Hats off to anyone trying to brighten up their place using their imagination and what they have to work with. Another example of someone adding colorful sprinkles on the great cupcake of life.
The negative comments make me laugh. I appreciate you doing something a little different, and even when I don’t always love modern art, this was really fascinating. Well done.
I am not going to lie, I audibly gasped at the pink car and bike coming out of the ground at the end there. Holy crap, that spoke to me. Like some kind of missing link between the primordial ooze and modern day Detriot. It is beautiful. Thanks for sharing, Jacob. It is nice to see people pushing beauty into harsh reality. They are the little flowers reaching up from the concrete sidewalk of life. Really cool.
That’s my home town, I love the art work and expressions at the Heidelberg Project. There were so many more homes and it was once said that when the city told Tyree to take it all down and dismantle it. So I heard he made an announcement he was going to comply and slowly started removing things. However, there was a rumor back in 2009 or 2010 that some hired thugs were sent in there to burn the houses down to get rid of the project quicker and I think the last one burned about 6 or so years ago. Now rather that is true or no about the hired arsonists, I do not know it could be all malarkey. All I do know is that there is so much missing from there, it’s not even half the size it was. Wow, you are lucky you got to meet him, He is a local folk hero I hope I get a chance to meet him! Thanks for sharing Bagger!
Oh' so you are partial to South Western funk art. I assure you, there was a very good eye arranging these pieces of human waste...oops, now I'm talking about Bay Area art:/
Looks like a lot of stuff that Goodwill and Salvation army was unable to sell. But very cool that it is still being worked on, and giving some people a sense of Hope and Positivity. 1 Mans trash is someone else's treasure. Be safe in your travels
An awesome place ! To bad some folks don't get it. There are messages behind it all. I however think a few shots you showed was where they keep their art supplies. This place is known around the world.
I appreciate you hitting these offbeat locations, a record of them needs to be preserved! This kind of art is transient; able to exist in the countryside or our abandoned cities only for as long as that place is considered valueless by the nearby community. Like so much "Outsider Art" (made by untrained artists) there is so much personal expression and commentary on society. While the comments on society are often less well thought out than a high school graduation speech, it does effectively hold up a mirror. Uncomfortable, society reacts it often does and says it's just junk, not art. In the case of The Heidelberg Project, it's both. Take a look at some of the urban exploration of Detroit, it's beauty become junk. This, for the all the eye of the beholder talk, is one man's effort to make beauty from that junk.
Wondering what happens to all the soft materials (stuffed animals, shoes, etc.) when it rains or snows. Would seem to be a health hazard if mold would take over.
Everyone here getting pissed because it just looks like garbage to them...you've never been to the neighborhoods of Detroit, have you? Some of them have cleaned up a bit. Others look like Chernobyl, with the burnt remains of buildings lying in plots, shattered windows, trap houses, literal garbage cluttering the roads, needles, packs of feral dogs...it's sad. The Heidelberg Project takes all of that and tries its damnedest to do something positive with it, since city officials won't. There's a LOT of context here that people who have never visited Detroit are missing. Until you're brave enough to see my city yourselves, don't judge a project meant to act as a sort of catharsis for the people living here. And thanks for drawing attention to it, good sir.
I've read about this place on line but never thought I'd see it like this, thanks Jacob! While some might call it garbage I have to say it does appear to have some aspects of art, and for those people who wish to call it junk so be it. If it is junk well it's well organized and categorized. I kind of like it, have to wonder what this area would look like if this stuff wasn't there--more decay in Detroit!
I'm originally from Detroit and have never seen nor heard of this part of town. I haven't been back there since 1999, so I'm not sure if this place is good or bad for the city. It's truly sad what happened to Detroit. Both of the houses I grew up in have been torn down and the neighborhoods I barely recognize any more.
I’m in hospital the phone work. So 6 days I got watch the camp fire I had my toe cut off but I had something to look forward to I hope to see Ann in the video thanks to take my mind off bad things
I see a lot of comments about how it looks trashy, and while I don't disagree, I still think this is an interesting idea and would love to go see it in person. Detroit is only an hour from me but I refuse to set foot in it after I got jumped
I always feel that I have to wait for the very end if the video. Because if I don't hear "this one's in the bag" its not a real TCB video! Lol! Great video!
Kind of on the fence with this one. Crosses the line a little between art and just trash! Some of it was rather clever and then much of it just appeared to be paint and an attempt to organize others garbage and destruction . It made me feel sad and the surrounding home owners would likely profit if the city were to take it down. If it were private property and better maintained I'd be all for it . I love self-expression, but much of this doesn't make sense and is very depressing. Loved that other house though. Well done and clever. Bright, cheery and well maintained!
It's not awesome, it's actually incredibly sad and the deep meaning of all this "art" is a reminder of how quickly you and your children can have everything; a home, a job and all that you need to be happy and suddenly there is no more money and you're forced to leave everything you knew and loved behind because it was too much to take with you.
Jacob, Awesome work! Very interesting place, but a Fine line between interesting and “concerning”. Would hate to be in charge of weedeating. Haha! Do all those stuffed animals stay rain-logged? ...eew.
The project was originally an attempt to bring attention to the problems of urban blight and the issue of unscrupulous contractors using the neighborhoods as thier dumping grounds. The urban renewal and video vigilantes working with police to catch the illegal dumpers are steadily helping to get these issues under control. The Hidelburg project is more of a curious tourist attraction these days, for the time being it does not appear that the area is on anyone's radar in the City, probably because there are bigger fish to fry. Only time will tell what ultimately becomes of it.
Please do not call Tyree Guyton a ‘folk artist’. Folk artists are untrained . Guyton graduated from Center for Creative Studies and taught at Wayne State University. He is an installation artist that knows what he is doing.
Visit pittsburgh's North Side and meet. Randy at Randyland. He bought a dilapidated property in 1995 on acredit card for $10,000- which he didn't have- but manage to revitalize an entire neighbor into a gorgeous neighborhood of half million dollar homes.. People from over 50 countries have visited so far. She has the most painted house in the world
Jacob I live in berkley a city next to det. just off 8mile love to take you out for dinner you and your whole family could meet in Greek town let me know
Don't like this kind of waste. Most of the stuff can be given to people who don't have much. All those toys wasted when some child could benefit... Love ya vid Jacob xx
It is a fine line between garbage and Art sometimes. And that Line is different for everyone.
Very well put
Yes
Kudos for his effort!@@

NCPATRIOT well said.

I know art is in the eye of the beholder, but I saw more art in Slab city
Thank you for showing us this
Oh' so you are partial to South Western funk art. I assure you, there was a very good eye arranging these pieces of human waste...oops, now I'm talking about Bay Area art:/
I typed one snarky reply after another only to delete them all.
I think a flash flood has a better eye than here
yes that's the best "say something nice" I could muster
My personal favorite art pieces there were the ones that were the most basic - Congo the Art Dog's Doghouse, and the little theater.
Looks like a lot of stuff that Goodwill and Salvation army was unable to sell. But very cool that it is still being worked on, and giving some people a sense of Hope and Positivity. 1 Mans trash is someone else's treasure. Be safe in your travels
Interesting. But whatever floats your boat!! Thanks Jacob!!

Time is a flat circle......
That's deep.
time is for squares man

That's interesting! Has to be one of the craziest neighborhoods I've ever seen. Would love to know more about the lone artist there.
Wondering what happens to all the soft materials (stuffed animals, shoes, etc.) when it rains or snows. Would seem to be a health hazard if mold would take over.

Awesome video Jacob. Keep it going. Love you.
Tyree is a DIY Killa!🙌🎨

I always wished we could have seen these abandoned places when it was full of life and people. Love your vlogs, Jacob!
I think that is a great idea. Too bad that the fire is happening in so many places. Thank you TCB

I don’t see what the problem is; that’s a pretty cool neighbourhood...
Thanks!!. I thought you would like it, too!!!
I’m in hospital the phone work. So 6 days I got watch the camp fire I had my toe cut off but I had something to look forward to I hope to see Ann in the video thanks to take my mind off bad things
Is that the chlordiazepoxide injection talkin'?
Hope you feel better
Great segment ... well covered!!! Thank you for sharing this amazing inner city artsy neighborhood ...
I see a lot of comments about how it looks trashy, and while I don't disagree, I still think this is an interesting idea and would love to go see it in person. Detroit is only an hour from me but I refuse to set foot in it after I got jumped

Awesome! Glad you covered this ❤
Ahhh! I visited yesterday and was wondering if you'd ever been!
Awesome of you Jacob. Ty
This is amazing!
If you are ever on houston you should check out the beer can house, the orange show, and project row houses
I'm with the city on this one

Another thing in my great state I had no idea existed.
Interesting concept great video

Good to see you, Carpetbagger...🌝🌝🌝
Jacob, Awesome work! Very interesting place, but a Fine line between interesting and “concerning”. Would hate to be in charge of weedeating. Haha! Do all those stuffed animals stay rain-logged? ...eew.
Love it, looks like a bomb site but still love it 😊
That's one way to keep people from moving in and rebuilding
Anybody else that had that little castle at 2:29 when they were a kid? _(To the left of the orange ball)_
Ahhhh...I used to live in Detroit!
Ecenntric but fun!
I stayed in that neighborhood
It's interesting.

The bullshit about life is that everyone is different.
Looks like a bunch of junk tbh
Go to The Henry Ford Museum & Greenfield Village 👍
That looks like a bad horror flick.
Nicest part of Detroit. Was that a buried Hummer?
Awesome place 👍
Welcome to my hometown visit the Blue Water Bridge
Interesting. Keep Safe ❤Keep Well ❤
Visit Randyland on Pittsburg
That was interesting
What's a carpetbagger? I've heard the term before but dunno what it means. Could anyone enlighten me perchance?
Even the people in Detroit don't like this place and keep setting the houses on fire
Gives me strange vibes.
cool
A lot of this stuff is really cool, but with the dolls and statues and stuff, i wouldn't want to be there at night (even if it wasnt in Detroit)
Dude, this be the Most Bizarre place. I Do S👀 the thou in it!
Wow
Hey Carpetbagger!
Hey man!!

Time is for squares man.

I certainly don’t use the term as an insult
Go to wonders of wild life
Kool CB ☆☆☆☆
A couple of the homes burned a few years back due to arson
I'm sorry, I appreciate creativity and all, but to me that place is a blight, I'm with the city!
Do you live in Detroit?
An urban version of East Jesus.
Overall nice but one pam e just looks like trashy everywhere
Boy that guy doesn't want to be associated with the heidelberg project after all he was making art in that pink house 28 years ago lol.
Detroit looks like a Fallout game
far out, man
Anywhere else the neighbors would complain to the city about the eyesore. But in Detroit...

They DO complain. That's why the fires happened.
Anyone want to come to the yard sale of destitution and hopelessness???
Jacob I live in berkley a city next to det. just off 8mile love to take you out for dinner you and your whole family could meet in Greek town let me know
Looks more like an episode of Hoarders than art... but I don't know art
Nice video, sort of looks interesting, but a little trashy also...
Well that was... interesting? 🤔
4th !!!! Good morning 😃
Don't like this kind of waste. Most of the stuff can be given to people who don't have much. All those toys wasted when some child could benefit... Love ya vid Jacob xx
You can never go home again....
This is the part of “art” I really don’t understand. It’s more trash than treasure.
No one knows what time it really is because when the clock was invented they had no idea what time to set it to. :) :P
🤘🤘⚘
Oops* ART
Santa's Village azoosment Park Dundee I'll.
Truly sad.
First
Edit: also #notificationsquad
Not feeling the"art" on this one. I still think it would be fun to see though.
Eh, just a bunch of junk!...pt.2 ☺
