  • The video builds a three dimensional color cube that combines RGB HSV and CMYK color space into an object you can hold in your hand.
Artists think about color differently than technical people. I'm no artist, I'm analytical and think about color as numbers and the math used in their display. That's a horrible way to describe the vivid evocative continuous spectrum that fills a rainbow. You have to SEE color, you have to experience it with your senses. Artist deal with this all the time, how to convey the idea or emotion through an object. I saw a video about artist Sam Gilliam who saw the new exciting color pallet of the 1960's and 70's, and created a new art form. He turned the sagmented incomplete color swatches from a technical idea at an art store into continuous color field on unstretched canvas. Inspired by that idea, I want to show how continuous color can be turned into a three dimensional cube.
A little background first. We think of color as one characteristic of another object; there's a red car, green lawn, or blue sea. Color by itself is just an idea. Yes, it requires light, but the energy in the light is not exactly color. Color is created inside your brain. Your eyes are sensitive to three energy levels of light, red, green and blue. But the amount of energy detected in your eyes is measured and mixed in the neural pathways of your brain to create the idea of color. But come on, isn't color really real, isn't it really light? No. Not all colors exist in light. Every color in the rainbow comes from sunlight, right? Yes... except magenta. Magenta exists, it's a combination of red and blue light. But there is no magenta energy, no magenta wavelength in sunlight. There is no magenta energy in artificial light. There is no such thing as magenta photons. But magenta exists... in your mind. Magenta is an idea.
If color is an idea, how can it be measured or quantified? How can two humans accurately share the idea of color? To do so people smarter than me have come up with “color space”. A color space is a way of defining and agreeing on what a color is. The monitor you are looking at is using an RGB or Red Green Blue color space. The grocery store circular uses a CMYK or Cyan Magenta Yellow blacK color space. And digital artists use an HSL Hue Saturation and Lightness or HSV (Value) color space. Those all sound like different things with different rules, but they all still relate back to the way humans sense and experience color. This video shows how they relate to each other, how they fit together.
The 3D cube created for the video is a lowtech way experiencing color and how color spaces relate to each other. You can download the template as a .PDF from this link:

After watching the video, I got the idea to make a color cube out of glass (make a square stack of colored glass)
