Pathological: Most Of Ben Carson’s Life Is A Lie

  • Ben Carson is a guy who’s been getting a lot of media attention because he’s currently polling first among GOP primary candidates. Also, he has a long history of lying that is now coming back to haunt him. His main defense appears to be whining about “gotcha” questions. Cenk Uygur, host of the The Young Turks, breaks it down. Tell us what you think in the comment section below.
"The Wall Street Journal fact-checked another claim in the retired neurosurgeon's 1990 autobiography, "Gifted Hands," and found more evidence of a potentially fabricated story. The Journal's Reid Epstein reported:
"Mr. Carson writes of a Yale psychology professor who told Mr. Carson, then a junior, and the other students in the class-identified by Mr. Carson as Perceptions 301-that their final exam papers had “inadvertently burned,” requiring all 150 students to retake it. The new exam, Mr. Carson recalled in the book, was much tougher. All the students but Mr. Carson walked out.
The professor came toward me. With her was a photographer for the Yale Daily News who paused and snapped my picture,” Mr. Carson wrote. “‘A hoax,’ the teacher said. ‘We wanted to see who was the most honest student in the class.’” Mr. Carson wrote that the professor handed him a $10 bill."
However, The Journal spoke with Yale Librarian Claryn Spies, who said that there was never a class called Perceptions 301 at the school, and a search of YDN turned up no sign of such a picture.
It's another confounding instance of inaccuracies in anecdotes about the life and belief system of Carson.”*

Ben Carson "dreamed one dream about a chemistry book" to the point where he passed an exam that qualified him to be a medical doctor? Rudy Giuliani can't remember a Senator from New York walking with him on 911, the most important day of his political career? Donald Trump claims to be a "brilliant businessman", but the only time he ever really made a lot of money was when Daddy handed him some or he filed for bankruptcy? Is there something somehow wrong about these people and their thinking?

Did Ben Carson enter the race in May, 2015 to promote what I gather is his eleventh book because he could no longer work as a neurosurgeon? He resigned as neurosurgeon in March, 2013, prematurely, given his age. His slow blink, slow speech (in contrast to speeches given years ago) and often closed eyes are characteristic of various neurological disorders. He has bested carnival master Trump in getting into the news every day with truely outlandish statements. He is the first Presidential candidate in history to take 3 weeks off to do a book tour. I wonder if America has become a pawn to the ultimate retirement nest building plan and that Carson has no intention of becoming president.

Carson is the worst liar I have ever seen or heard. His tough guy stories are absolutely unbelievable. He has to close his eyes to shut out the untruths he spurts. I have no doubt he was and remains a studious, quiet nerd, and introvert, a dork, a specialist in medicine, AND THAT'S ALL HE IS.

A single day in Ben's life in last 50 years recounted would be a best seller
He doesnt need to embellish any story and certainly not a stupid one.
Wake up.think big and see the big picture.

I've dated 4 doctors in a row, unintentionally. I guess I just have a knack for attracting arrogant overachievers. The point is, not that it has anything to do with them being docs/med students, they all turned out to be psychos. One after the other was emotionally unstable, needy, stalker, liars. I'm not saying these cases had anything to do with them being doctors. The point is, being a doctor has nothing to do with being superior in any way. Doctors can be crazy losers too. I would go so far as to say that perhaps there is something to do with the aspiration to be a godlike savior of lives which depends on a fractious ego.

  • @tKetcham1

I am the last guy to defend this man, but just after I got out of basic training in 1977, not more than a couple months after I landed in my permanent duty station, my squad leader came to me and told me that I had been given a "full scholarship to West Point". Those are exactly the words he used. If there was something else he should've called it, I do not believe he knew what that more appropriate or more accurate term would have been. He said I was receiving this "college scholarship to West Point" due to my high scores on my military entrance exams.
I was asked to come down to the company command's HQ to discuss the matter with my CO. After his pitch designed to convince me to except this honor, I was given a few days to make my decision.
I had just gotten out of basic training, and the only thing I felt in my heart about the military at that point was that I wanted to do my time and get the hell out. If they're going to offer you West Point and they should give you a few months to decompress from basic training before they throw a nine year commitment at you. That is four years Of West Point and then a five year commitment to the military after graduation as a sort of reciprocation for the free college.
They should also not allow this great honor to be offered by a socially retarded line Captain, who otherwise would never think of speaking to anyone in his command other than his subordinate officers or the senior CEOs in his command. Captain Smith awkwardly attempted to explain to me, an 18-year-old green private, why I should accept this "Scholarship to West Point" and give the next nine years of my life to the military.
His clearly uncomfortable inept explanation was literally the most awkward moments of my entire military experience. Neither one of us wanted that meeting to last any longer than necessary.
My point is, that ever since I turned it down, I have always called it the time I was offered a "West Point scholarship". To be perfectly candid, I did not know enough about it to call it anything else. I did not come from a family that discussed college in anyway and the only way I had heard that anything like free college was referred to, was as a "scholarship".
Of course Ben Carson was surely more sophisticated than I was and he should probably have known the proper terminology. He probably at the very least knows better by now than to call it a "scholarship". But, maybe, like me, that is how he is always refer to it. To change the specificity or accuracy of his reference may have seemed as inconsequential and unnecessary to him, as it does to me even after watching your story.
So we're perfectly clear, this is the only time I will ever be found discussing any point where I am taking the side of Ben Carson. His views In regards to the American people, our country, and the world in general is completely skewed and dangerously warped.

I went to Loma Linda University, an Adventist med school. Carson's reputation has gone much, much farther than his career as a surgeon ever could have. He was in charge of a very famous surgery to separate a set of Egyptian twin sisters conjoined at the head. Once the surgery began, it was blatantly obvious to everyone in attendance that he had not prepared any sort of strategy or plan ahead of time. Shortly into the surgery, they both died. There is a documentary about the sisters, the failed surgery, and their deaths on the internet. He is only shown and mentioned briefly. The documentary is more about the life experiences of the sisters, their hopes for a normal life, and their ultimate demise. But, within the circles of the medical community, he has zero credibility, skills, or even competence.

  • @jayrolf4732

To be fair to Ben, when Cenk says "who calls their book _Gifted Hands_?" Maybe the first person to ever... *ever* successfully separate conjoined twins that were connected at the heads.
I in no way want Ben to be the next President but unprecedented feats in surgery are worthy of boastful behaviors. It's in no way comparative to Cenk calling a book about himself _Gifted Mouth_. Yes, Cenk is the owner of the largest online news site so one could argue "unprecedented" but I beg to differ. Apples and Oranges.
Ben is a liar though which isn't cool... his voice bothers me too.

+Ryan Swanson Ryan, why do you just take Ben at his word that the twins were "successfully" separated? They are both brain damaged from the surgery, according to several reports. One is completely incapacitated. The parents are reportedly very unhappy with the outcome of the surgery. Ryan, I would just say, don't believe anything you see on tv (especially in the political realm) until you verify it.

+Lisa Murphy I've since done a bit of research and yes, both are brain damaged (hardly the fault of Ben and his 70 assistants). My point remains valid although admittedly under researched. Ben led a team of surgeons on the first documented head to head conjoined twins separation where both lived. It wasn't the greatest outcome but an impressive feat none the less considering his use slowing the blood flow in order to minimize them bleeding to death during the operation. A smart move considering an almost impossible procedure. They couldn't reconstruct the skulls sadly.
Do you have a better idea?
Ben and his team tried their hardest, used the best methods and came up short. The parents' unhappiness matters in no way to the attempt and process used.
Ben later tried this on adult conjoined twins and both died. It's a very difficult and almost impossible surgery.

"One of Carson’s disastrous operations involved a 9-year-old girl who was undergoing surgery to remove a brain tumor. Instead of only removing part of the tumor, as he was authorized to do by the girl’s parents, Carson allegedly removed the entire mass, which had been deemed too risky. After the surgery, the girl was left permanently paralyzed on her right side. The parents sued Carson and Johns Hopkins Hospital for medical malpractice in 2010.
Carson allegedly caused a man irreversible brain damage during a procedure to remove a malignant tumor. The man now suffers from deafness, slurred speech and dizziness. According to the man’s attorney, he appears drunk to strangers and cannot carry on a normal life.
Carson has been sued twice for leaving equipment and objects inside of patients. During the surgery of a young girl, Carson allegedly implanted a shunt upside down. In another case, Carson allegedly left a sponge in the brain of a 69-year-old woman, which caused her constant nerve pain."

On the other hand it could all be bullshit, anyways IMO Ben Carson has a very fluid relation with the truth- I think it is a lesson he has learned from religion, and before now his target audience were those who learned to turn off critical thinking and just let beautiful empowering stories flow over them like water over stones. Now he's engaged a different audience and seems outraged that bullshit detectors are going off all over the country.
