WHAT BROKE On My Sleeper's 700HP Turbo LS? *Knock* *knock*

  • Today we tear into the Turbo LS that was making 700HP in my Volvo Sleeper. Yesterday we confirmed that it wasn't anything in the top end, so we had to pull the motor and tear it apart. The answer was disappointing. #TurboLS #Sleeper #RodKnock

Hi Caleb, some points if I may..
    1. You lifted that gearbox with your back - you *will* hurt yourself doing that, lift with your knees!
    2. Take a look at Melling oil pumps - should give you a lot more flow (and by proxy, cooling!)

In January of last year, I hit black ice in my ute and slid into another car in the ditch. I thought to myself while I was perpendicular to road and the back of a Toyota Avalon that this was going to be the death of my Subaru. It blew out my window and smashed up the whole driver's side of the car, but it wasn't totalled. I took my time and redid a lot of body work, and repainted the car a much better color. Now it looks substantial better than it ever did before and It only does it because of the crash. Situations like these can be really frustrating and depressing, but when have that mentality of that it happened for a reason then it can be the start of many great improvements.

It all has to come apart to be cleaned out properly so it was inevitable. Decent cam, new lifters, new timing kit, gap the rings, new gaskets, bearings (check the cam bearings). Pushrods aren't a bad plan either (you may need them depending on the cam you choose). ARP head studs would be a decent investment but failing that the ARP bolt kit is a fair bit cheaper & still a decent upgrade. If you're feeling really fruity a set of used gen 4 rods would be worth chucking in while you're there then you would be set.

Literally me 4 weeks ago pulling the engine out of my RX-7.
No, the apex seals are fine. The clutch pilot bearing disintegrated and the transmission would not go into gear with the engine running. I would just drop the trans, but between wanting to fix oil leaks and the driveshaft being rusted to the differential, it was easier to pull the engine on its own. (For context-ish, you HAVE to pull the motor to change the oil pan gasket on a first gen).
Due to work, its not back together yet, but I finally got the last part I need in the mail.

Dude, get a chop! Although watching vids of you disassembling an LS in your front yard under a tarp is pretty entertaining lol

You can use a engine lift plate for carbureted intakes and bolt it to the Valley pan. I got mine at advance auto parts for $15

Tbh best that you took it out and went through it. Atleast now you'll know what's in it and you now know how to work on it. Always look at the plus when trying to find problems. Just think now you know

Get the Torrin engine hoist from Tractor Supply if you can. It has casters on all wheels. Much better than the Harbor freight one. Also has a handle ;)

You should get a motion race works lift plate, you just take off the valley cover and bolt it on its super handy

You know what the problem is. It’s your fuel map; it’s got a nasty hole. That’s why you were unloading in third. We just need to increase the injector pulse a millisecond and tune the noss timers and you’ll run nines.

Really isn't to intensive of a process. I rebuilt my heads and replaced lifters while leaving the block in my Jeep Comanche. And that's a pretty tight fit in that engine bay too.

12:40 always the last thing you take off😂😂 he wouldn’t find what it was and keep on taking the engine apart when he doesn’t need to!

Idk if you set it before but when ya put it back together it’d be a good time to mark TDC so you can verify the timing in the software 🤘🏼
