  • July 18, 2024...We did the Grinnell Glacier Trail as part of a 3 day visit to Glacier National Park. This is an 11 mile hike that is filled with scenery, beauty and challenges. If you are looking to fill all three on a one hike bucket list in the Glacier National Park area, we believe this is the hike you need to check out!
Grinnell Glacier Trail is like many other trails in the area in that a bit of pre planning is required. There are options to get to the desitnation. One of which includes a boat ride! This is an expense and fills up months in advance. The trailhead for this is small and parking is limited. People do park along the side of the road but depending upon how busy the trail is, you may add mileage to an already long hike. You should keep an eye on trail closures before visiting this trail The many glacier district of the park often has closures due to wildlife frequenting the area. Grinnell Glacier trail is not immune to random closures for bears or mountain lions in the area. Even if it is not closed, you MUST carry bear spray, know the guidelines for a bear encounter and implement these practices to your hike.
There is a considerable amount of vertical hiking to this trail as it increases almost 2,000 ft. from beginning to end. The last 1/4 of a mile is considerable up that will burn the lungs. There are a couple of sections that have thin ledges and steep drop offs that are what I would consider more of a challenge than the vaunted highline trail. You will encounter people on this trail. We also visited Iceberg Lake and my personal opinion was that the trip back from Iceberg Lake was 10 times more annoying with people than Grinnell Glacier. Grinnell has a steady stream of people from beginning to end but we never had to stop for passers by and we also felt like we were isolated enough at the top that we could enjoy the accomplishment. This was not the case with other hikes in Glacier National Park, at least for our experiences.
We felt that Grinell Glacier was a hike that checked all of the boxes. It has amzing sites and views for most all of the hike. It had a physical challenge to it and at times was sketchy enough to get the adrenaline flowing a bit. This is definitely in our opinion a hike not to be missed in Glacier National Park!!

Great Video! We are heading out on Aug 1st. Question - what was the temperature like once you made it up to the lake?

So.. it was overcast and upper 70's to low 80's most of the way and of course not the humidity we are accustomed to in Indiana.haha
As you can see from the video, the glacial lake was still frozen over and I have to believe it will be when you are there too. I should have put in the video or in the description that we were surprised that it was actually a bit chilly when we got to the top. As I said, it was overcast and the wind started blowing off the lake. The wind blowing that cool snowy air around made it a tad uncomfortable. If you plan to stay there a while you might pack a light jacket or wind breaker. We stayed long enough to fool around with goofy pictures and eat a sandwich but were ready to get to warmer climates when we left. Hope this helps! Good luck on your journey. You won't be disappointed going on this hike and maybe you'll see wildlife too!
