Oh thank god it's so easy! I've been looking at some used 981s and they always have the terrible grey tach which is impossible to read and imo looks awful amongst the all black Thankyou
Always great stuff Tommy! If you own a 958 Cayenne it’s a bit different when reinserting the needle. It clicks in regardless of the angle you put it in, just make sure to align it at zero and it will function fine. The cayman and macan seem to only lock in at a specific point.
This was very helpful!!! Was able to fix my tach needle which from the factory was put in wrong. Over time it was moving backwards sitting on 8k 7k then to 3k before I found out how to fix it. Porsche wanted to charge me $6200 to replace it!!!!!!
@@TommyLGarage it was pressed in but I think it was put in wrong to begin with. The needle was well behind the zero at the dealer storage. My salesman sent me the pic when it came in from Stuttgart. I didn’t notice it unfortunately
Tommy just swapped my rpm face but after putting everything back … no power to cluster. Checked the instrument cluster fuse all good. Ideas other than taking it apart again? Checking plugs .. jeez
On the 3rd try, finally got power! Likely one of the plugs wasn’t seated right (I had 2, one like yours and an apple green one in the opposite side). So Relieved! I had to remove the steering wheel as I just didn’t have room to pull the cluster out even on the first try. Pulling out the shroud to get to the 4 screws was a challenge. Found that inserting a finger in between the top of the leather dash and the top of the shroud was the key so I could pull it out. Anyway, appreciate the reply and your video gave me confidence to do this. A couple weeks ago I changed the face of the sports chronograph and matching the tach face was a must. Cheers!!
I found it interesting that you said the mileage is stored in the gauge cluster. Wouldn’t that be one way for crooks to roll back mileage on these cars by buying the gauge from a totaled low miles 981?
I plan to do the same with my Macan GTS. But because I have the Porsche Approved warranty, I only have one question. Is this noted in the control unit if the speedometer is unplugged? I don't want to have any problems with the warranty. Hope you can maybe help me :D
@@TommyLGarage no to worry I worked out how to set it up correctly so it's back to zero...I removed the dial and connected it back turn the key (but not to start the engine) did that twice and put back the dial hand and everything is working right fine now 😀😀😀
I did this on mine with the battery plugged in and everytime I plug the speedo back in the needle moves around like 50% further so it’s completely out of sync. Any ideas?
@@SpicyHatchback do you know if the cayman and macan faces are interchangeable? I’ll have to look in to it, but i will if so. Any chances you have the white needles for the tach and speedo? At minimum i’d grab those from ya
The gauge cluster surround does not come off so easily! I broke mine in half pulling it out! $250 mistake! When pulling it out make sure at the top part to be pulling straight out, not down, not up. I broke 5 clips as well as the top of the surround cracked right in half! URGH!
Nice! But the OCD in me wouldn't put up with your finger prints left after removing the needles, I'd have had to have cleaned them up or covered them first 🤣 A gentle air blaster to remove any other dust or contaminants, too!
I hope you went back in and cleaned up the scuff marks left by your finger nails. Next time, maybe try wearing some cotton gloves in conjunction with the use of an appropriate pry tool for the job (to avoid damage to the overlays). Otherwise, great work in presenting to the community just how easy it can be to modify and maintain our vehicles. Your videos are great, they actually provide a lot of value, so thanks for sharing!
Oh shit I've always wanted to do this but never was brave enough to try. Great job
Now you can! :)
Love your videos ! The way you explaining every small detail to considerate is brilliant .
Thank you very much!
Proper mod, my guy. Keep the P car content coming so it pushes me over the edge even more.
Thanks!! You know you can make me an offer I can’t refuse on this one :)
You can use the plastic fork to remove the needle
Good idea !!

I love that I watch these Cayman videos on how to do stuff to a car I don't even have lol
It’s my personality you’re here for hehe

Thanks for this video! Helped me install a custom guage on my GT4
Happy to help!
Great mod! No need to use latex gloves? My fingers are super greasy due to $&@%# and would be afraid to leave oily prints on the tach/speedo.
My fingers as as dry as a rock :)
@@TommyLGarage but you left a bunch of marks on the spedo, soooo..... lol

I would suggest take it apart. Something must be unplugged

It will throw error messages right away
Is there a way to change the screen to say it GTS instead cayman S ?
It would have to be coded with PIWIS
you inspire me to have a cayman
Make me an offer I can’t refuse :)
Some Porsche content!! 🎉
Nice!
I noticed you didn't clean the smudge (finger oil) on the black face. Tommy, you have a lot of patience to be doing this.
I cleaned it after

As long as you disconnect the battery you’ll be fine
Pretty darn cool! Any chance you’ll be doing something similar on the F80?
Thanks. I doubt it.
Great video Tommy
Thanks!
nice!, looking good Tom!
Thanks 👍
Looks great! its the little things 🔥
It sure is!
Just to double check please, was the TPMS error unrelated to having the battery out? Thanks
Yes unrelated
Thank you
Nice work! Did you try to scan the QR codes to get replacement part numbers? May help anyone planning this mod to avoid buying a full cluster
Great idea!
Looks good
Spasiba!
Just love it bro keep it up!!
Thanks! Will do!
can you tell me if I miss place the dial how do I replace it in the right place?
Push it in and turn left. Wait for resistance. Then remove and put back in the right spot.
@@TommyLGarage sorry when you say turn it left do you mean towards the O? Also where do I put it in at 1,2,3,4? and then turn it left

Hey Tommy! Do you still have your original grey gauge face? I'm actually looking to swap mine from red to grey haha.

Tommy, who are the companies to stay away from? Also, who makes the best white face out there?
I say stay away from all companies. I tried a few and they’re all garbage.

If you bang the screwdriver on a metal pipe you'll make it magnetic.

Without naming brands, what did you NOT like about the aftermarket gauge faces that made them so awful?
Lower quality print, blurry graphics
