While the German Army only fielded 20 A7V tanks during World War 1, they understood the potential of the tank and started working on different designs in the last year of the war. Some designs like the LKII almost got deployed while the Sturmpanzerwagen Oberschlesien or the Krupp-Protze never left the prototype stage.

I showed your series to my history teacher, and every week he plays an episode in class.
HHHHH
The LK II was later sold to sweden as "Tractors" and got the designation Strv fm/21 which got later developed into the Strv m/21-29 which was basically the same with some minor differences.
MultiMedia XL and I was wondering where I had seen that tank cause the design looked awfully familiar
Yes, they have Three in Arsenalen at Strängnäs. One on display and one is undergoing restoration to drivable condition. The third is the one in the movie in Munster. :)
yeah, they recently got the engine running again, there was a cool video of it on their Facebook page
The Chieftain from World of Tanks did a video on them. While WoT itself isn't exactly a bastion of historical accuracy, the Chieftain knows his stuff and his videos are always worth a watch.
thats why I was shure I have seen it before, but could not remember where.
What i love is that both Ralf and Indy really love what they're doing, and it really shows here. It's one of those things that really makes this content so great. Also this is easily my favorite special ever.
Yes you can tell they know and love what they do. Great video.
Let's build 4000 of them, nevermind that no one's left to drive! ...sounds vaguely familiar...
Guessing you're drawing a parallel to the German aircraft production rates in 1944-45? Tens of thousands of planes made, and hardly any qualified pilots to fly them (due to attrition and lack of fuel to train more).
That's because the Daimlers and Messerschmidts of this world could always count on some fat German high commander doling out a contract in return for some cheap champagne and a night with a Parisian hooker.
It was good business, probably why I'm driving a Mercedes in 2018 😄
well not when you bail and leave your crew to die ;)
google heinkle 162 for the ww2 version
That is actually really sad, almost heartbraking to think about. 😕
"The first idea was simplicity".
How very un-German of them.
Indy! You missed the K-Wagen! The mightiest of WW1 tanks that actually got (mostly) built!
The design was mostly abandoned by 1918 and we wanted to talk about realistic concepts. That a prototype was built doesn't mean much because the of the German lack of coherent strategy.
German company:
builds a tank.
Departement 1:
What are we suposet to do with it?
Departement 2:
Now this looks like a tank for me!
Just like with David Willey, it's an absolute pleasure to listen to Ralf talking about tanks. These gentlemen have so much passion, energy and knowledge in their field. Amazing job!
It seems Ralf really loves his work, same as Indy. That's why this is a superb content. By the way, that green color on the tank isn't the same of Germany fusball team away uniform?
No,it isnt 😂. But perhaps they should wear uniforms in that camouflage scheme to impress s/o 😉
The greatest German tank development in WWI was clearly the Tankgewehr. No meander or indecisiveness, they saw the British tanks and immediately went out and developed the anti-tank rifle as fast as possible.
ltflak It wasn't completely effective,though
@Ciprian Parvu If you had to choose between confronting a tank with your rifle, or confronting a tank with a Tankgewehr, what would be your choice?
ltflak you forget that anti tank grenades also existed
@Ciprian Parvu You forget that British tanks had roofs that bounced those grenades off.
Also, what would you rather do? Get up close with the tank to throw an explosive at it, or shoot at it with an anti-tank rifle from the distance of a few hundred yeards?
More of this lovely german guy, please :D
there will be one more episode next Saturday
Perhaps he could sing like falco
@@zzyzxzee6374F Falco was Austrian!
@@franzvonwien424Always those Austrians🙄
I didn't realise how many British tanks were captured compared to the 20 A7v's !
Too bad they never made a replica for the großkampfwagen (k-wagen) that would be awsome to see and learn about.
Two genuine professionals at work. Absolutely loved this episode of The Great War.
A beautiful interview on some of the German business, engineering, and military "politicing" that went on; which, brought together the random energies to bring to fruition a exotic piece of military hardware (at least exotic at the time)...and the birth of "the tank" humanity seems to have a romantic point of view about.
Thanks Indy!
Aaron Wilson And it's also an interesting contrast with the British approach with the Landships Committee and the tank corps.
Excellent video, though I'm surprised there was little to no mention of the massive K-Wagen. A vehicle that dwarfed the A7V, with four 77mm guns and if I remember correctly 7 MG 08s. Two prototypes of this 100+ ton behemoth were nearing completion in November 1918, and the tanks were disassembled were they stood in the factory to comply with the terms dictated by the Allies.
Just saw the channel reply to another comment like this saying "soon". Now I'm all excited
much respect for you actively looking for an answer in other comments. Not many people do that and it would make a community manager's work a lot easier.
Hahaha I'm sure it would! Thank you for the response anyway :)
Certain designs come about naturally. Most ships look the same because hydrodynamics dictates how they work in the water. The Battle field dictated the development of the Tank in existence and into the basic design everyone uses today.
Donald Hill Form follows function. A tool or machine designed to preform certain functions, will have a particular look. The reason tanks look like "tanks" is it a design that works.
That is essentially what I said. Tanks started out to address the Battle field as it was in WW1 on the western front but developed to what we have today because the battle field changed beyond the trench line.
The LK2 is my favorite tank also the same thing with the mark a whippet and this video was great
Oberschleisen, also called "discount Panzer III".
"It would be beast of burden for the stormtroopers." that must be one of the most badass sounding sentence in existence. :-)
Awesome episode!
Splendid and jolly good work
I like the look of the LK2. The camouflage looks neat aswell.
Wow. What a fantastic source of information. You guys are the best.
love the museum trips, especially when there is a knowledgeable, enthusiastic curator!
Awesome! Thanks guys!
So much I didn't know... Thank you! 🙂
Excellent video, I was not aware of this tank. Amazing how future tankers and designers pretty much had the same ideas
This tank proto should be in bf1
I wonder what it would've been life if these German tanks had been sent to the battlefield had the war lasted into 1919. We'll always wonder "What If" on that. Great job.
Amazing video!
Number 50? Wow! I'm paying attention to history at last!
Maybe, just maybe, I'll learn from its mistakes! Thanks, George!
I love this show 😆. Greets from Flanders
I was in a tank once. It was small, and couldn't go anywhere though. I believe they call it a "drunk" tank.
ba dm ts!
you were more pissed than a wino's mattress
Kurt, I don't think that's possible, but challenge accepted!
Bloody Brilliant!
Love this series!!
LOVE THE ENDING! :)
1:54 soldiers of the New Zealand Division and Whippet tanks advancing through Maillet Mailly 26 March 1918
look at them!
2 people who had the same passion!
its nice to live in a world, where for the most time, is peace and european can visit each other
Actually been to Munster Panzer Museum when I was a kid. :D
Most informative brillant
Oh well, they forgot to put the box up, Indy!
Any chance you do videos about the tanks of other countries like France or Russia
hoping for France later this year
Great =) If you have the opportunity go to the Saumur museum ; they have working Schneider, St Chamond and FT tanks.
Would be cool to see you driving around one of those XD.
The Russians didn't have tanks at that time only borrowed Mark IV tanks
Totally agree! France is the obvious next choice. Russia is very interesting: lots of "creative" and often totally mad ideas, some of which were actually constructed (e.g. the CZAR tank).
CR4ZY_K30GH Not to mention during the Russian Civil War, tanks were used but not as much as armoured trains. The Bolsheviks captured many tanks from the White Army and when the Soviet Union was formed, Russia's first tank Corp was founded; they even made their first tank which was a copy of the Renault FT.
I hope you guys visit the tank museum in France to learn about the French Renault tanks!
Ralf look's like a James Bond henchman
excellent!!
You should do a second series on ww2 I would be into that
I love the advertisements I get for videos from this channel.
Can we have Ralf narrate everything ever? I’d listen to the weather report if he said it!
Awesome show!
Will you make an episode on the enormous Russian tricycle (I forget the name) tank?
A question for the Great War: was gas ever used during the Gallipoli campaign? I need it for a school project I’m doing on the Gallipoli campaign
Fascinating !
What about the K-Wagen, Germany during WW1 wanted to build a giant heavy tank that would litterally be called a landship. It would be interesting to see you do a video on that tank as well. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/K-Wagen
If you feature my comment in the future my name is Chandler.
soon
They're working on something... a weapon to surpass the A7V...
What will you do after you complete this series.... it’s 2018 and the war is almost over 😣
Zak.openmuslim They allready announced it. It's called history ghosts or Something Like that
No spoilers please!
I loved this guy in greatest tank battles as well
Can u do a video about strangest prototypes and plans for vehicles like the tsar tank
AWESOME!
Wow very beautiful. I love your wideos
Shame we didn't get to see the inside of the tank, but still very fascinating to learn about this tank and the other tank ideas
you might want to look at The Chieftain, Inside the Hatch. He's doing an episode in the Swedish tank Museum about the Stridsvagn 21, which is actually a slight bit modernised LK II..
Audy Hack Thank you, I’ll make sure to check it out!
You guys should have a look at the training trenches at RAF Halton
For some reason this video feels more stretched out than normal, like it's in a cinema where everything is wider.
Also, how close to the other one was this shot?
Now that's nice whippet clone lol ! I'm building the captured mk4 from Leipzing freikorps service in same paint scheme!
Ralf rockt!
Is that the historian who was featured in “Greatest Tank Battles” on the military or history channel?
Brilliant
Cool, we should see more experimental tanks
Is there something wrong with me? I would be happy if the war was 2 years longer. For 2 reasons:
1:I would want to see what happened if the german tank seen action
2:The series would be longer.
Check their other channel, their preparing for a ww2 show
Akos Gergely I am absolutely positively sure no one there said the same 😂
Isaac, you're wrong. Check the episode on Jack Churchill. He was pissed when he learned that Armistice had been signed “If it wasn’t for those damn Yanks, we could have kept the war going another 10 years!”
Rodrigo Basoalto C. I follow the other channel too
Rodrigo Basoalto C. What is the name of the other channel?
Love it!!!!!!!!
Nice
It would be brilliant to see actual examples of these drawing board concepts. Perhaps a training programme for apprentices could recreate these vehicles, just to show the lineage.
I only know about the LK-II, because it was sold to Sweden to develop the first Stridzvagn prototypes.
yeees, this is good. Call a man who know everything about it and talk with him
Make this man a regular!!
Tanks are awesome
The presenter looks like Gene Wilder...anyway, this expert being interviewed is amazing. Great video :)
Early enough that the A7V video is not linked in the video. Atcualyl learned about some tanks I didn't know about. I knew oft he LKI and LKII but not the 'next generation' and lorry tank.
Did you realise that you are about to reach 1 million subscribers??? Congratssss
still 170k left?
The Great War 171,549 to be precise. Long long journey. I was here when you had around 100,000 subscribers. Congrats again
@TheGreatWar What about the K-Wagen? Before WW1 is done you should do a special episode on the Super Heavy Tanks of WW1.
We love Ralf
@thegreatwar #thegreatwar hey Indy and crew I don’t know if any exist, but it would be awesome if you could find and tour a German U-boat from the First World War. Keep up the great work.
If you close your eyes its Dr Strangelove giving you the tour
Pls do a spesial about the lost battalion!!!!
Cool
I'm surprised he didnt mention the Super Heavy K Wagen Tank
The A7V is not in the box to the left...there is no box. Forgot about that?
No matter, great episode as usual :)
"Lets move nimbly on the battlefield and don't get hit." Pretty much sums up warfare. XD
Tank you for Danke Tank No 2
He mentions the A7V in Australia but not that the LK II in the museum is the Swedish variant the Strv m/21-29......
Interesting
Hello Indy and gang:
Will there be a Channel about wwII?
The Krupp-Protze is a very interesting design, similar to the British Universal Carrier in both the design and the intended application. Shame it never left the prototype stage, as it's a very interesting concept which the Universal Carrier showed had massive potential. At the point of 1917-18, though, it's doubtful that it would have made much of a difference. And who knows, perhaps for the better. The war already lasted much longer than it should have, and caused more misery than anything before.
Since the Summer of 2018 the Swedish tank museum Arsenalen has one LK II in running order.
Did not know that they wanted to build a tank in my city in WW1 :)
LK2, aka tank that looks like Crossover between Rolls Roys, with the FT tank.
The LK2 looks like a whippet crossed with the...i JUST got to the part where he says that. Damn it. I'm late.
Indy rocking that new belly!
my bad :( i blame it on this old crappy laptop!
So wait, What was the heavy tank they planned on building in 1919? Was iot more A7s, copies of the Mark tank, or the Silesia tank?
Build 4000 Indy Neidells, that’s useful ;-)
What about the K Wagen? If i remember correctly. Two of them were almost ready until the germans surrendered. So i really would've liked to have known if they were a good design.
So what the Germans needed was their own Colonel Estienne ? Do you think we could get a special "Who did what episode" on the father of the FT17 Indy ?
