Leslie is a mystical figure in Rock. An ultra HUGE talent. Yet he shows such an appreciation to other rock talents. Leslie the Godfather of Heavy Metal and the Blues/Rock fusion, yet has a huge heart for the industry.
There are few rockers left like this, very, very few.

I have a similar story. Back in 68(?) went to Eagles Auditorium in Seattle to see the Cream, on acid. 4 days later went out and bought a Gibson EB3. Been playing bass ever since :) RIP Jack, Ginger and Leslie.

I was at that 1967 Cream concert at the Village Theatre on the lower east side. I remember it clearly bc we went to see another group that was billed for that night (I don't remember who they were) On the marquis, the replacement band was Cream. I said to my friend who the hell is Cream. Well, that concert blew me away & I occasionally still listen to their music.

Remember hearing Mississippi Queen as a 10 year old kid on the AM radio thinking(and NOT really realizing at the time) that he was playing the future of MY musical tastes and styling's... Thank YOU Leslie for YOUR influence on my life. Forever GRATEFUL and may you Rest In Peace and Godspeed to you...

If Mr. West would ever see this, i would like to say thank you to him, Corky, Felix, and anyone else involved in the nascent Mountain for a bunch of memories and great music. i always thought Leslie played a Melody Maker when i was i was a young teenager, 'cause my next door neighbor had one Never in my Life, Mississippi Queen, Nantucket Sleigh Ride - at 15, THIS was my kind of classic rock.

I saw him numerous times early on . Including the Fillmore East . I believe he had a Melody Maker , single pickup , single cutaway back then . I think it had a slim headstock compared to the Les Paul Junior . Check out early pictures and compare the headstocks . There may be pictures online , including Wikipedia .

Clapton and other Cream team just recently admitted it was Felix Pappalardi who introduced Clapton to the now famous Cream wah wah sound. The interview resides on youtube somewhere. Mountain, and all of their parts were pioneers, just like Cream was. Black Sabbath OPENED for Mountain. Mountain deserves to be recognized as pioneers in the rock n roll music industry.

I read an interview with Leslie and Felix as a co cover story, the first Guitar Player magazine i ever saw (March, 71) and the seeing Cream bit was described as only Leslie could,,,"I better s#it or get off the pot".
This mag was 'borrowed" from a local library and given to me then by a friend who knew how much i loved Leslie's playing. I was 14.
Had acoustic guitars around the house but always wanted an electric. Leslie got me started a year later. Dangdest thing is, cats that i later copped from (M Schenker, D Meniketti,,,) loved him, too !!
