  • Josh Morgerman chases a dangerous hurricane across the far corners of Mexico. His journey brings him to the tiny town of Santa Cruz, Nayarit, for a wild ride in the middle of the night. The hurricane makes a ferocious direct hit, with the eye passing right over the village-and neither he nor the townspeople are ready for the violence that unfolds. (If you just want sexy hurricane footage, skip to The Impact chapter.)

    Very very cool video, querido amigo! Congratulations! I was really expecting a great story, but this one is remarkable. Being part of this frantic and at times scary chase was a unique experience, we made a great team! Thank you for the ride!

    This was a living nightmare. I would have never thought that this is the reality of such a ferocious storm. Living in New York I remember Isaias and Ida and during Ida a EF-1 went right over my building. I really am praying that most people have survived and people were able to recover. You do so much for your subscribers risking your safety just for letting us know the reality if these storms. Thank you so much Josh.

    What a treat! Thank you for the mini film, Josh, absolutely incredible footage! Fantastic editing and music choice as well, whilst letting the visuals do the talking during the hurricane and aftermath. I really enjoy watching your whole journey. Seeing the calm before and after gives us a better appreciation of the power of the storm.
    ROSLYN was certainly a feisty li'l thing, so glad you came through it unscathed! Your car looked OK too, considering it took the full force of the backside (good job that piece of roof (?) didn't fly into the windscreen!). You and Erik make a great team, I'm convinced you both have balls of steel 😁.
    Probably not your original intention but I'm pretty certain this video features the most animals of all your uploads! Loved seeing another 'cane canine get some chaserdude reassurance as well! You're so caring of everyone and everything ❤️.

I am always so flattered when you dig my work, as you are one of the very best and a true connoisseur of the genre. :) Agreed, there is something about these small, intense, fast-moving 'canes that is strangely... scary. They just seem to have a more angry feel. I am glad that came through for you in the video. And I am glad you dig the longer format-- I had a lot of "internal debate" about it. There are many other areas that produce a lot of cyclones, but none so densely.

    Absolutely epic. Obviously not the good kind of epic, but just seeing the raw power of such a condensed storm is absolutely mind-blowing. Hoping nobody in that lovely town was hurt or killed. The love everybody has for each other really shows that beautiful community. Thank you for this footage as always.
    Edit: I quickly googled the Hurricane for basic information, and the damage is labeled “minimal”. I would say the damage this footage shows is anything BUT minimal.

    • @iCyclone
      @iCyclone  Рік тому +7

      Thanks so much for these thoughtful and kind comments. I noticed that in general, the media and online resources seem to rate events solely based on the cumulative price tag, so that if a small community is devastated, they don't see it as impactful because there isn't that big-city price tag. Folks from Santa Cruz would of course disagree with this assessment.

    • @dijek
      @dijek Рік тому +3

      @@iCyclone That’s what I figured. The scale of the disaster seems to be the main idea behind the minimal rating, with the hurricane hitting such a desolate area. It’s these types of disasters though that often become overshadowed and dismissed, which is a serious bummer. I’m sure it will take years for those folks to return to normal.

    That was an epic chase! I definitely believe Roslyn was still a Cat 4 at landfall, despite its mediocre IR appearance. It's really amazing just how compact that storm was, in and out in an hour. The constant lightning was definitely proof that this was a vicious TC with deep convection. Kudos to you for documenting not just the impact, but also the scenery beforehand and aftermath! Glad to see Santa Cruz quickly cleaned up from it.

      Awww, thanks, Ethan! I am so glad you dug the video. Yeah, wasn't it crazy how small it was, and how fast it came and went? Weird sh*t. Like you, I wonder if it was a Cat 4. It was so violent. And the pressure gradients I measured in the core were crazy-- steeper than I've measured in lots of Cat 4s. Anyhoo, glad you enjoyed it. Thx.

    Incredible hurricane, incredible video. Thanks for sharing it with us Josh. I really loved that you new video format, the search and chase parts was really cool to watch (by the way, nice background music). It was an intense hurricane, i can't imagine that you and Erik felt at this moment, but it was REALLY scary.
    I was heartbroken to see the dog shaking, it must not have been an easy night for him. I liked The Aftermath, as my native language is Portuguese and it's similar to Spanish, I could understand what the Mexican natives were saying, all of them really scared, but they were brave. I think they learned that it's better to evacuate.

    Not relative to this hurricane but I saw this comment made by you....could you explain what you mean re the 1 min standard, etc, please ?
    "Now 61 knots gusting to 90. I'm pretty sure that sustained wind is a 10-min wind, so based on the American 1-min standard, they're getting a full-on hurricane right now."

    Also during hurricanes, are they supposed to produce lightning

      @@local_furry_SCOTLAND The buildings in this part of Mexico are pretty strong-- they're made of solid concrete. Remember, a hurricane's estimated wind speed is the *sustained* 1-minute-average wind speed (gusts would be higher). There's been no storm on record in the United Kingdom with 1-minute-average sustained winds of 120 mph-- not even the great 1987 storm.

      @@iCyclone what about hurricane low q or more commonly known as the grate storm of 68 or the Braer Storm i mean they must of been similar in power if not tiny bit stronger

    • @iCyclone
      @iCyclone  Рік тому

      @@local_furry_SCOTLAND There's not a lot of wind data from Low Q of 1968, but I see the peak *gust* (not sustained) was 134 mph. *However* that was on Great Dun Fell, which is a mountain peak at 848 meters. In storms, winds on mountain peaks and the upper floors of skyscrapers are way stronger than what's happening at the surface, and if you want to compare apples to apples, you want to compare *surface* winds. Low Q and the the Great Storm of 1987 were very strong storms-- don't get me wrong. But they did not have the winds of a Category 3 hurricane.
