Charlie, thank you for being honest. I can’t think of anything more terrifying than jumping from an airplane, but then when you couple that with knowing you’re jumping right into the fire…that’s a completely different level of fear. I have so much respect for those veterans that made the ultimate sacrifice. Thank you. Thank you ALL.
School isn't what taught me about D-day.....3 things did. Medal of Honor, The original call of duty and The swedish Band sabaton! I also would not have learned of operation husky if it wasn't for the old Call of duty games on PS2 which was another operation that featured C47 Douglas Skytrains/Dakotas. Amazing history. As a historian, if we didn't fight so hard as we did back then, who knows we could have been in the world of what the Man in the High castle is in the series.... Its not everyday you get to meet a vet and ACTUALLY get them to talk about their past experiences.....
The real history of WW2 from the US disgusting "robber barons" who funded Hitler and the attempt for a coup in 1934 against FDR which General Smedley Butler exposed in 1934 to the possible escape of Hitler, in a book written by a Submarine veteran Harry Cooper. So many lies persist to this day about our recent history. (See the drama documentary Grey-Wolf)
At least they mentioned those D-Day airborne jumped with heavy equipment, at night, and under fire. It is interesting how those who jumped on D-Day did face painting like Native Americans (or Indians as back in those days) with intent to scare the Germans that they are now facing Cheyenne Braves and other fierce warriors from various tribes. It was written Airborne had no problem getting soldiers to sign up for parachute battalions. One there is an increase in pay, two the slogan was "all our men are tough and we accept only those who are tough." So a lot of young guys say, "yeah! I wanna be tough!" But I think the parachute jump was the easy part. It is what these guys had to do once on the ground. For many way off intended DZ, lost equipment during canopy shock, and no modern technology such as NVG and GPS.
@@grytestriped4840 You mean to say you dont care about all these "freedoms" we have from guys fighting their own brethren over 80 years ago? But but but muh freedoms!

Wars always change and the scale of the D-Day invasion will never be seen again. Sadly, the loss of life in a modern all-out war would be gigantic. The weapons we invented to bring an end to WWII are now too horrible to even imagine.
I had the opportunity to jump out of the DC 47 during my time with the 82nd Airborne Division. It was called fun jump or SGM jump and only on a Saturday. We used the National Forest Service's DC 47 plane

It’s a shame what we allowed this country to turn into. Their sacrifice was ultimately for a country that today, is unrecognizable to the America that they fought for. What a disgrace.
The people who made so much sacrifices to shape the world to be a better place. Thank you!
The people who fought so we wouldn’t be speaking German just to end up in a country where the common language is now Spanish.
WWII the last legal war declared by Congress. Im not sure about the Korean war?
The people who fought so hard to preserve "freedom" would say we fought the wrong enemy if they saw what is going on today

Rest in eternal peace. Thank you is not enough. 🇺🇸🇺🇸🙏🙏😥
Excellent footage, Charlie D'Agata, you are helping all of us "across the pond" to experience what all of the D-Day participants went through!
Truly the Greatest Generation.
for sure. they were incredible.
Charlie is the best guy for this story. He is always so sincere. Thank you Charlie.
What a great opportunity! This is great Television! Charlie D'Agata and his team delivered a great segment. Glad that your knees were up to the task!

Yes, and let us remember those brave pilots who flew the C-47 Dakotas despite the unbelievable flak they faced.
Yes, while a huge blunder of missing planned DZs, the random scattering made no sense for Germans to figure out location objectives.

Nice to see our current airborne guys taking part. In 'Nam we had few who actually jumped or took the training. Almost all was helicopter assault.

Yes you need restricted airflow through the canopy to allow proper expansion, if not a gust would collapse the canopy pretty quickly
