On my way to school the morning I heard about the plane crash on radio. Skipped school that day for first time.
Hello from England
I used to watch BONANZA on TV around the mid to late 70's if my memory services me well. I was still at school and i left in 1981
Lorne Greene, Michael Landon - great show
This is the year my mom was born June 27th 1959 love you mom her oldest sister just passed away yesterday rip auntie Elaine
February 3, 1959 -The Day The Music Died. I was a bit too young, 15 months old, to know anything about it. Years later when I grew to love rock n' roll I learned all about Buddy Holly
Don McLean addressed the incident in his #1 single "American Pie" in the early 1970s.
> 1:35
@@1985OldSkool
American Pie was the history of Rock and Roll set to a melody that causes earworms like no other song.
I was 20 months old, turning 2 that May. Some of music's best died in plane crashes unfortunately, including Patsy Cline, Jim Croce and Rick Nelson. One of the cool things about '70s music is that many songs had Doo-Wop ties to the '50s including 'Crocodile Rock', 'Sugar Baby Love' , 'Only You' (Ringo's) and 'Star Baby' to name 4. The '70s wanted to BE the '50s, remember?
Same here I was born March three 1958 but Buddy was a big influence on me
1959 was also the introduction of a liquid cleaner made by Procter and Gamble called Mr. Clean.
Mr. Clean cleans your whole house and everything that's in it.
Good call
Now updated to "Clean Freak"!
A few years ago P&G came out with a new, buff, updated version of the hairless wonder during the Super Bowl, inexplicably turning him into a sex symbol for the ladies and men alike. Maybe there's a new Count Chocula in the works to capitalize on the vampire craze.
Yeah, when older folks, (much like myself), talk of the 'Good Ol Days'. just listen. these times meant alot to folks back in the day.
So cool to look back!
I was born two weeks after "the day the music died." (Feb.'59)
I think about this cycle of life alot!
Some die and some are born every day...
.
That was a month after Alaska entered the Union, right?
@@Juliaflo Yeah! Jan 3 1959...
I'm beginning to feel my age here! 😁
My two sisters and I each got an original Barbie for Christmas of '59. We each got the one to match our hair color. One redhead, one blonde and myself the brunette. 💗
I was born in 1959, interesting to see what was going on that year.
I love this channel ❤️
I was in my last semester of high school.
I seem to remember a little back then, I think it was in 59 or 60 when my dad couldn't buy beer on Sundays in bottles or cans, he had to bring beer home in a round cardboard container, maybe the size of a quart. It must of been draft beer. I remember trying to make a boat to put in the pond from the round cardboard container.
1959 was also the last year pennies had the laurel leaves on the back with "One Cent" in the middle!
wheat pennies?
@@ShawnCaldwell11 that's what I meant! I knew it was wheat or laurels or similar!
Never knew that! Still collect Wheat pennies
Early rap pioneer "1- cent" made his first record in Omaha that year, too.

😂😅😅
January 3rd, 1959 Alaska became the 49th state, happened several months before Hawaii...equal time, dude...
That was already shown in the previous video.
So it should have been in the 1959 vid.
In Cold Blood was the first book I read cover to cover. I was a kid half scared, half mesmerized.
I suppose it depended on where you lived, but in 1959, I could go to either movie theatre in my home town for a cartoon and a double feature for twenty-five cents.
My birth year ❤
Congrats, I'm September and had a 66 schwinn stingray. Lol
Mine too, on the Ides of March... :-) Congrats to the '59ers!!
I'll join the rest of the 61 or 62 year old's here.
I’m February’59 still have my Barbie Dolls!
We had BOZO in our area, Willard Scott played BOZO. Also went on to national fame as the Ronald McDonald clown. Willard was a radio personality in our area.
Same in our area. Bozo was played by radio personality Ward McIntyre. The most humorless radio personality imaginable. LOL
Knew Willard from the Today Show. Did the weather for years before Fat Al. Did the Smuckers 100 year old birthday wishes too.
Wrong! Bozo the Clown was sponsored by McDonalds. When a new law that went into effect that educational tv shows couldn't be sponsored by any company. McDonalds created Ronald McDonald and the rest as they say is history.
@@marka.graffakasnakebitenat3736 Bozo was created long before McDonalds even existed. Bozo was created in the late 40's. Mcdonalds started in the 50s and didn't go nationwide until the early 60s.
D,C.
I don't know where it cost a dollar for a movie ticket, but in Kansas it was 25 cents!!!!
Remembering 1959: The Sound Of Music premiered on stage on Broadway, along with Fiorello!, Camelot, and Wildcat.
Here's a great milestone in 1959 history! My mother bought the Columbia Harmony Lp, 'Rosemary Clooney in High Fidelity' in the local Piggly Wiggly supermarket! Changed the world forever.......
I was born December of 1959
I was born in 1959…a lot of this is very interesting to me 😊.
I was 7 in 1959- America was on top of the world. Neighborhood's looked out for each other and it began the beginning of the modern age.!!
Your videos are honestly amazing and very instructional. It would be my biggest dream to have the chance to travel through time and go back to old America... Also, I didn't know that Barbie's debut was in March 1959 ! Crazy to think that some things are so old and we wouldn't even imagined. Your channel is a real boon for people who love retro/vintage stuff and history just like me.
You said that so eloquently. Merry Christmas
@@Kenlydford Thank you, merry christmas and a happy new year to you!
I really enjoy the flashback videos!
July 25, 1959: The greatest day of that month. My birth! 😁
I was 7 years old.
I was 12 in 1959. I remember the '59 Steel Strike. My dad was a striking steel worker. I was bad. I remember powder milk, and going without. My parents ran up credit at a local grocery store. I remember taking an envelope with money to pay off the grocery store.
My aunt, who live by would bring food. She had no kids, and would help out.
I remember the look of anguish on my dad's face.
My mother worked so we had a little money coming in
Nine years old,and working on the farm.good hard work.
Born in 1950 or 1949?
This is one of the best channels on UA-cam ❤
In today's money, that "only $75" Brownie camera is worth $700. Just sayin'
And the $1 movie ticket is now $9.25. I don't think these videos were researched at all.
I wondered if anybody would catch that I totally agree $75 just like buying a used car
It's like the nickel Coke.
@@1958indyfan The numbers are legit. That's the way inflation works.
I think that "only $75" was a satirical comment. The person doing these videos makes these cost observations frequently. People who lived through that time understand that $75 was a LOT of money for a simple camera.
I remember 1959 quite clearly. And $75 was a lot of money back then; most people could not afford the Kodak movie camera.
Thanks for posting.
A lot happened the year I was born.🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗
I was born in 59 as well. Just learned I'm 9 days older than Barbie.
I turned 2, my wife says I still am
Yes. For instance I was born. 😁
1959, year I was born same age as the famous Barbie doll. Wow! 62 years ago….
Those were the days my friend
We thought they’d never end
We live the life we choose
. . . . .we fight and never lose
For we were young and sure to have our way. La La La La . . . .
OH BOY! FLASHBACK 1960 UP NEXT , RIGHT?
THANKS FOR YOUR GOOD WORK
Major Professional Sports Championships during 1959:
- MLB: Los Angeles Dodgers defeated Chicago White Sox 4-2 (World Series, Oct. 1-8)
- NBA: Boston Celtics defeated Minneapolis Lakers, 4-0 (Championship Series, April 4-9)
- NFL: Baltimore Colts defeated New York Giants 31-16 (NFL Championship Game)
- NHL: Montreal Canadiens over Toronto Maple Leafs 4-1.
NOTE: The Minneapolis Lakers would relocate to Los Angeles a year later (1960).

I collect vintage Barbie......Easter parade was one of the first outfits......and you could buy a reproduction to get the hat.I have over 500 vintage Barbies....Kens and Midges.I have a #1 but she is not in the best condition.
I collect old matchbox cars. The metal ones. Some were given to me by my grandpa.
Mattel did not make the #1 Barbie to last. Most turn color But even in poor condition she has great value due to the rarety of #1"s . You have quite a find. ♥️
For many years I have considered 1959 as the last normal year.
1959 I had my first McDonald's Cheese burger and fries in North Chicago.
1:00 Bozo was very creepy.
Still is...
Almost all clowns are creepy when seen up close.
Couldn't have said that better 😓👍🏾
It did not cost $1.00 to get into the movies in 1959. I can remember paying 75 cents in the sixties.
50 cents!
@@keiththomas3141 even 50 cents sounds a little high for 1959 but I would not know because I was 5 years old. I sure miss the drive in theaters where you had to hang the speaker on your window.
Love
Thank you
Wow. That Chuck Berry story is one I'd never heard. I didn't realize the Grammys were so young. The 1959 World Series featured the "Go Go" Chicago White Sox and the Los Angeles Dodgers who played their games in the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum that was used for the 1932 Olympics. Due to this, home runs to left were just 250-feet away if you could clear a 42-foot mesh screen. It appears VP Nixon and wife Pat were on hand for the opening of the monorail. While wearing women's clothes was a major part of the joke in "Some Like It Hot", it was clear that Curtis and Lemmon were guys who dressed that way to avoid mobsters, not attempting to bend gender roles. On to the turbulent Sixties, one of my favorite decades.
I was so disappointed the White Sox only won the first game of the World Series.
The best year in my opinion. I was born. ☮️☮️☮️🇺🇸
I was born April 2 of that year!! That was also the year that “The Pill” was invented! Thus, birth control was initiated!! I’m surprised that it wasn’t mentioned!!!
This channel is wickedly underrated
I was born in late 1959
Great video, keep up the good work!
Me2. Brings back good memories.
Another great video thanks 👍👍
1959, a great year to be born in. I didn't know I was the same age as Barbie.
Sure was! Just made it into the 1950's!
AGREED! I was born May 12th,1959.
Me too February 1959, same age as Barbie, except she doesn’t age😆
April 09 1959 Acording to my parents the cutest little baby boy 👶 was born
that little cutie is now 64yrs old and a proud Canadian
My dad was born oct 19, 1959 I always thought it sounded like a cool year
I have an original “Easter Parade” which was Barbie’s very first outfit. It’s near mint and almost complete (need the hat).
I don’t have a #1 Barbie, I have a #3 (1960) and she smells like crayons.
Most older Barbie were conscripted into crash test trials and rocket experiments.
Even the #3 is very valuable today. Since very few #1 are in circulation, As a Lifetime Barbie Collector I would be proud to have a $3 in my collection. I amassed over 300 Barbies , Ken's.& Skipper. In 2008 I sold off half my collection for $10,000.. Still wish I never sold even one of them. My very favorite is the Collectors Club Exclusive Bumble Bee Barbie . Light blue satin dress w\ gold Bumble Bee pin . Glamorous and very special to me. In total , over 500 dolls, Star wars, Tarzan, Disney Princesses. Close out the collection. 💙🌸❤️

Impressive. I only have about 80 Barbies, Kens, Skippers & Midge that are vintage. Have a nice collection of outfits (most in mint or n/m condition. Also, cases, houses, etc., that are truly vintage.
I have probably another 60 NRFB from the 90s.
They are all safety packed away in acid free tissue and acid free cards.
I really enjoyed searching for an item and the thrill of finding it! I’m sure you know what that’s like!
Thanks for sharing and may neither of us will have to sell anything again.
PS My number three is a protégé- she has nipples lol.
Never a Barbie girl. My younger sis was. I played with Trolls ❤️
Someone did one hell of a job casting for the film 'In Cold Blood". I can't believe the resemblances!!
I was born in 1959. It was a banner year! 😆
My dad took me to the movies to see “the shaggy dog “ my brother bought a new Ford Thunderbird , whiteAnd turquoise… Hawaii….
Jan. 3, 1959, Alaska becomes the 49th state. October 1, 1959, yours truly born in Phoenix, Arizona.
2 weeks later in October, I was born
Ok boomers. (I was born in December lol)
Glad to see I'm not the only one who noticed that omission. I remember when I had to learn the new pattern of stars on the flag.

I grew up on reruns on 50's tv shows.

Waylon Jennings was supposed to be on that plane...he was young dude playing bass in Buddy Holly's band and gave up his seat I think to the Big Bopper...
I was born in 59.When I pull the old b+ w pix out ,the young one ask" when did color come into the world" I just smile and say it's been here,we just caught up to it lately.
What made 1959 such a great year was because it was the year I was born. 😁

Aaaand mee tooooooo! Nov. 9. Just made it, whew!
Watching “Mad Men “ shows a lot of this. I read smoking the fake cigarettes were so gross.
Nice video............... 😉👌👍🙂
March 3 ,I was born. April 14 my cousin was born !
1959 is also the year that I was born which should've eclipsed everything else in this video. I have filed a multi-million dollar lawsuit to collect on damages and a severe case of butt hurt syndrome. But I'm willing to settle out of court for some homemade chilli burgers and cheesecake. 😅 😋
I remember the Monorail.
The first pictures of the far side of the moon were taken in 1959 as well.
To add to the creepy factor of 1959, along with Clutter family killings in Kansas by Dick Hickcock and Perry Smith, the spree killer Charles Starkweather was put to death in the electric chair in Nebraska for his murders the previous year - the last person in Nebraska to receive the death penalty until 1994. Something weird in those wheat and corn fields back then.
You can get a used Brownie camera today at a garage sale for like, 2 bucks.
Ahh 1959 a great year the year I was born............
Still before my time. Getting close though.
My parents were married in September 1959.
The best thing that came out in 1959 was me ha ha
