- You asked for it, so we made it. Today, we're talking about the tools you're going to need when starting as a plumber. The tools we're talking about are basic, essential tools. You may need more tools or different tools depending on the type of plumbing you're getting into.
I suggest you ask your boss before your first day what all you need to bring when you show up for your first real day of plumbing. They may require you to supply some tools, they may supply them all for you. It just depends.

When I was 18 I got hired on with a small plumbing company I was young and excited so I went bought myself a hammer channel locks tape measure but I bought a tool belt (I didn't know what to expectfirst time doing any type of construction) the boss laughed and said I showed initiative versus the other people he hired and then told me to take off the belt lol
That’s funny. My boss told me to get a belt. I’m an electrician tho. I use most of what I carry every day so i guess it works out

a (ahallow) bucket, to capture to water in pipes , once you cut off or remove stop valves. Essential!
The cool mustache/beard is universal between all trades/engineering careers. It’s a symbol of respect. All those that have a visual mind.
I am first year through college. Then I ran across Roger Wakefields videos, suddenly I find myself searching for tools and making that step into the trades. I wanted to do something different and with work with my hands. Thanks Roger for being a huge Inspiration! Heres to future in plumbing🚽👨🔧

Yep, went to college after high school, huge regret, now I am on my last quarter and just wish to start working.
To anyone who just finished high school and wants to get into construction, do not go to college. If anything you can do that later, try working first, I can't believe I wasted almost 4 years of my life on bs diploma, could have already been making 70+ a year.
I would also add a light and a sharpie or something to mark your cuts

Finally got enrolled in a plumbing apprenticeship. Its private (open shop) and Im registered for their classes and 3rd on the dispatch list for work. So these videos are nice, making a list of what to get prior to getting the call and what can probably wait

Since my first day training in electrical training Every one of these has been worth it to have since the first minute.
I’m not even a plumber lol. I work in fire, smoke, water, and mold restoration. But occasionally I have to take sinks and toilets out. Just wanted to polish up my tool kit with the essentials. Thank you

My work provided a head lamp and pex cutters first day. The other thing that would be good is a razor knife (I’m fond of the Milwaukee fastbacks now, but I started with some cheap dollar store or maybe it wa harbor freight thing that rusted in 3 days and I used it for weeks). This is honestly more stuff than I’d personally recommend buying before your first day. But one thing that can’t hurt is a pair of good gloves that allow for dexterity.
I am currently in an apprenticeship, 6-in-1 screwdriver, tape measure, box cutter, and a Sharpie marker are carried by everyone at work all the time and one of the old guys adds a small adjustable wrench in his leg pocket.
My first day was with my best friend and his company because he needed help. Showed up with my whole trailer that had all my car repair tools. Little over kill but hey we used some of them.

The first day of my apprenticeship i brought most of these and so far have only used my tape measure and channel, that said always better to have it and not need it than vice versea

A marker and a utility knife. A must have in my book. My boss always asks me for a marker, a utility knife and a tape. So I have to be ready! Haha
Lol I used to have a tape measure then I became a master of you know what I need a piece about 6 feet and then watch your apprentice have his mind blown when your right

The all in one drivers are nice, but I have not had one yet, that doesnt fall apart. The klein has been the best so far (electrician contractor)
I didn’t show up to my first job with tools but I was told we will be supplied our tools when starting our apprenticeship.
so how is your plumbing career going?
I swear by that wide azz adjustable wrench from channellock, but it is the only tool from that brand I carry, all other pliers, wrenches, drivers etc are for the most part from Knipex, Wera, and Ridgid. I believe willingness to invest in high end tools says a lot about you. 2 things I'd include on your list are kneepads and a flashlight. I'd also swap one or both of those levels for the gradient version. You can always sit a gradient torpedo level on any larger length level for a more accurate reading of slope. I know its not a tool most apprentices would buy, although I did and swear by it; a laser level. Setting slope over long lengths, laying out holes horizontally and vertically, setting shower valves, it'd be a hard tool for me to part with. Something to carry tools with? Go Veto Pro Pac.

Pvc saw and tube cutter
When you start getting some power tools, get a flashlight that goes with the batteries you can hang or flex for working in spots. A good pair of rubber boots, for muddy spots. I like a five gallon bucket for several reasons, I can haul the tools I need, trash, water etc. I don’t have to take my tool box in and out and it makes clean up after a job much easier.
my old man has been laying pipe since he was 18 outa high school… still never graduated from the 5 gallon bucket😂 had same one for 15 years and counting

Hammer, level, tape measure, and marker. Boom
I would say pipe cutters for copper. Especially in commercial plumbing make sure you have multiple sizes.
Electrical. Multiple channel locks, strap/pipe wrench, impact and drill. Sockets and chucks, uni bit, hole saw kit, linesmen 9" plyers, tape measure, wire strippers, hammer. Then spend like 800 more on finishing your basic sett.
440,430,426, 442, channel locks, 460 towards commercial calls. Copper cutters being mini, medium, also Ridgid #152 cutters, stellar within any chrome plated brass tubular, rough brass tubular, Abs, and-or Copper, very diversified, up to 2". Ridgid#151 cutters are adaquate, but only cut up to 1"-5/8ths. Torch tips, self lighting tips, mapp fuel, and-or acetylene. M-c Acetylene tanks, always carry 2. If you are within a call, run out, example being past 6:00pm, no supply house is open. Customer now no water, travels until following day, supply houses don't open until 6:00am next calendar date. You second trip, secondary crawl, all un-nessesary any way thought towards. Fittings, take as many as possible under a raised foundation residential, and-or commercial, has no prevelance. Due to crawling 40'-60' back n forth within 1-2 fittings in your shallow tray is foolish. Same applies towards solder, Teflon tape, mapp fuel, always least 2. Or be a plumber in example 30's-40's age, torqued body from un-nessesarys, not using what's up-stairs, which some call it your noodle/brain. My close friend is now 62-years age, journeyman plumber since 1992, still running calls from moderate to very difficult physically demanding calls. Body within 20's-30's intact, not torqued, functioning like a 30 year old for most part, all due to two reasons. Attending/completing Phcc-plumbing occupations school, also post school, being trained within veteran service plumbers that left nearly all within land time forgot, in Longevity catagory.
I just started at Roto rooter as an apprentice and they supply tools but the other service techs have bought most of their own tools just for preference. Do you prefer Milwaukee or dewalt???
I went to work for a contractor First Tool I bought a couple days into the job was a hammer and a cat's paw and that was good for up to 4 months
Then I had to buy a tool belt with all the basic carpentry tools

Depends on how bad your claustrophobia is. Every call is different.
An impact drill with different length 1/4 inch magnetic bit holders and bits, fire collars can't be put in with tape
Also I'd love to see a proper fire collar demonstration and what happens to one during a fire. And yeah a good light is needed for new construction, hard hat, high visibility shirt, pants, high visibility vest, safety glasses, GLOVES, steel toe boots

@kyrojag I still beleive this 3 years later. even more now, actually. Way too many dumb things that happen on jobsites. I'd rather look and act like a dweeb than get ran over/forgotten about/hurt etc. Safety is number 1, I don't get paid enough to be a dead or disfigured dad

Anyone tired of having your black sharpies stolen on the job site? When you buy them, buy red, yellow, and orange ones too. Replace the black caps with the brightly colored ones. Nobody will grab them if you leave them lying around, as any color other than black is practically obsolete on a job site

Forgive me if I misunderstood but your asking, "why make these videos if people who aren't licensed can't do it?" If I'm correct then I'd like to say this: I've been applying for the union and trying to use these videos and so many more as studying material so even as my first day I won't be to lost. Have been studying for a couple months and I have more notes then I wrote in highschool, but I personally use these videos as good ways of taking notes.
