Hi Everyone and Welcome Back To My Bucolic Life Channel. Meet my new sewing tutorial.
This time I am doing something a little different, of course, and sewing a cute retro styled dress. I am making it up in a plaid fabric, so that means a lot of matching. Also, putting in an invisible zipper, while matching plaids successfully feels pretty good. There is some pattern modification to make sleeves that seem too narrow, and also adding a little extra ease into the hip area. I hope you like it!

You spoil us Darling! So many delicious videos! What I have learned so far has improved my sewing to almost unimaginable heights. I have now altered a blouse pattern to make a wonderful sloper and then two dresses! And I have understitched, added facings, pinned, marked, punched holes, aligned balance marks and made really beautiful clothing that I have been wearing nonstop. Make more videos! Not everyone could pull off this look, but with your hair and skin tones the colors just pop. My Mother made a similar style dress for me when I was about 13. It was a gray/white/ brown plaid with a white collar and cuffs out of a brushed heavy weight cotton. I loved it and wore it every chance I could.
You know, I think if you did the version without the collar and maybe not as many buttons it would be more acceptable as an everyday for everyone kind of dress. Thank you so much! :)
That is really a lovely little frock. Now, will you be mowing the lawn in this one? 😉 You really need a little hat to go with it and the jacket. Perfect! That collar is really something special, I love it. I'll be using your method from now on. Understitching when the sides are sewn makes for less than fabulous points, so yes, I'll be trying this one out on my next collared garment! I just love your intros...they make me smile every time. I did have to look up the meaning of bucolic at first...always learning 🤣

I have a pair of wiss that were her's that I used when I learned to sew when I was in junior high school. I inherited them when my mom passed. I also got a pair of ghingher when I moved to Texas. The wiss still do the job. I switch between them. I also inherited her Bernina sewing machine.
I know I’m late to the party on this one, but try Kai scissors/pinking sheers, you will never reach for any others!

I'm new to your channel and really enjoyed how this came together. Super dress and looks really great on you. Love how you put the invisible zip in, will do this next time I do one. I can never perfect that little bit at the bottom of the zip. So I will be adopting your method, might just help with this :) Thank you for taking the time to share. It turned out beautiful. It gives me a military vibe. I can see it in dark blue with a white collar and boutons. You did a marvelous job with the stripe placements. I rather like the puckers on the top sleeves. Thank you again for wonderful instructions.

Oh my goodness, I love fun little baby projects! Enjoy your shawl knitting! I have knitted many intricate Estonian lace shawls and love the process! But sadly, the repetitive motions are becoming difficult with arthritic thumbs (a combination of too many years hand milking cows and baton twirling...I know... weird combo). That reminds me of Gordon clan plaid, if i’m not mistaken. It’s been a while since I’ve seen it though, so i might be wrong.
You are an absolute master at matching that plaid up! You even placed everything thoughtfully within the patterns for best effect. It was absolutely worth the effort.
I was so pleased to see how you fit the bottom of that sleeve. We have the same fit, you & I. Big arms, but wide in the side seam when adhering to the cup size instructions. I’ve never known how to overcome that, so thankyou. I always learn something new from your videos.

Thank you! I love the process of matching plaids. Your interfacing looks so good, I am not having such good results (bubbles).
You’re welcome 😊 For the interfacing, just practice with scraps first with different temperatures, steam, etc... if all else fails, try a different interfacing. Sometimes there is a bad batch.

I am so happy to find you, another sewist. I was referred to you by a subscriber who said that you purchased the green linen with daisies on it from Joans. I purchased that linen and when it came out of the wash it felt so scratchy and itchy and woolly that I am considering taking it back for a refund. Did you sew something with it and if so is it scratchy or do you know how I can soften this fabric? I would love to see what you made. Thanks much
Hello!! Look at my video simplicity 9542, gunne sax inspired dress. That's the one I made from the linen. Yes, the first wash was a bit scratcher than some, but not too bad to wear. I find with linen the more times I wash it the softer it gets. Good luck!

I just love your videos . One question, though, why do you serge your pieces before sewing them? I always serge my seams afterward and it trims the seams. If you trim your seams after you sew you cut off the serging and risk raveling.
Hello! So to answer why? I have to say "It depends" But basically, in general, I want to have the ability to press most seams open that serging after wont allow. In general (because there are always exceptions) I trim off serging when grading seams to press flatter, or as specified (like in this pattern) where they have a double row of stitching that will restrain the fabric from fraying. But part of the creative fun in sewing is that you can chose whatever method works better for you! So if you enjoy serging after, by all means, carry on! Cheers!

Love your work , I think you could size down and not put the buttons.
How do you know what you should serger and what you don't? Also, I have been searching ebay for a serger as I am pretty much homebound and have to have things delivered. I have never used one before nor have a clue about them. I've done Lots of research on the ones I see but I don't want to pay that much for one. What advice can you give me in my search for one? You have such great older machines and obviously have a nack for this lol
Hi Kera. I also have a lot delivered. I can tell you what I do, and everyone is different of course, but I tend to get basic singers because they are easy to get parts for, easy to use, and basic enough that there is not a lot to go bad. BUT things can get damaged so I'd look for one that is very gently used. Probably in the $80 range plus shipping. Hope that helps

You can probably turn the subtitles off in your settings for a little while so you can see what you want to, and then turn them back on afterwards
