    I went to college. I learned three things. Mixology, female anatomy, and that I should have just gone into a trade, because you can still learn the other two and not be $70,000 in debt with loans.

      @haroon zangana Best career decision I have ever made. I accelerated much quicker than anticipated and am running out of my own truck making great money. It comes with it's challenges, sometimes you want to walk off and call it quits but in the end it's a very rewarding career if you can be patient and listen to the ones teaching you.

    I have a son in plumbing at our local trade school now (sophomore - fourth generation of my family at the school). He's starting to get into the meat of the course now. My grandfather was the plumber but passed away years ago. Lacking his wisdom, this is very good info that you'e sharing. This tool kit is now on his Christmas list! Thank you!
    P.S. In case you're curious, I was in Drafting (became a mechanical engineer). All things being equal, I would probably switch my first choice back to Plumbing on my application if possible. It would've been nice to work with my grandfather. But I'll probably be hauling supplies for my son before I leave this earth! So, I have that going for me. ;)

    Got to love them pro press and uponor pipe these days. I'm 53 now and my father was a plumber as well. He use to take me to work with him when I was a kid. He taught me to read a tape and I would cut his copper and cast iron for him. Man today we have it made compared to our fathers plumbing jobs. They had it tough back then.

    Surf's up year round. especially during the hurricane season. I'm not a surfer, but my son is. Thank you for sharing your apprentice videos with us all. Will be following... I'm not afraid of doing dirty jobs. Though I have grown a great respect for all the plumbers out there. Including the do it yourselfers. Some plumbing knowledge is a necessity. I may be a woman, but I ain't no cry baby "polyanna". who drops her handkerchief with my hands over my forehead in distress. If it's somethin' I think I can tackle, and I got the tools. I'll do it. Trials and lots of errors, get's me more motivated and inquisitive to learn. Love this stuff man! Watching your youtube videos, teaches me to do it the correct way with the correct tools. Mahalo and thank you again Chuck.

I also follow Dans Surf Video's...he is out of Hawaii....He makes nice vids. have a great day.

    Chuck, you pretty much covered the basic tools for an apprentice. I would only change one thing, and that's the Douglas pliers. I used to be a staunch Douglas pliers fan, but I got tired of them slipping and getting my palms/fingers pinched. If it was me, I would recommend the basic "Channellock" brand to apprentices. (my opinion)
    I didn't know you were a Pennsylvania boy originally ...that's awesome!
    I started Plumbing at the tender age of 13, as my father started our Plumbing & Heating business in 1972. I would tell any young person looking to get in our field that Plumbing&Heating IS hard work, but also very rewarding. Put the hard work in, and you will have a skill that nobody could ever take away from you.

    Cb2 is armed for bear now, no non tool excuses, I like Klein's nut drivers for toilet tank and base bolts tightening without over torquing and breaking the porcelain, have you tried General tools orange round tubing cutters, 1/2 & 3/4 great for tight quarters just clip them on and turn, no knurl nut to mess with. Also Ridgid's faucet tool great for sink change outs, easier than reg basin wrench, good for sink nuts, supply lines, strainers etc.

    • @ChuckBarron
      @ChuckBarron  6 років тому

      another tool I forgot the basin wrench.....good eye muni. I have always used ridgid cutters. I will check em out when I come across them.

    Great guy, wish I started with you. Most of what you have is great however with some of the modern tools available at the Hardware store I would recommend a Hose Clamp Torque wrench, Close tolerance pipe cutters, Monkey Wrench(pipe), and quick cutters for your Ptrap tubulars and 1.5" and 2" ABS/PVC.

    Im a union sprinklerfitter and when I did contract work before I started on service the only tools commercial union plumbers carried were channellocks, 9 or 12 inch torpedo level, tape measure and a sharpie marker. 95% of all there work was accomplished using those few tools.

    Biggest thing when you're first starting; DON'T STAND AROUND DOING NOTHING. Even if you weren't given anything to do, find something to do. Sweep, clean, organize tools, recharge batteries, ask questions, something. I've seen many 1st years fired for standing around too much, drives the rest of us nuts. Ask questions is another big one if you've got a teacher that's willing to answer them. A lot of guys don't want to answer any questions so don't annoy them with any and try to find another guy to work with that will. Beat your boss to the job and show willingness and eagerness to work and learn is the last big one. If you do those 3 things, you'll be alright.

    Do you have to go to college to become a certified plumber? I've worked as a plumber for over 2 years. The company I work for keeps giving me the run around and wont log my hours in. Always have one excuse or another as too why they are unable. It's a small company of 3 people. The owner and 2 service techs one being me. The senior service tech is a registered apprentice. Hes in his 40s and ain't ever considering taking his journeyman test which leaves me in limbo. I was promised an apprenticeship when I got hired. They are great people to work with and are a good company. I just want to pursue more in my career. It is so hard to find apprenticeship elsewhere I've been looking. Long story short, I was wondering if there's another Avenue to take to become a liscenced plumber. Thank you for your time and I hope you have a nice day. Great videos.

    Onestop wrench for the angle stops

  • @joshcowart2446
    @joshcowart2446 5 років тому +1

    No crescent wrenches? I’ve become an old grouch when it comes to crescent wrenches. I see everyone grab channel locks to tighten everything. I always get onto them and tell them to use the proper tool for the job. Channel locks just chew up nuts so if you come back later with a crescent it won’t work. Also if you have something that’s super tight, it’s very difficult with channel locks. You have to squeeze very hard while also turning and you end up just scraping off a bunch of metal.

    • @aizen115
      @aizen115 5 років тому +2

      Josh Cowart Word! Thats why i rather use a crescent wrench when tightening nuts & bolts. You get a better grip on it and more leverage for better ease and you wont mess up the nut or bolt. Espeacially if its finish.

    • @joshcowart2446
      @joshcowart2446 5 років тому +1

      Part of the reason I’m a stickler about it is that’s how the guy who taught me was. Also I’ve been in several situations where I was working on bigger pipe or something super tight and it’s just really hard to do it with channel locks because you have to fight yourself. That’s when I went out and bought some larger crescents. Oh and a spud wrench can be very helpful as well

    A lot of apprentices don’t wanna buy tools. I’m 20 years old and a apprentice in San Antonio and I’ve gathered up more tools than my plumber now.
    I have a Hammer/rotary drill, impact, chalk box, laser level, bandsaw, sawzall, copper cutters all sizes,panel lights, soldering kit ( map gas and B tank rig)
    I think all plumbers apprentices should gather up all the tools the plumber has over the years of the apprenticeship and by 2nd or 3rd year I think we should have everything they have besides the obvious like chain cutters, propress, threaders you know the high dollar stuff
