    While the German Army only fielded 20 A7V tanks during World War 1, they understood the potential of the tank and started working on different designs in the last year of the war. Some designs like the LKII almost got deployed while the Sturmpanzerwagen Oberschlesien or the Krupp-Protze never left the prototype stage.

    The LK II was later sold to sweden as "Tractors" and got the designation Strv fm/21 which got later developed into the Strv m/21-29 which was basically the same with some minor differences.

      Guessing you're drawing a parallel to the German aircraft production rates in 1944-45? Tens of thousands of planes made, and hardly any qualified pilots to fly them (due to attrition and lack of fuel to train more).

      That's because the Daimlers and Messerschmidts of this world could always count on some fat German high commander doling out a contract in return for some cheap champagne and a night with a Parisian hooker.

      The design was mostly abandoned by 1918 and we wanted to talk about realistic concepts. That a prototype was built doesn't mean much because the of the German lack of coherent strategy.

    The greatest German tank development in WWI was clearly the Tankgewehr. No meander or indecisiveness, they saw the British tanks and immediately went out and developed the anti-tank rifle as fast as possible.

    A beautiful interview on some of the German business, engineering, and military "politicing" that went on; which, brought together the random energies to bring to fruition a exotic piece of military hardware (at least exotic at the time)...and the birth of "the tank" humanity seems to have a romantic point of view about.
    Thanks Indy!

    Excellent video, though I'm surprised there was little to no mention of the massive K-Wagen. A vehicle that dwarfed the A7V, with four 77mm guns and if I remember correctly 7 MG 08s. Two prototypes of this 100+ ton behemoth were nearing completion in November 1918, and the tanks were disassembled were they stood in the factory to comply with the terms dictated by the Allies.

    Certain designs come about naturally. Most ships look the same because hydrodynamics dictates how they work in the water. The Battle field dictated the development of the Tank in existence and into the basic design everyone uses today.

    • @christopherconard2831
      @christopherconard2831 6 років тому +5

      Donald Hill Form follows function. A tool or machine designed to preform certain functions, will have a particular look. The reason tanks look like "tanks" is it a design that works.

    • @donaldhill3823
      @donaldhill3823 6 років тому +4

      That is essentially what I said. Tanks started out to address the Battle field as it was in WW1 on the western front but developed to what we have today because the battle field changed beyond the trench line.

      CR4ZY_K30GH Not to mention during the Russian Civil War, tanks were used but not as much as armoured trains. The Bolsheviks captured many tanks from the White Army and when the Soviet Union was formed, Russia's first tank Corp was founded; they even made their first tank which was a copy of the Renault FT.

    It would be brilliant to see actual examples of these drawing board concepts. Perhaps a training programme for apprentices could recreate these vehicles, just to show the lineage.

    I only know about the LK-II, because it was sold to Sweden to develop the first Stridzvagn prototypes.

    Early enough that the A7V video is not linked in the video. Atcualyl learned about some tanks I didn't know about. I knew oft he LKI and LKII but not the 'next generation' and lorry tank.

    @TheGreatWar What about the K-Wagen? Before WW1 is done you should do a special episode on the Super Heavy Tanks of WW1.

    The Krupp-Protze is a very interesting design, similar to the British Universal Carrier in both the design and the intended application. Shame it never left the prototype stage, as it's a very interesting concept which the Universal Carrier showed had massive potential. At the point of 1917-18, though, it's doubtful that it would have made much of a difference. And who knows, perhaps for the better. The war already lasted much longer than it should have, and caused more misery than anything before.

    What about the K Wagen? If i remember correctly. Two of them were almost ready until the germans surrendered. So i really would've liked to have known if they were a good design.

    So what the Germans needed was their own Colonel Estienne ? Do you think we could get a special "Who did what episode" on the father of the FT17 Indy ?
