A couple of points to note: 1) Dampen the leather before stamping; it will make it easier and more defined. 2) If you don't have a press, DO NOT use a hammer. Sandwich the leather & stamp between two pieces of plywood and clamp together using "C" or "F" style clamps.
Hi, I am wondering what masking material you are using? Can you share a link. We have been making delrin stamps for a few years now and love them but I have never used a making tape to cover the surface of the delrin before, so I thought I might try it.
Hi Lucy! We usually use a standard transfer tape that we purchase from JDS: browse.jdsindustries.com/main.php?r=frontEnd&view=signs&jds-category1=18&jds-category1-desc=Sign+Supplies&jds-category2=144&jds-category2-desc=Tapes&jds-category3=1292&jds-category3-desc=Medium+Tack+Transfer+Tape&jds-categoryX=40X&jds-categoryX-desc=RTape+4050+Aplitape
Masking seems like it’s an incredibly expensive and time consuming step to do for production jobs. Do you guys actually recommend it for bulk order jobs?
Just a warning. Invert Colors in the latest Illustrator (27.9) is under Edit->Edit Colors. Not sure if this is a configuration issue or not. Also, I have text that I converted to vectors and Invert Colors doesn't work to invert the background. The background stays white and the black text becomes white. I'm finding it surprisingly difficult to find any generalized help on how to create text and images in illustrator for laser cutting embossing dies.
With two passes over the delrin die, what was the depth of the final cut in the delrin from it's surface? The depth of cut would obviously effect the final outcome of the leather being embossed. GREAT VIDEO!
The burnt scent will be mostly gone after a few days with light engraving and thin cutting. Rubbing in a leather oil after the engraving will also help.
Far out! Thanks!
Amazing technique , another great video Thank You Laser Dave
Glad you enjoyed it!
Very cool and well explained.

Great advice, Thank you for the tip!😃
Or crush it in a vise between pieces of wood. That works too.
Great video! Quick question. What setting would you recommend with a Glowforge Pro for the Delrin Plastic? Ty
I am unfamiliar with the Glowforge laser systems; you will need to contact glowforge laser for that information.
Great video. I guess I know what I’m doing today…….

It is possible to do this without masking, but the leather will need to be wiped clean and could show some staining from the heat of the laser.

Hi there! The depth we achieved on the debossing die was 0.050. This depth can vary based on the desired embossing or debossing look.
Where can you purchase the Delrin plastics and what thickness are you using to make your dies
We used 1/8" Delrin from McMaster-Carr! www.mcmaster.com/8575K213/
Where can I purchase Delrin plastics? Can you provide a link?

How do you eliminate the burnt leather smell when laser cutting the leather pieces?
The burnt scent will be mostly gone after a few days with light engraving and thin cutting. Rubbing in a leather oil after the engraving will also help.
Could this be used for gilding?
This is a great question; I am unsure as we have yet to explore this possibility.
