- In this video I demonstrate an easy way to bring your Aluminum boat camping, or transport it without a boat trailer. This boat loader is ideal for loading and unloading your aluminum boat by yourself. I use this boat loader as I do a lot of camping and I want to bring my boat. My boat weighs just over 300lbs with a few mods I have done to the boat. My beam is 70 inches wide at the widest point. This boat loader is like 3/4 of an inch to small but I make it work. Still use it. Had to replace the motor once due to water getting inside. Otherwise it’s been good

No problem! You can buy a boat loader that runs off the front of the truck to accommodate the fifth wheel. It’s a little more bulky on the front of your truck though. Cheers!

I couldn’t make out what line you used to power your boat back to unload. This is a very well done video and it a lot of help for not reinventing the wheel for me. I just can’t see the reversing line in the video. Can you clear that up for us if you get a chance. Thanks for your post
It’s a hollow braided line. I unfortunately don’t have the boat loader anymore as I have gone back to a truck slide in camper so didn’t need the loader anymore. I loved it though when had the trailer. Hated loading and loading the motor and all the fishing gear every trip. So we decided to move back to the slide in. Sorry can’t be more helpful then that. I’m sure my vid has some spots where you can see the lines and how they ran.
Hello Bigair01, pretty cool vid, where did you purchase the boat loader? I can see Westcan Manufacturing stamped on the base brackets. I would appreciate any info regarding your kit. Thanks
I ordered mine from a guy who lived in Vancouver who made them for west can. But you can get a similar boat loader from any canopy place like Cappit or other places like them. They usually run around 3000$ plus they like to charge another 1000$ for the install. But you could do the install I’m sure with some help. Hope that is helpful for you. Cheers

Thanks for the video. So after having this apparatus for a while what do you think? Is it reliable glad you did it? I have the same situation as yours wanna pull a trailer and have a small Jon boat I can put a top my truck. Beefed up my Yakima rack with rollers, stays and stronger bars but still Too hard to do by myself.
I would not bring a boat if I didn’t have one of these. Super easy and has been really reliable.
Great video. When you initially put load on the frame it seems to flex a bit, have you had any issues with the frame in the time you have owned it? did you install the truck rack or did a place install it for you?
I installed the rack myself. The only issue I ever had was water got into the motor and had to replace it. Otherwise zero issues.

gayle ober I don’t have any issues. It performs solidly. I usually guide it either way and the weight of 300lbs makes it pretty hard to be blown around to much
I bought an old loader from a guy near Merritt that has 4 rollers (one powered) and i will rebuild it. It had the power roller second from the back, and I'm thinking about putting it at the rear. But maybe I will leave it as it looks like your boat came off pretty nice. Do you have a link to the owner's manual? I still haven't figured out the rope system.
No unfortunately I do not have a manual for it I’m sorry.
I have my loader all set up. Just hope the old ropes hold up. I did get a wireless remote control for the winch from Amazon. Really nice to have.
Why do you have to jack the trailer like that to get it off? How do you get it back on without the trailer and having the boat jacked at the angle you took it off the trailer? I'm assuming you'll be loading it back on when it's either in the water or flat on the ground so why jack the trailer?
You don’t have to. I just don’t want the pressure of the bunks pushing the aluminum in on the bottom of the boat. Really in the end as long as your the correct distance from the trailer you can do it without jacking the trailer. Cheers
I have a question about this. What’s the combined weight of the boat and trailer? It seems like the winch is strong enough to pull the two of them up together if the boat is lashed down to the trailer. Then you can unload them both and tow it to the landing.
Well it’s only a 2000lb winch. I’m sure you could try. I wouldn’t personally.
Can you get extensions for the wider beam?
Fougere Family Adventures I don’t think you can. You would just have to have it built a little wider. The guy I bought off of subcontracted to westcan and I believe this was one of his biggest ones. He told me it would work and it does it just has to ride on the gunnel on one side for like 3 inches.
Could I use this for a 14” flat bottom Jon boat
jacob marvel how wide is your beam. I would imagine it would be no problem. Depending on the loader you buy but the westcan one in this vid is capable of up to a 70 inch beam wide. My boat is exactly 70 inches wide. It’s just a matter of measuring the where the front eye lets go. Wish I made a vid on that but it was way before I started UA-cam.
Could you let me know how many horsepower the motor is and does it have a gear reduction box?
It’s a 2000lb winch. The winch turns the roller. I don’t believe any hear reduction
What rope are you using? to pull it up and to suspend it?
I believe it’s 1/2 double braided nylon line. It can be threaded back into the centre of the line. Pretty strong line. It came with the loader
I would like to see a version made for an 18ft ssv a 16ft with 3 kids is tight
Ya the problem that occurs is your beam would prob be to wide on 18 or a 16. I think this was one of the biggest loaders I could find at the time. Cheers

So a couple of things. First off I’m confused about water in the motor issue. I what happens when it rains and you’re traveling? Also can you tell me the name of the company who makes this?
The rain caused the parts on inside to rust and break apart. Motor was cheap so when replaced it I made sure to completely seal the outside so no water go into the new motor. The motor was just a generic 2000lb winch. Bought the replacement from Canadian tire.
How does this boat handle the ocean?
Surprisingly well. I put electric down riggers on it. Fish like 200ft down most of the time. I usually go in if it gets to 15 knots plus.

same way that its done at home. Self loads its pretty awesome. If you watched whole video I drop it in a lake. Its just a matter of hooking the 4 points up and hitting the button man. I love it. Cheers

I bought off an old guy in lmd who was a contractor for westcan. Not sure if he is still building them.

1/2 double braided nylon line. You can thread the end into the line anywhere

I am not sure. But when I bought it in 2013 it was 3500 Canadian. I think it is a little more now. But you would have to do some research and find a used one or a dealer. Mine has been a great boat. Absolutely love it. Hopefully you find one.

Anytime. The 14 is surprisingly quite a bit bigger. Well worth the two feet. Much more stable as well Good luck cheers
how long of a boat can you put on it
sam garcia I would say 14 is pretty close to max. A 16 may fit but your biggest issue would be your width and weight. My rack is like 69.5inches wide and my boat at its max is 70 inches. So it does barely fit. It sorta has a small section where it rides on the edge of the gunnel for a few inches. But a skinnier and lighter boat would prob also fit. You just have to figure out where to drill the eyelit holes to hook up your lines. Sorry can’t be more helpful then that!
You are gonna tow a trailer too where does the boat trailer go.
I tow a rv travel trailer. It’s why I have the rack. If I had a slide in camper I would use the normal boat trailer instead of this loader
