How An Incredibly Bizarre Restaurant Became A Franchise: Medieval Times

- Today on Weird History Food, we dive deep into the feasting and pageantry of the one and only 'Medieval Times' dinner theater! The Chivalrous History Of Medieval Times spans all the way back to an event held in the 1770s, which at that time harkened back to the glorious Medieval times of England... Over time, new American interest in European medieval games took hold, eventually spawning what we now know as Medieval Times Restaurant. Maybe you've been? Maybe you've always wanted to go? Whatever the case, come take a trip in time with us and see how this way of knight life came to be.

I just remembered "The Cable Guy" with Jim Carrey 😂😂😂
There were no utensils in medieval times hence there are no utensils at medieval times would you like a refill on your Pepsi.
for a "fun" suggestion: my husband and i discovered a dinner theater called "the hatfield and mccoy dinner feud" travelling through sieverville Tennessee if yall wanna look into that insane mess. we couldnt believe it existed and it had a tagline of "hillbilly hijinks" -- honestly wild considering that whole real life situation ended in a literal massacre and people died (including children)
I lived in Sevierville for a few months in 2013 (one of five cities I lived in that year!) Tons of natural beauty but man, that place is not someplace I'm keen on going back to. Bit too much redneck kitsch for one Yankee's tastes.
Good show but very f'ed up.
I am glad to live in a universe where this lunacy exists.
Minus all that union busting....
@@slikskils1603 agreed.
@@slikskils1603 love the union busting.
It's in the same lunacy timeline as ren faires.
My wife and I go whenever we're in Toronto, we've been at least 4 or 5 times now. It's not exactly historically accurate but it's just such a good time. Especially the falcon demonstration, it's always been my favourite part
I was in the Navy back in the early '80s. I think it was 1983 when my ship pulled into Mallorca (Spring or early Summer), for a much-needed Liberty Port. There was a dinner theatre thing we could buy tickets for on the ship-- and I think it was this place. The grand entrance had us greeted by various court nobles, etc. before herding us to our section of seats-- which were divided up into four areas: Blue, Red, Green and Yellow (I think...???) The point was to cheer for your color knight during the jousting and ground battles. The loudest section's knight won the battle. The "serving wenches" were all young and pretty (much appreciated by young sailors out on Liberty!). The food was good enough, but not fancy-- just tossed on your serving bowl as the girls walked past (roast chicken, baked potatoes... maybe a vegie of some sort). The mead cups were filled with wine twice. No reordering! We all screamed and hollered as loud as only sailors can, and our knight won handily every time! After, the jousting arena became a disco with a cash bar and decently loud but unremarkable music. Booze prices were inflated, so we didn't stay long. But what a great time that was! Overall, our stop on Mallorca was one of the best Liberty Ports we saw-- LOTS of other fun stuff to do, there!
LOVE the Medieval Times In Schaumburg (Chicago burb)! I don’t know if the shows are different at the other castles or if Excalibur in Las Vegas is related, but I’ll go to anyone of them.
My wife and I went to the NJ location last May for our Anniversary, it was far beyond expectations. Definitely looking forward to going again one day.
I work at the location in Jersey and we don't mess around here. From top to bottom we all take the job very serious and make sure our lords and ladies have the best possible experience.
I've been to one of these a few times - it made for one of the best early date locations I've ever been to. It's great as if things are going well you can laugh and talk together and if things aren't you can ignore each other and laugh and watch the show. Totally a blast.
I always thought Medieval Times looked dumb but we took our kids to the one in Kissimmee FL and it was great.
I've always wanted to go but now I know they are union busting I think I'll pass.
@@rubiconnnnow I want to go even more
@@rubiconnn That's a really stupid reason not to go somewhere. Very few companies are pro-union. Also, unions are extremely overrated. I was part of a union when I worked for Walt Disney World in 2021-22 yet my pay and benefits weren't any better than they were when I worked at Amazon without a union later.
I first went to this exciting tournament back in 98 and i'm heading there at the end of May with my friends!
Enjoy! 👍🏽
@@darquequeen i sure will!
We took our children back in the 1980's to Medieval Times near Disney. It was a lot of fun and great times. We went on 3 different trips and each was great. Shalom
Seemed like a miss opportunity to have Medieval Times to convert into Game of Thrones where each location is branded one of the Houses, so durring the fight, people can root for their favorite House
Would’ve required them to reach a deal with HBO for licensing the brand. Plus once the show ended, the hype may have died. Especially given how bad the final season was
@@lawrencetalbot8346 its not like medieval times is doing anything else man
If that were the case, which of the Seven Kingdoms' houses would the NJ Medieval Times side with
@@dakineprotoss did you not see the video? They had a massive relaunch the past few years. Medieval Times is a small privately owned company. Their current formula is very successful for an organization their size. Partnering with HBO could’ve been exceedingly expensive, forfeit control of the company to HBO/MAX whoever owns GoT now, and no guarantee of success.
@@lawrencetalbot8346 i saw the video but i literally have not seen a Medieval Times in person since like 1992.
im not hating, i like medieval times but I have a hard time believing they are currently very successful.
I have a buddy that worked for Medieval times in the midwest. There is a LOT of drama behind the scenes between the knights and the positions they play. Its actually quite silly. But it is quite a demanding job and takes a lot of fitness and choreography.
I got dragged while at myrtle beach and it was surprisingly fun
Omg same! My ex insisted we go when we visited myrtle beach and I thought I was going to be awful. But no I had an absolute blast
Why would you think it wouldn't be fun? It's violence and food!
@@Adam-M- I thought that it would be cheesy
@@lisapop5219 It wasn't cheesy?
@@MatthewTheWanderer it was cheesy fun, if that makes sense
Last time i was at medieval times the cops busted a gambling ring
City?
Seriously? Reference?
I wonder if anyone fairly famous ever had their start at Medieval Times?
I've never been to Medieval Times, but I'd like to go there for the shows alone.
It seems stupid to me that they won't allow eating utensils like knives and forks because of "historical accuracy" yet still serve New World foods like corn on the cob, tomato soup, and mashed potatoes. I'd rather the food be accurate than the eating utensils.
Ah yes. Been to the Dallas location a couple times.
I think the last time I was there was like 2014; good times
The movie Garden State is where i first heard of Medieval Times... Jim Parsons and Jean Smart in that scene together are pricelessly perfect!
It's been over 20 years since I went to one, but I loved it!
Thanks for this! 🏰
This was the most magical event I ever went to in middle school in the late 00s in Illinois. I would love to go back again 😁
"Come back here... so that I may brain thee!!!"
Never heard of this until now
I went to the Lyndhurst, New Jersey location on Tuesday, June 15, 2010 as part of a class trip when I was in 6th grade, and we were actually the last class of students to go on that trip as a whole. I have relatively little memory of it, except for the fact that our class was in the "green" section of the audience.
3:30 imo, appropriate for Maryland to recognize jousting as their favorite sport given their flag looks like it could fit in as a Medieval flag.
I've always wanted to go to Medieval Times, but I still haven't ever been to any, even though I lived very close to the one in Central Florida.
I've been to the one in Atlanta, GA twice, absolutely loved it.
Can I wear my Burger King crown into Medieval Times?
I held my birthday party in the Lyndhurst New Jersey Castle some years ago. The men posed with The Queen for a picture, and the women posed with the King.
We were in the second row of the Black and White section. I thought that the people in the first row of the section had a better view, BUT I was wrong. They had to strain their necks to see while my group had PERFECT seats and a PERFECT view.
My best friend and her then boyfriend (now husband) presented me with a Knighting Ceremony. I was the only adult there, BUT I was touched by their gesture.
The Earl Marshall knighted me. "Dame Judi" and announced that it was my birthday.
During the tournament, The King also announced that it was my birthday and wished, "Dame Judi and her group, welcome to the kingdom."
Our Knight won, and after my guest and I posed for pictures with the knights and danced.
It is a shame about the tax evasion and union busting.
I will remember that January day for as long as I can remember.
I loved Medieval Times! One of the best times I had. 🏰😄
Цікаве та інформативне відео. Дякую ❤️
Food and drink plus a show always good times
I used to service their trucks and horse trailers they used for moving the horses around. I got free tickets all the time. Loved going
The union-busting and tax fraud part brought me down lol
Watching this currently right down the street from Medieval Times.
I seem to recall a commercial in which they advertised the show having a story, wherein, "a betrayal is revealed, the wizard predicts doom, a princess professes love, and the people celebrate with their king." I wish I could've seen that version of the show. Sadly, I've only seen a video of the modern version, and a sample show at WonderCon - 3 knights battled it out on stage and the winner got to choose a bride from the audience. He chose a lady cosplaying as Black Cat (Marvel's version of Catwoman).
good video
Was about 20 years ago in the CA arena. It's a fun thing to watch ar least once
now i want to see a story of a woman faking her identity to get the position of medieval times knight disguised as a man and become extremely beloved until one day she goes out joan of arc style
Ah yes, my favorite Arthurian tale, She Beith The Man.
Went here as a kid, this place was fucking amazing. One of my fondest memories as a kid and I can't wait to go again. I also really wanna go to the Pirate version of this.
You mean like the restaurant in The Cable Guy ? 😊
I've been to the Schaumberg location a few times. Always fun, and the horses are well cared for. Food was decent, but really you're paying for the show.
Love a good night at MT, always great entertainment. Arabian Nights in Orlando was awesome too.
Went there while on vacation with my sister in '14. Food was good.
Never been. Seems like it would be a good time
A+ video!
LOVE IT! What a fun time that would be!
It’s awesome! I’ve been a bunch of times. The horses are great.
@@sarahkatie7497 That is really cool!

I will go to one the first good chance I get!
If somewhere in the US, there's a version of Tony and Tina's Wedding about, would love to see it. The food at the Chicago show was really good!
I live 15 minutes from the Maryland location. It's a fun experience!!
I’ve been considering taking my kids there for a few years. Need to make the 1.5 hour drive.
Went to Medieval Times in myrtle beach, had a blast. Then the union busting happened so I won't be back.
Bit ironic that something medieval-themed went out of its way to prevent its knights from forming a guild.
Unions only benefit union bosses, so good on them for fighting off that racket. I’ve never been, but now I’ll go and make up for your lost business. 😉
I never knew they changed the shows every so often, Ive never taken my kids, my wife and I went when we first got married, might be time to take them
I went there for my birthday a few years ago. It's fun once, but I wouldn't make a habit of it. It's $60 a plate fro one thing. Plus you have to show up 90 minutes before the show so that you'll get bored and spend all your money.
I used to go to the one in kissimmee as a kid. It is a good time for sure.
When I was young my parents took me to that place in Orlando when we visited my granduncle. I had so much Pepsi that I threw up all over his bathroom in the middle of the night and had to clean it up myself.
If I was the CEO of medieval times I would demand everyone address me as the high king
I went to the dallas one after 7 on 7 and it was great.
"After 7 on 7"?
i need one in the detroit area please and thank you
Seconded.
ive never met someone who has gone to this thing more than once... and it is always because their parents made them go.
Randy pitchford moment
didn't they have something like this at the Excaliber Hotel in Vegas? I remember going to something like this in the 90's. I thought it was all sort of stupid, but then again, I was stupid at that age haha
It’s the Tournament of Kings. Very similar and very popular.
Never been always wanted to
Same here!
There are two voices that belong. This one and the og dude. Her voice and the classic is the only ones that belong
Scabs crossing the line of course
It’s a free country. Some people want to work while others whine.
Wrench bring me the quench for my thirst!
I've never really had any desire to go there but after seeing this and hearing about their labor practices, ain't no way in hell.
They had a similar one in Austin back in the old days, before the dark times: before the Californians. The Magic Time Machine. Costumed waiters and waitresses from different time periods served you Medieval foods and you ate with your hands. The last time I remember going, we were waited onby King Henry V.
Wow, he really was a man of the people.
The Magic Time Machine. I think there might be one left in the Metroplex.
There’s also a MTM in San Antonio and one in Dallas. I was Michael Jackson there for a few months (before the bad times). Fun job

This narrator needs to learn comedic timing from the other. They just run through jokes in the same tone.
What about "Wild & Crazy Kids" on Nickelodeon?
Medieval times so goated
Medieval Times is fun
To be fair, spending half a mil in today’s money on an event is a pretty good deal. It’d be closer to 2 mil if it had been at like a Dave and busters with how things are going now. Gotta love thriving capitalism 😅
Only other dinner theatre is Australian outback spectacular
wow, how much it is glossed over the mistreatment of their workers.
Well done, mentioning it and then handwaving it away with "eh, kings are awful".
why don' t they do any other food ? is the chicken and garlic bread even any good ? or is chef Mike O' Wave doing the cooking ?
Probably cheaper to buy certain items in bulk than have a variety of stuff.
Yeah... Union busting... I won't be attending any of their shows anytime soon...
I thought there was a location in the Excalibur hotel in Las Vegas?
It’s called the Tournament of Kings. Very similar.
@@sam6235 ah, ok. I have stayed at Excalibur on 2 different occasions, but did not attend the show.
America is a theme park. And they love dinosaurs, they are everywhere.
Oh, it's the sneering comment from our "friends" in Europe. What a surprise. Tend your own garden,
sharia is nearly upon you.
I had no idea America adopted jousting as a sport during the Revolutionary days.
Most people get pumped for the Super Bowl or World Cup; as for ME, nothing gets my blood pumping more than knights attempting to unhorse each other with lances and later duel with swords
Did Renaissance Fairs get created from the same origins or did they have their own path to popularity in the US?
Ren fairs have their own history.
The Renaissance Faire is not a chain of restaurants. Oh, an artist - that explains it. No ability for critical thinking.

Forgiven for being boring and lame
Why do they have to be separate? You never get a hotdog at a baseball game? ...popcorn at the movie?
They don't serve endless Pepsi. They only gave us 1 refill.
Anyone else miss the dude who used to voice these?
