      @@MicroFourNerds just the PDAF would be a game changer but I've got a feeling that even if they would like to make such addition in their m43 cameras, it would be a top tier device, like G9 and GH series successor. Not a small GX series camera or something similar. And even if (too many ifs already ;)), that would be so pricey... Bye the way - GX9 is already 5 years old!

    I love the M43 System too. ❤ I use also APSC and FF Cameras but I tend to use M43 90% of the time. I hope that we will see wonderful M43 cameras in the next months and years. My wish list is enormous: GM line, GX10, G9ii, GH6ii (or S, or X… or GH7), PenFii, OM3 (small like the OM5 but metal body new sensor and menu and USBC). I would love to see a new PRO Parfocal EZ lens for video. And more Wildlife and Sport Lenses.

    As someone who is new to M43, I tend to agree with your comments, Emily. I am not so keen to lug a lot of weight around, and I sold off my (Fujifilm) X-S10 in favour of an OM-1. In so doing, on the equivalent kit, I saved nearly 2 kg, which is a lot given my age. I'm blown away by the IBIS and I'm also finding the lenses I have are *sharp*! I'm not much of a photographer, but I try and I enjoy my pursuit. I'm also aware that if I had bought a medium-format camera - not possible given my financial controller's... approach to expenditure - my compositions would not be any better than they currently are. You touched on computational photography: here M43 has indeed stolen a march on the rest of the world and given that camera processors aren't going to get any *less* powerful, I expect this feature to be expanded in the future - what if we had a combination of HDR plus hi-res mode in-camera? Phone cameras for a while have artificially adjusted bokeh for years now, so why not in M43? And applications from Topaz, ON1, DxO, and (probably more) are doing remarkable things with noise reduction and picture enlargement, with more to come for sure. I think that far from being at the end of its development, M43 appears to be surging forward. And that's a great thing for us all.

    I bought my first m43 camera back in 2012, the OMD EM5, replacing my full frame Canon 5Dii. The other day I was going through a photography project I'd forgotten about and was marvelling at how beautiful these photos were, even if I say so myself! I loved that camera so much and it clearly shows in the pictures I took with it and the excellent glass i bought to accompany it. I still own all the lenses and will probably buy another m43 camera at some point. I still use m43 for video (GH5) and the footage stands up against the footage I take with my full frame Sony. Yes, m43 is still awesome.

    Yep, I have no desire to go Full-Frame and I'm so glad that I ploughed all my pennies into Micro Four Thirds, especially Panasonic.
    I did have a wobble when Phased Detection was taking all the shine off my weapons of choice. But thankfully Panasonic has seen the light and is starting to release cameras with this feature. I can't wait for a GH (insert number here) with Phased Detection.
    Right now I'm loving my second-hand G9 and 200mm Prime bought from MPB. Having a six year old G9 second-hand camera, with the Pre-photo burst feature, paired with the sharpest 200mm prime lens on the planet has given me the best wild-life bird shots of my life.

    Wonderful video! I can definitely agree for the money M43 is amazing. From 2007 to 2015 I was purely a Canon DSLR and L series lens shooter. As nice as the gear was the bulk and weight was just a con overall. I decided to do some long term travel and ended up purchasing an OMD EM5 with the 14-42mm kit lens and the 45mm F1.8 and boy did that combo blow my mind. The image quality and more low key/portable nature had me taking way more shots than I did with the Canon kit. I was so impressed that in that moment I decided to jump ship and sell ALL of my Canon gear and enjoy what M43 had to offer.
    Fast forward to 2023 and though I own various other formats like FF and APSC. I still love my fairly extensive range of M43 kit like the Panasonic GH5, G9, G85, GX85, GM1, OMD EM10 IV, EM5 II and EM1 with about 8 different lenses. I'm pretty certain at this point I'll always have a M43 set up no matter what the future brings :)

    I use a Panasonic S5II as my main camera (mainly for video), but I still love to use my GH5 and Olympus lenses. I like the size compared to the larger body and lenses of the S5II. I use it when I am out and about for general purpose photography and paired with the Olympus 12-40, makes a great combo with that zoom range. I take my GH5 when I am going to museums, local events and I also use it for taking photos of wild plants, buildings and whatever I see when I am out and about. I also use it when taking macro shots for the increased DOF and the longer crop factor over FF and the size of the much smaller size of the Olympus 60mm macro lens. My macro setup on my S5II with the Sigma 105mm DG DN macro is much bigger and heavier and the focus motor is noisier than the Olympus, plus the Olympus has a longer equivalent focal length of 120mm which is useful sometimes.

    I like M43, more specifically GH series because they are just lighter compared to APSC and FF cameras when it comes to video work. For taking photos, heavier cameras is still okay but for video work where the camera has to be held for extended periods of time, any weight savings is great. I've on numerous occasions been tempted to get APSC or FF but always held back when I calculated the weight of camera and lens. For some brands, you will even have to add a gimbal because the IBIS is as good as Panasonic, and that means more weight.
    Another killer feature is the EX-teleconversion which gives you 1.4 or 2.7X crop. A 12-35mm lens can give you effectively 24 - 105mm focal length. Brilliant.
    The downside is subject isolation or background blur isn't going to be as much as APSC or FF. There are the f/1.7 zoom lens for subject isolation but those are just so heavy for video work compared to the 12-35, 12-60mm.
    Another downside is the rubber quality of Panasonic cameras suck. I've a few cameras where the rubber has melted off or worn off so badly you can see the shiny plastic surface of the interior body.

    Nice video - glad you still enfusing about the MFT platform.
    One thing you didn't mention is that MFT can be really adaptable if you own other kit - with lens adapters from the like of Viltrox, Commlite and Metabones letting you use lenses from other systems such as Canon EF including the smart adapters that let you use autofocus and aperture control.
    This lets you combine other lenses with the crop factor and get lenses you just couldn't get on a full frame without breaking the bank (and possibly your back) if they actually existed - I use a Sigma 150-600mm EF mount lens with a smart adapter to get a 300-1200mm FF equivalent lens which is just crazy long but unobtainable in full frame. Put in on a 0.71 smart focal reducer and you have about 210-850mm with an extra stop of light.
    I also go the other way - using a Sigma EF mount APS-C 8-16mm rectilinear on a 0.71x smart focal reducer giving me approximately a 5.5-11.5mm wide angle zoom equivalent to 11-23mm - at the bottom of this range is wider than the Loawa 7.5mm, but not as fast or as light.
    There's also the classic GH5 + Sigma 18-35mm f1.8 combo which can give a fast 25-50mm equivalent with a 0.71 metabones - as used by so many run and gun video makers (although for a more budget friendly option you could go with basically any MFT camera, a Viltrox EF-M2 smart speedbooster and a Sigma 17-50mm F2.8, not as fast but still good and a little bit more on the tele end being around 24-70mm ff equiv )

    I have been using M43 since 2013, when I switched from my Canon 60D. I don't think I'd still be into photography so much if I hadn't made the jump. The size makes it so easy to take a lot of gear anywhere. I can fit my GM1 in my pocket with a 20mm lens, or I can take my G100 and a couple of lenses in a reasonably small bag. Or, I can go full on and take my G9 and all of my lenses and still only need a relatively small back pack. Try that with Canon or Nikon.

    I fell in love with M4/3 in late 2012 when Olympus released the E-M5.
    A small and light weather-sealed body that promised IBIS so good you could leave the tripod at home? As a hiker, it felt like a system built for me.
    Fast-forward 11 years, I am still happily rocking an E-M5 Mk2, an E-M1 Mk2, and an E-M1X ... But, I must admit, the competition has caught up.
    Newer Sony, Nikon, and Canon offerings have been incredible, and some of the newer lenses have gotten so damn small, they're competing with M4/3 pretty closely.

    I have a very small camera bag and I have my Olympus Pen E-PL5 and the 17mm f2.8 25mm f1.7 and 45mm f1.8 and I've done engagement shoots super light kit when you want to go light and travel downtown by train or bus. Sometimes I will take my Olympus OMD E-M1ii and Olympus 12-40mm f2.8 and Olympus 75mm f1.8 and a flash. That's still a small kit compared to full frame but its a little on the heavy side.
    For engagement shoots and weddings I'll use Luminar to give some more bokeh but I only do a few photos. I don't have any luminar bokeh images on my site because I don't want clients to think all their photos will look like that was taken with a full frame f1.2 lens.

    I freely admit I was skeptical of micro four thirds about 4 years ago. I decided to take the plunge with a used panasonic g1 and a 25mm 1.7 lens. I tend to have G.A.S. so I traded it out and didn't have another micro four thirds for a few months. I got the em10 mark 1 and for some reason it didn't seem good for my photography. I now have an em5 mark 2 and I don't see myself getting rid of it. Still have apsc cameras and might get an old mirror less full frame but the em5mark 2 fills a void for my style of photography.

    Although my m43 cameras are hardly the latest models I still enjoy them. (A few GX8s and a GF6). The smaller cameras do not intimidate people so much and you can get shots that you couldn't with a larger camera. Sadly camera manufacturers have always reinvented lense mounts so we have to buy into a whole new system. I do have quite a variety of lenses, and a few adaptors for non native lenses. Sometimes it is just fun to buy a cheap lense to play with like my ridiculous telephoto which has never been great but is always fun.

    I love M43. I have a bag with my lunch, wallet, pens, a notebook...and a gx9 with a 85 mm (equiv) portrait lens. It's ridiculous. And also, a miracle: a tiny device that allows me to take pro grade photos anytime. On the other side, I'm also a pessimist, and I can see how the system is shrinking. All the brands are pushing for ff. The trend is unstopabble. We're condemned to cellphones and heavy equipment. The disappearance of the small-but powerful-and affordable camera will take an entire photographic style with it (popular, intimate, spontaneous), or at least, it will diminish it. (sorry for my grammar, english is not my 1st language).

    • @chrishowell5718
      @chrishowell5718 Рік тому

      Totally agree about the portability. Regarding system longevity, on the plus side, while 'obsolete' and 'dead' phones and laptops really don't work at all, there seems to be no particular reason that even if M4/3 'dies' as repeatedly predicted, our cameras won't continue to work just fine. Even if Panasonic go full frame only, the only reason I'm likely to trade in my GX8 in the foreseeable future is if something like a G9 or GH6 becomes available as a secondhand bargain.

  • @dhiral6678
    @dhiral6678 Рік тому

    The aperture also needs to be multiplied by 2 to get the full frame equivalent. So that Panasonic 25-50mm f1.7 lens shown towards the end is actually a 50-100mm f3.4 full frame equivalent. Hence this is the reason why micro four thirds lenses are smaller, if you took the same lens with the equivalent focal length and aperture for full frame then both lenses would be the same size. Tony Northrup did a good video highlighting this and I think this is important to highlight as it’s not mentioned a lot. A lot of people and even manufacturers will give the full frame equivalent focal length but conveniently forget to mention the full frame equivalent aperture.

    Quite like MFT, have a G9 which has more tools and abilities than I can really use. Camera a bit too big for my needs though. A lot of the Sony APSC and respective lenses are now quite small and very tempting, largely for the AF (G9 almost perfect that way in ok light). Just wish the Sony IBIS worked better. Perhaps an OM5 might be the ‘just right’ choice?

  • @ErraticSun
    @ErraticSun Рік тому

    Another great point about mft is it's one of the first mirrorless camera systems(maybe even the first, dunno). Which means there are more second hand offers for good lenses and they tend to be cheaper.
    I hope mft will be one of the first systems to introduce computational photography as well, like on pixel or iphone cameras. In theory it should be easier to implement on mft than on fullframe for the same reasons why it was easier to add 4k60p. Computational photography will help with narrower dynamic range and noise on high iso. If tiny phone sensors are able to produce good photos, imagine what mft sensor will be capable of!

  • @phaselead_dj
    @phaselead_dj Рік тому +2

    I'm currently using both MFT and FF. One reason why I'm still keeping my MFT system is the 35-100mm F2.8, and I didn't find an alternative of it in the FF market yet.
    Other than that, however, I don't find size, price, and weight advantage in MFT lenses anymore. The gap is shrinking very fast imo.
    Recently, there are tons of budget, compact, great performing FF lenses from Sigma, Tamron, and Samyang. Options in MFT world doesn't seem as appealing as they used to be imo.
    But I still love MFT so much and I want the companies could give more love to it.
    For Panasonic, I hope Panasonic to release newer versions of its GX9 and GX880 while keeping its price good just like they did to S5II. Maybe I'm hoping for too much, but GX9 was way too big and heavy for MFT even though I did love using it. After I got my hands on the A7C and X-E4, I realized GX9 didn't have any size and weight advantage. Last but not least, I wanna see new budget 3rd party lenses are all AF, not MF.

      I agree FF has got more compact at some focal lengths but if you want telephoto MFT still has a huge size/weight advantage. I have an equivalent of a 800mm telephoto kit that is still tiny in comparison with anything on FF. If I was mainly shooting portraits and wanted shallow depth of field then FF would be my choice every time. Both systems have distinct advantages that are dictated by physics and will never go away.

To bad Lumix have stopped making the GX9/GX80 style bodies, because for me to go with ha huge four thirds wouldn’t make sense being used to the smaller Fujifilm and Canon EOS-M cameras. Seems to me like the whole world want smaller system cameras, but both Panasonic, Canon and OM have stopped making them. The quality, size and weight of M4/3 are the best combination for me, particularly for travel. My next urban based trip will be G9 body, PL 9mm, PL12-60mm, 45-150mm and 20mm 1.7 for low light, and probably something to cover 99.9% of what I’ll need, and I wouldn’t in another system. It’s super compact and pretty lightweight considering it covers 18-300mm in full frame terms, though after a while in the 4/3 system you sort of stop thinking like that😊 The latest AI noise reduction software (DXO PR3, Lightroom) makes noise pretty much a non-issue too.

    SHARPNESS: Because rhe sensor is smaller, the 'edges' of the lens aren't being used to form the image. Most obviously from my point of view, if I use my Helios 58mm swirly-bokehtron lens on my GX8, it's functioning as a 116mm lens and the softer edges that i might see if I used it on a 35mm film camera don't fall on the sensor. Presumably the same thing applies with native m43 lens: convert an Oly 45mm for use on a 35mm sensor and you may find the sharpness tails off towards the edges that you never see otherwise.

What shocked me even more is the pricing. When researching I’ve found MFT lenses are a fraction of a cost compared to other systems. What’s your option on the LUMIX GX85? You are not alone. I too love MFT Love both Lumix and Olympus, adore Laowa and Sigma, but most of all is I love adapters and speedboosters and using my Nikkors and EF glass, and my Zeiss Nikon F mount glass. My latest addition is a Pentax 110 to MFT adapter so I can use Pentax 110 format lenses on the GH5 M2. What a wonderful coincidence that 110 format film is the same size as MFT and I can adapt the film lenses to digital. MFT is the most versatile format in existence.
    There is, however, one thing I absolutely HATE about MFT - the time I will need to wait until a GH7 is released and prices will fall enough on the GH6 that I can finally afford to get one.
