Post-Finasteride Syndrome (PFS) deformed and numbed my genitals. Tissue damage in the penis, structural changes, shrivelled, no tactile feeling anymore, inability to get aroused, zero libido and ED. I have been suffering from this torture every single day for years. Nobody believes me. There is no treatment. Thank you doctors for raising awareness, but I'm close to ending it all. I've been taking 0.5mg (half a pill of 1mg finasteride) 6 days a week for about 5 years. I started around my 27th birthday, and I just turned 33. At 1mg, I felt some side effects (chest tightness, lower libido), but at the same time, I was also dealing with intense stress from being self-conscious about my hair loss and paranoid about side effects. After finding online that the efficacy is roughly the same at a half dosage with fewer side effects, I lowered the dosage. Since then, I have had no noticeable side effects, and my hair is the same with no noticeable hair loss from age 27 (I take photos once a month to track it).
I should note, however, that while the rest of the men on both sides of my family are bald/balding, my 70-year-old father has nearly as much hair as I do. His father (my grandfather) was bald in his 30s, but his father's father (my great-grandfather) had a full head of hair until the day he died! Go figure. If there was a better test to figure out whether or not I was actually losing my hair or if this was my natural "mature" hair pattern like my father's, I'd pay for it.
It's a little tricky for me to determine whether some depression I occasionally feel is due to the drug, my family history, or both. Many male and female members of my family deal with mild depression. In general, I have not noticed any issues with my sex drive or sex life, and if anything, as I got older, it improved alongside my overall confidence, as one would expect.
That said, as I got older, I also became more comfortable with the likely chance that I'd be mostly bald one day. As you can see with both of these guys in the video, being bald does not mean you are not attractive. Some of the most powerful men in the world are bald. Some of the most attractive (as ranked by women) are as well. This is something I came to terms with myself, and it really helped me relax about the inevitable loss of my hair when I stopped taking the drug. Confidence, personality, overall health, and fitness -- and frankly, whether or not you had a good-looking face in the first place -- really are more likely to determine your "attractiveness" than your hair ever will. Some people also look better bald, especially in their 40s onward: The Rock, Jason Statham, Bruce Willis, Vin Diesel, Ed Harris (even looks badass with the donut hair), John Travolta, etc etc.

finasteride, we can expect side effects to occur. For one, there’s increased GABA activity in the brain with DHT, likely due to DHT metabolites modulating GABA-A receptors (10, 11), which provides an anxiolytic effect (reduced anxiety). DHT may also modify circuitry in the brain by altering the number of excitatory spine synapses in a paracrine manner, which can therefore affect cognitive function (in a positive manner) of the brain (12). It’s been established that the risk of dementia is in fact greater for patients using 5α-reductase inhibitors (13), further demonstrating the need for DHT in the brain for adequate cognitive function and health. In male rats, it has been demonstrated that finasteride inhibits the brains dopaminergic system (involved in the reward system and sense of wellbeing) (14) which may well transfer to humans. It has even been suggested to use testosterone supplementation (note: within physiological levels) to improve cognition in older men, in part due to the neuroprotective and excitatory effects of DHT (12). Put simply, DHT is actually quite important for good mental health. It will reduce feelings of anxiety, improve feelings of wellbeing, and improve cognitive function.
Additionally, progesterone (another important steroid hormone) can be converted to allopregnanolone via 5α-reductase. Allopregnanolone is a potent ligand of the GABA-A receptor, which in normal circumstances will reduce the risk of anxiety, major depression, impulsive aggression, and negative symptoms in schizophrenia (15). So, that’s another thing lost to the use of finasteride.

This is theoretical and unproven information at best. 1mg finasteride a day lowers dht levels by about %70. Not %100. Dht concentration is found in tissues such as the scalp, skin, and prostate. There is no clinical evidence to suggest that finasteride has any impact on cognitive function in humans. Given the fact that a lot of people will experience depression at some point in their lives anyway, theres no evidence to suggest that finasteride causes an increase over baseline.

The androgen receptor is directly involved in the genome and gene regulation specifically in androgen related genes and 5-alpha reductase such as SRD5A2. Modifications to the AR can result in gene silencing and multiple cascades involving metabolic pathway signaling and cellular response such as oxidative stress involving endoplasmic reticulum induced apoptosis and even individual gene changes regarding homeostatic mechanisms and cancer progression

Finasteride treatment impairs biosynthesis and function of neurosteroids, which are critical regulators of central (CNS) as well as peripheral nervous system functions and modulate a host of neurotransmitter receptors, such as gamma amino butyric acid receptors. Thus, finasteride-induced neuroendocrine disruption of biosynthesis of critical signaling molecules results in pathophysiological states, which contribute to inhibition of biochemical pathways responsible for a host of physiological functions, ranging from sexual activity, mood, and cognition. In addition, finasteride-induced epigenetic changes in gene expression, including upregulation of androgen receptors (AR), increased histone acetylation, and methylation results in undesirable biological outcomes such as impairment of dopaminergic signaling and modulation of other neurotransmitter receptors, may be the underlying mechanism causing persistent or permanent adverse effects, manifested in anxiety, depression, and suicidal ideation.

Then I find out this syndrome is what caused all of this for me that it’s in fact permanent. I still deal with all the same symptoms a year after being off of it. I also developed bone demineralization from the androgen deprivation because my DHT was reduced to literally about zero the entire time.

I risked this procedure because I wanted to get off the dutasteride (Avodart) drug. It has worked well for years, but all of a sudden my libido suddenly dropped off. I’ve maintained good T levels through my life, but taking a drug designed to mitigate certain levels to reduce prostrate size became a concern. I’m hoping that the Aquablation works as advertised and that I can stop taking the T reducing drug. And with that, my sudden ED problems will go away. I’m 63 yrs old but very fit and active.

I've been taking 1mg finasteride for 8.5 months. I *think* (hope) that it's slowing my hair loss/regrowing hair. The only symptom I've noticed is significantly lower semen volume (approximately 50% less) and maybe slightly lower desire for sex, which I don't really have an issue with. I was probably obsessed with sex so I feel like now I have a much better balance with it

most dudes with this are in super good shape. I actually rarely if ever see overweight people with this issue. you are lucky you have a strong homeostatic genetic baseline/profile. consider yourself one of the rare ones because while permanent and life ruining cases of PFS are not the majority (consider me unlucky), the majority do get some kind of negative symptom if not multiple while taking the drug which is why most dont get PFS cus they quit the drug due to how bad the sides were, before systemically disrupting their neuroendocrinological pathways, steroidogenesis and metabolic mechanisms, and ultimately altering their androgen receptor or silencing/modifying certain genes for the rest of their lives. There are many suspected and now growingly proven reasons some people are much more predisposed to developing this and it has a lot more to do with factors such as ADD and other neurochemical and dopaminergic congenital conditions compared to the neurotypical individual as these create a naturally more fragile homeostatic profile, therefore more susceptible to adverse affects from complete androgen manipulation/deprivation than someone who has a backup system genetically available when undergoing the same treatment.

I've taken it for 6 years. Had some mild symptoms after the first year or so but they resolved after a two week break, and I havent had any side effects since. Imo it is tremendously irresponsible to feed into the anxiety and fears of young men by pretending that PFS is a thing. A serious medical professional would *NEVER* mention a 'syndrome' that isn't clinically proven without at the very, very least saying as much.
That is imo what makes these "PFS" scaremonger youtube doctors unreliable and difficult to take seriously. They want you to buy their testosterone therapy BS so they need to convince you that you have a problem. Hell, some people on the pro-PFS forums on reddit will claim stuff like "men who say they dont experience side effects are lying to themselves" its like they're invested in people sharing their self-induced make believe.

My husband has been on fin for 4 years. He’s 71. Every man in his family had total hair loss by 60, so when his fantastic hair started to thin in his mid 60s he tried minoxidil with no results. Then he started fin. Not only did it stop the hair loss, but it’s filled back in. At 71!!!
His side effects were only that he couldn’t “finish” during sex. But, he was patient (I was as well, lol) and that went away after a couple of months.
He intends to continue to take it.
All I can tell you is he’s fit, active, exercises regularly, eats well, and is told regularly he looks 50.

the fact that this guest talked about hair transplants as an alternative to finasteride shows he has no idea what hes talking about. no doctor will do a hair transplant without finasteride, otherwise the hairs will just fall out again anyway

The transplanted hairs are immune to DHT so they don't fall out, it's true you'll probably need multiple transplants if you don't take fina but that's worth it to avoid the hormonal poison that is finasteride.

@@MrPelham32 Doctors prescribe many things with deleterious side effects, and there are people who take these potentially destructive substances without negative side effects. I think the issue with finasteride is that people are taking a risk, even if that risk is relatively small, for something that is trivial - looking good. People are taking a risk for vanity. While in other cases, where a doctor prescribes something with possible negative side effects, the patient takes the risk because of the health or life saving effect of the drug. Its the trading of health of vanity that the original commenter (@fitmind231), and I, find foolish.
