This is great , Leslie west was biggest influence , he played in Ridgewood high school in New Jersey , he had wall off Marshal amps . I was sitting on the gym floor at his feet . It was the first time I heard Mississippi Queen . And the building shook . I saw a lot of concerts I have seen in my life ,nothing came close to that night he rocked balls off of Jersey.
Greg you scored big here man. This entire series, the great questions. Leslie comes off totally relaxed, quite verbose (about rarely discussed topics), and of course funny as hell. Wish you all the success with your company.
Man, time goes by quick. Been listening to Mounrain and west's other projects since his first mountain album. Ny, has had some good groups come outa there. R. I. P
Was and still am a HUGE Leslie West fan. Saw him like 3 times, one time it was New Canaan HS, jan or feb '69, and it was one of the best concerts Mountain ever did. I bet he even remembers it. Our AV department head set up the old reel to reel recorder and taped the whole concert, although I doubt the band knew that. I had a copy on cassette until, against my better judgement, loaned it to someone who thought it was of no value, and it was stolen out of his unlocked car. Of course, the master was no longer around so it wasn't replaceable. He didn't even apologize as I recall.
This is the first time I have ever heard him speak. Kinda surprised me. I didn't know he was from New Yawk. And yes Maxush, he hit me as Mickey Rourke too lol.
West is by far the top guitarist as far as harmonic feedback mastery...no one has ever done it better. Winwood used a White Hamond C3 most of the time w/ Leslie 145 amplified speaker; Cavaliere (Rascals) & Stein (Vanilla Fudge) B-3's. Greenspoon of 3Dog Night used a B-3 and Leslie 910. Why??? B-3's drawbars simulate length of Pipe in Feet (manual method) and Hamond will customize the labeled Pre-set Tabs (jazz, rock, etc.) to anything as long as you tell them the manual drawbar settings.
@depper Agreed... LOVED Leslie West from day 1 way back when... Saw Mountain MANY times, and personally talked to Leslie more than once. What a great guitar player! His style has certainly influenced the way I play today.
Leslie is an American institution. Its high time the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame tells Modonna and Michael Jackson to open both doors, and make room for the Loch Ness Monster of the Long Island Sound... to enter...
The "pretty" voice was in his guitar. I guess you could say Felix had a pretty voice but it was their "duets" where they would trade off vocals that really was Mountain's best work & trademark sound.
Can listen to West all day. Terrific.
I saw Leslie and Felix open for Cream at Madison Square Garden Nov. '68...will never forget it!

Thanks for the feedback! It means way more than you know!
Cheers!
