    Top Gun: Maverick: Is It Realistic?
    Top Gun is an iconic aviation film among movie fans and stunt pilots alike. But just how much of the film was realistic, and what parts of the movie are things pilots only dream about?

    Shot down Pilots getting on to an Enemy Airbase in time of war and trying to steal an aircraft to escape??? Actually been attempted three times to my Knowledge during WWII and all three of them made it on to film in some form!!!
    1. Oberleutnant Franz von Werra, a LUftwaffe Me-109 pilot was shot down over the UK during the Battle of Britain. Escaped from a POW camp and got onto an RAF Airfield. He was caught in the Cockpit of a Hawker Hurricane while trying to start it. He later escaped from a POW camp in Canada and managed to get into the USA before they entered WWII and managed to get back to Germany. The British made a film about him in 1957 called "The one that got away"
    2. Leutnant Heinz Schnabel and Oberleutnant Harry Wappler were German Luftwaffe bomber pilots also shot down over the UK during the Battle of Britain. in late 1941, both escaped from a POW camp in Cumbria, managed to get on to a RAF Training airfield and stole a Miles Magister trainer. Had the weather to the west not been bad, they would have flown to Neutral Ireland and got away. However they flew down to Norfolk with the intent to cross the North Sea over to Holland, only to find that they were running out of fuel and had to land 5 miles inland. Their attempts to get some more fuel saw them get recaptured.
    3. Two RAF Pilots, Flight Lieutenant Walter Morison and Flight Lieutenant Lorne Welch escaped from the Infamous Stalag Luft III POW camp in Germany in June 1943 dressed as Luftwaffe Ground Crew. They managed to get on to a Luftwaffe airfield and made two attempts to steal a Luftwaffe aircraft (with them hiding on the base over night between the two attempts!!)The first they aborted after the real crew turned up and in the second, they were recaptured while trying to start the thing. They both ended up in Colditz. Both this and the story above were combined into one of the escapes shown in the Film "The Great Escape" that was a fictional account of the mass breakout from Stalag Luft III which happened in March 1944.
    The main problem for all of these attempts were the pilots didn't know the aircraft that they were trying to steal, so they didn't know how to start them. Not a problem that Maverick would have on this film, like the a number of ground crew who stole aircraft in the 1950's, 60's and 80's (One RAF Aircraftsman (crashed it) One Dutch Airman (forced landing), One USAF Sgt (Crashed it) , One USMC Cpl (flew a circuit and landed it).

    1:04 - the script for the movie was first written in 2012, then rewritten after tony scott’s death later on in 2016 with the technical advisory help of navy top gun instructors, notably the guy featured in this video. Back in that period the F35C wasn’t operational in the USN. The movie was shot in 2018, and only released this year, but if you imagine the events actually taking place before 2020 it all makes sense (except that even last decade I’m pretty sure that the USAF would have been involved to at least provide ‘top cover’ via a long range flight of F22s if it was suspected that the strike team may encounter SU-57s).

    "Top Gun" has been a tradition since the Navy Fighter Weapon School started, no matter what branch or job held. I was in the FDC for an artillery unit in the army and we conducted our own "tests" within the post/division for "top gun" (for the cannon crew) and top FDC (for us). A tradition that is never going to go away. Side note: we won top FDC every time.

    Navy/USMC pilots are some of the most competent people I've ever met - definitely not that many walking talking egos. More like strong minded, decisive nerds who just happen to be able to bench 300lb. Most were highly intelligent and considerate individuals, very good leaders. The assholes were rare (they did exist) and did stand out as exceptions - they were also not around long.

Ironically and probably inline with the movie, Iran is actively pursuing nuclear weapons of which the West does not agree with. The storyline, however implausible, is not illogical nor impossible. just a couple of things, I doubt anyone could survive a mach 10 ejection., and no mater how many friends you have you would never fly again if you take an unauthorized flight. The Navy does not tolerate rule breakers, especially at the top levels, or really anyone that risks equipment. But it was a good movie I saw it 2 times.

    • @rodanderson8490
      @rodanderson8490 2 роки тому +1

      The movie does not claim that Maverick ejected at Mach 10+, only that the engines overheated and self-destructed. I would imagine that Maverick rode the plane down to a MUCH slower and lower position before ejecting. The plane could even have had an ejection capsule for the pilot like the F-111. If the plane had not been destroyed, it could have been checked after landing to prove there was nothing wrong with the radio. The test flight was approved when Maverick took off but the admiral had ordered him by radio to abort the test and return to base. Regardless, a piloted mach-10+ R&D aircraft would have belonged to the US Air Force - NOT Navy. The idea is stupid.

    1. GPS jamming is the reason that they can't use F-35? Not plausible: First, F-35 can still drop laser or other method guided projectiles; secondly, if GPS jamming is so effective, the US won't be able to use most of its modern precision guided arsenal against any stronger nations
    So, if GPS jamming is a false excuse, US can actually bomb the factory by cruise missiles, dropped by stealth planes e.g F-35 or B-2
    Even for some unexplainable reason they really can't use GPS guided missiles for this mission, why not using cruise missiles which used terrain following guidance? Just need to ask LM restore the capability for certain units.
    But back to first, I don't believe at all GPS jamming is so effective that US won't be able to use GPS guided weapons, otherwise US won't have almost all surface strike projectiles guided by mainly GPS
    2. The air defense setup is ridiculous, highly guarded by S-125 Neva (SA-3), which is even elder than F-14? Paramount should make this part more plausible by putting some S-300 or S-400 in the valley, with 9K33 Osa (SA-8) for short range protection
    3. There is absolutely no emergency to bomb an enrichment factory, which takes years to produce enough weapon grade U235 for a nuke warhead, and you don't really need to bomb the factory, just take out its electricity while in operation is even more effective than bomb the factory and much easier. Claiming "not to pollute the area" is the reason to bomb the factory before its operation is super ridiculous, US military never cares about "collateral damage" especially about environment, so many nuke tests in Pacific Ocean, so much agent orange dumped in Vietnamn, so many depleted Uranium shells all over the world (from M-1 main gun).....

      I think the reason for using the f-18's and I could be wrong here is that, this was possibly a covert mission. Would have been easier to point out the USA was to blame for attacking that bunker if they used a missile from afar. And possibly for the F-35's not being used, maybe it would have been too obvious as to who attacked their stronghold.

      Making the move as realistic as possible if actually a big deal. There are millions of people who are knowledgeable about military and aircraft and they appreciate when things are done well and accurate. Just Bc you are not knowledgeable about any of it doesn’t mean others are the same. If they did it like so many other movies that don’t care about details then you lose the interest of a big chunk of the audience. You sound pretty ignorant

    What I want to know is if Russian 5th generation fighters outclass a F-18 as much as the movie shows and if that flying close to the ground scene really screws with targeting. I know F-35's dramatically outclass F-15's, but our fighter tech is best in the world. I would like to see some science showing the ground messing up targeting.

    • @richardvernon317
      @richardvernon317 2 роки тому +4

      Goggle Multipath Reflection or Multipath propagation. Radar or Laser beam hits target aircraft and is reflected. Aircraft is not a perfect reflector. Some energy is reflected back to the emitter, but most of it is not. If the photons reflected off the target (at low level) outside of the field of view of the sensors on the emitter hit something like water they can be reflected again into the sensor's field of view. The sensor will now see multiple target returns due to the same energy its looking for coming into it from different angles at almost the same range. IR heat off the engines will do the same thing. A Radar Guided Missile I worked on suffered from this very problem. Over Land it was capable of shooting down targets down to 200 feet AGL no problem. Fire it at a low level target over a clam sea and 9 times out of ten, the missile would lock on to the target's reflection off the sea and the missile would dive into the sea in front of the target.
