  • In Uganda, young women are leaving their homes to try and find jobs as domestic workers, but for some their new lives can lead to mistreatment and abuse.
A charity in Kenya is calling for the introduction of laws to protect domestic workers, who are commonly referred to as ‘housegirls’, to ensure their safety.
For BBC Africa Eye, reporter Nancy Kacungira has been investigating why young women living near Uganda’s border are leaving their villages to find work in Kenya.

Take heart sisters. I was a maid in Zimbabwe, treated like a donkey, when the madam boss realized I was smart she started getting worried about her husband noticing. I had to leave. On Monday I submitted my Bachelors thesis in another country. I am going to be a teacher and I got employed before finishing my studies. Keep the faith. One day it shall be well.

I'm from Philippines and i can relate the girls situation. I'm also a House girl (Domestic Helper) in Hong Kong my Chinese employer treated like an animal. I only have one meal a day and no proper bed during winter. My female employer always jealous if her husband look at me or talk to me. The pain of being alone and away from home combined with maltreatment, over work and luck of sleep broke my spirit. The egency that brought me to Hong Kong did nothing to help me. I suffered 2 yrs to finished my contract and finally, now im home!To all house girls like me all over the world, im sending you all my hugs and prayers .I hope someday life will be easy for us all.

That is a good idea, but first, these countries need to establish and maintain a public education system that educates their populations to enter a viable economy, so that domestic, or farm work is not a default option for the majority of their population. Almost everyone that has the resources to gain education leaves, or runs an internet scam.

Just because she's preparing the food doesn't mean they will allow her to eat it. That's especially cruel, imo, to have to prepare someone's meals but not be allowed even a bite. Its all about power. They have the power over the worker and it makes them feel better/more powerful. These people are obviously suffering inside themselves to be this cruel to innocent people just trying to make a living. Like that girl said at the end, "If I had money, wouldn't we be the same?" But generally people who have more think themselves better just because they have more. I guess it can be boiled down to that maybe they are scared that if they loose their money/power then they could end up the same way and no one wants to suffer just to live. I don't know. Maybe I'm wrong. I'm just thinking out loud, really.

The proof in the pudding....them claws look like they could do some serious scratching...and what do they mean by she went to a wedding. The girl works for them...and they need to realize that she is free and should be able to have down time to do whatever she wants with it. All these people just love to be the slave drivers. Let the people be free to serve in peace. Housework is an art that not everyone can do well and it should be compensated properly and treated as an important service. I would not waste my time keeping house for anyone who don't appreciate me.

Growing up we had house helps but people can never tell if they were house helps or one of my mom’s kids. We were not allowed to call them maids in our house. To her, they are part of the family.

I feel thier sufferings.Way back in 2004,I became a house girl or domestic helper too here in my country(Philippines). Many of us treated as human,we had full benefits given by the employer .I thought,I could not change my future and will be a house girl forever but Thank God my employer is so kind, she sent me in school. While doing house chores at daytime,I go to school at night.
My advice to all these women, please be brave and find ways to escape from poverty.Educate yourselves and know your rights as human and as an employee.Poverty is just temporary, our future is in our hands.
