens, Led Zeppelin, Mott The Hoople, Elton John, Sex Pistols, The Clash, Blondie, The Strangler's, Elvis Costello, Squeeze and many more, but I don't think it can compete with the majestic '60s. Simon & Garfunkel, another classic from the '60s.✌️
I can't say it enough & I say it all the time NOBODY to me & I MEAN NOBODY was or is better then Marriott! Hands down he owns ROCK music. Just watch him! His love of this band is so genuine! He's "it" & that's that to me, & the people he played with - Good! God! Ronnie Lane amazingly gifted, Jones a GREAT drummer & MAC wow ! I rest my case & I haven't even begun to talk about Humble Pie yet!! Aww Marriott, threw away the mold when they made him. The older I get the more I miss Marriott.
Oh am so happy to read your comment, I agree and I say it all the time - in Rock music there was no one finer and most likely never will be then Marriott and he only played with the best because he WAS the best - there ya have it. Cheers!
I was so lucky to see the SF and the Who in 1968 at the Sydney Stadium, Australia! Was anyone else there? I saw the Who another 3 times after that but unfortunately never saw the SF again :(
Cheers to you too, Marriott the king... was lucky enough to see him a few times with the DTs and Packet of 3,... Pie and Small Faces were before my time, but great to have access to these vids now...
An excellent song love every second of this, on my playlist every morning now! I do believe every now and then Kenney looks at Stevie like Stevie is simply mad (aka nuts) ...!!
A true R&R classic period full stop. So competly unsung. (So to speak) The world just missed this one from SF. World class all time rock stars all. Thank you guys for all of your music 👍👍👍👍👍
Yep and its a shame that some people dont even know about the Small Faces. Thankfully, i'm not one of them.. love them, especially Steve. He lived his love of music til the end. Ya know he's still gotta be rockin the heavens. There was no stopping him.
yep, they don't come any better than this mate.. Steve Marriott is the man and always will be, too cool for words, just watch and weep tears of joy and sadness... I love Ronnie in this vid too, look at the pair of them... awesome, the whole band... I'm sorry but you can keep yer jaggers and yer richards, these guys are real deal
A reply 5 years late - they're singing live to a pre-recorded backing track (possibly just singing along to the record, as you can hear other vocals poking through). That seemed to be the BBC policy at the time.
Kenny Jones says: "The Small Faces is the best band I was ever in - or were ever likely be in." And he plays with the Who! I'm VERY embarrassed that I knew nothing of this album till last month. Its BRILLIANT - and almost ranks with the best Beatle albums of that era. Magic stuff. They deserve more recognition. Its partly their fault for breaking up after this album. Perhaps "Ogden" is a bit too English for some over here - with all the music hall tunes. But, with English parents and a affection for the homeland, I really like their stuff. They also seem like one of the most fun bands I've ever seen. Steve and Ronnie's songs mean alot to me now. Sorry they had such sad endings. But, in a way, they live on. RIP Ian also.
Colour Me Pop was a British music TV programme broadcast on BBC2 from 1968-1969. If you type title into Yahoo or goggle, you can find out more on this programme.
ScunneredMan It was called Colour Me Pop because it coincided with the introduction of colour TV broadcasting to the UK. It was on BBC2 which for a year was the only channel to broadcast in colour.
sad thing I forgot to add was by the time they got this far the music suits had put the bug in his ear to change the group up a bit. One has to wonder where they could have gone from here if he stayed. Trouble with the SF's was they worked so hard to earn a rep & the suits in the industry sabatoged them every step.Being as young as they were it was prob harder for them at that time to see the bad biz side as clearly til it was too late & happy days toy town just kinda folded up shop, so sad.
For some reason a lot of people seem to think Ronnie Lane is singing lead vocal and playing lead on this one. He isn't, he's singing and playing bass, Steve is playing the lead guitar.
In US whenever an article has appeared in a magazine newspaper internet re Brit'60's music it is consistently same generic Beatles Rolling Stones The Who DC5 Herman's Hermits. Luckily no matter what is written Canadian radio and video tv channels have a good 65% Brit content so new fans can enjoy Small Faces Christie The Move et al. I find these bands had their own distinct sounds less commericalised. And I getnto enjoy evryday on one of our local radio stations plus Vintage TV.
to the person who said this was half live--no isaw the small faces twice and the faces with stewart twice---they were so good you may have thought it was fake
IF only they wouldn’t have been under Don Arden’s control. SF should have been have been huge in the states and make lots of money.I instead they got ripped off by a. Unscrupulous man who took advantage of a bunch of kids
Fantastic! So far as i know there is no other song about a baker( someone who makes bread). I exclude Ma baker, Baker St. etc as these are names. Am I wrong about this? Its been bothering me maybe I should get out more....
Marriott-Lane wrote some great songs. Some duff ones too (fillers on albums) !, but Ogdens Nut Gone Flake was great, probably their only album with no fillers, all the tracks are pretty strong. Miss them
To see and hear Ronnie Lane on lead and Steve Marriot on backing is pure rock and roll - it doesn't get much better than this ! What a performance..
So excellent. I love how Steve Mariott wipes his face in the middle of his solo. Coolest, COOLEST man ever. Would have liked to have seen him live (and alive).
That was pretty cool- and funny. After reading your comment, I backed it up and watched for it. Thanks!
I realise this is a long time since you commented but I had to say that to me in those days were two people whose first names were Steve: McQueem and Marriott
@@tomkilbourn4102 yep and never missed a chord. Steve was so awesomely cool.
All the instruments were mimed playing along to the studio track. The vocal mics were on, however. SM is still the man, of course.
@@TheGreatPresenter And Winwood....
Most under-appreciated band of the 60s.
Absolute stone cold classic up there with Tin Soldier! Hard to believe its so little known.
This and "Tin Soldier" are my two favourite SF tracks

The lyrics are like metaphysical poetry. This is unutterable BLISS!!!!
What a group!! I was 11 in 1968. Remember them very well.
Hot damn! Even backing vocals, Marriot is a monster. I was 4 when this came out. I am obsessed!

I always want to throw something through a window when this song kicks in. Really puts your hackles up. Excellent song.

This and "Tin Soldier" must be some of the 60's greatest pop!
AAAwwwwweeeessssooommmeee. Makes you remember that rock wasn't always a friggin' embarrassment.
MarsHottentot you nailed it brother!
Glorious slice of the Small Faces!
Oh am so happy to read your comment, I agree and I say it all the time - in Rock music there was no one finer and most likely never will be then Marriott and he only played with the best because he WAS the best - there ya have it. Cheers!
Great song ,you can hear the transgression of psycadelia to heavy rock ,great time to be a student ,josscsticks bell bottoms and all that.
the great thing about the small faces is they enjoyed their work and had fun, steve mariott still sadly missed.bernie
Yes, indeed. If I had the time I'd just spend it watching/listening to Small Faces. In fact I think I just might....
Oh yeah. Love the lead by Ronnie Lane. The Small Faces were a band with no weak links; all four of them were giants.
I was so lucky to see the SF and the Who in 1968 at the Sydney Stadium, Australia! Was anyone else there?
I saw the Who another 3 times after that but unfortunately never saw the SF again :(
I would so have loved to have seen the Small Faces. Even after all these years, I'm still obsessed.
my favourite band ever , plonk was the man

Is this live? Doesn't matter....what a muscular, powerful song.
A reply 5 years late - they're singing live to a pre-recorded backing track (possibly just singing along to the record, as you can hear other vocals poking through). That seemed to be the BBC policy at the time.
Great performance. That's all that matters
What a fuckin' kick ass song.......All about baking a loaf of bread!!!!!!!!Awesome.
So good. You cant say that Steve didnt put his all into it.
Awesome band ,absolutely love 'em.
My favourite, finest,kindness song xc
I love stuff like this. The 70s rock that people hold up high started like this.
RIP MAC. Saw him this year at a music festival this year with his band and then having a pint at the bar and nobody knew who he was-SO SAD.
So very much under rated
Wow! Now thats Powerful!
What a band. Brilliant energy. Brilliant performance. If i am right i sure i read that SM didn't think he was that a great on the guitar.
Remember kids. There are but four Small Faces. Tell your teachers.
All or Nothing and Tin Soldier were both brilliant tracks. Great Songwriting by Ronnie Laine and Steve Marriott.👍
Here here and well siad that man.
Absolute Giants...

Great song and a great beat

Around 2 min mark with the bass, really reminds of Hey Joe for some reason. Really great song by the way.
You’re right. Riff matches “Hey Joe”. And the Hendricks song was a hit a few months earlier than “Baker”.

Too Cool for words.

all the instruments are unplugged and their vocal mics are probably at 50%. they're singing along to the studio recording

actually I find none of their stuff so-called duff-no other band comes close with consistent good songs-not even the mighty Beatles or Stones
