Thank you. I’m hear because I was yearning to hear Sweet Mountain (1972), and was frustrated that the UA-cam link I had found in 2021 was “404”….hate that. I’ll just have to hum it to myself. I think I was given a bootleg cassette of Spring (the honeys?) from a band mate of mine in about 1991. And it went off somewhere. Man did I want to cover that song. This is how I described it when I heard it again in ‘21: “I really relate to that sound. My kind of band. Like a casually dismantled Cocteau Twins track. With David Sylvain in the background messing around with Holger Czukay.” I think I heard Sigur Ros in 2002 and thought, “Someone managed it. I don’t need to try anymore.” I have an idea the a song’s spirit finds a way to live. Your historicity and musical knowledge is inspiring.
Happy to hear that you share my love of "Sweet Mountain," Kalonica! I LOVE your "casually dismantled Cocteau Twins..." description. It's very colorful and very apt! Thanks for the excellent feedback and for the kind words. It's much appreciated!
Great detail! I also read the Endless Wave book and was shocked that Rocky didn't deal at all with the 1977 airport tarmac Beach Boys blowout. The Smiley Smile forum members think the book was going to contain a load of dirt, but was then sanitized. I also love It's Like Heaven.
As poorly as Rocky comes off in his book, I hate to think what kind of picture the things he left out would have painted! Definitely a crazy and sad period for our Beach Boys and, sadly, having Rocky around only seemed to make matters worse. (I don't know about the tarmac blowout...not hard to imagine though!) Thanks for the comments and the info, Joel! (I love "It's Like Heaven" as well!)
@@thebeachboysbasementwithst6444 I research music produced by Brian outside the Beach Boys and his Solo career. I use the list from bellagio10452 as a guide. I made a playlist, if you are interested.
I was going to add to the Spring story by bringing up the album The Honey's in Ecstacy but in reading your comments I find you've already heard this album. Darn! I was hoping to be the first one to bring this to your attention. I'm not much of a collector or vinylaholic but I remember a couple decades ago spying this in a used record store. At the time I wouldn't have recognized anything about it except the store had put a little sticker on it. "Beach Boys wives". That and the other sticker that said $2.99 sold me. I must have gotten richer over time because in digging up the record from my version of the Beach Boys basement, I found a second copy still sealed and the sticker said $25. I never listened to it much as my vinyl gave way to CD equipment. I did take note there was a Brian Wilson song I had never heard of (You Brought It all on Yourself) and and another has a BW co writing credit, the great great song Go Away Boy. Apparently Go Away Boy has some history to it as it was known enough to be included on the well received BW tribute CD Caroline Now! by the Pearlfishers. I had a kind of a crazy relationship with the version by the Pearlfishers. I know you can choose to ignore gender in song lyrics but I took it in a sort of gay way .... and it works.
The "Beach Boys wives" sticker is a hoot! (One way to try to move an album!) I picked up my copy when it was new and was hoping for a cool (at the time) retro-new wave thing; like The Go-Gos with great harmonies. Like you, the couple of Brian Wilson writing credits also drew me in. I just gave the Pearlfishers version of "Go Away Boy" a listen based on your recommendation. I really like it! Great arrangement! I imagine that changing the gender would have been too distracting when "Boy" is so central to the lyric. It works! Thanks for letting me know about this version, Richard! Very cool!
Ive only just discovered your videos steve. Love them. I have cd reissue which came out in 1988 on Rhino (called Spring) and the vinyl reissue which came out in 1989 (on see for Miles Records) called American Spring (Spring plus). Its basically the original Spring album plus "Shyin away", "Fallin in love", "Its like heaven" and "Had to phone Ya".Chances are you already have these anyway. Such a beautiful album.
As I mentioned, The Spring/Honey's version is heavily disco-fied. It features most of the "cliches" of late 70s disco music. Still, the vocals are nice and the tune is undeniable!
Another solid video Steve. I just picked up Endless Wave, sounds like a wild read! By the way I showed David's son (a mutual friend on instagram) your last video about Spring and he said him and his father really enjoyed it!
Hi Matt! Thanks for passing the video along and glad it was enjoyed! Very cool! Please let me know what you think of "Endless Wave." It's a wild read, all right (some times quite sad and depressing too.) I can't say I really "enjoyed" it but it was eye-opening! Thanks again for the comments and the support!
"The Misadventures of Rocky!" Could make a great title! Sounds like Bullwinkle should be in there somewhere! Thanks for the comment WIlly! Always great to hear from you!
I usually check eBay or discogs for releases like this. I just took a look and, in the US, at least, it seems like copies are listed for around $100. If it were me, I'd keep an eye out at used record stores and, if they have them in your area, used record shows. I'll bet, if you keep an eye out and give it a little time, you can find a nice copy for much, much less. Alternatively, there's a CD reissue, which is also out-of-print, but used copies go for less than the original vinyl. Good hunting, Peter, and if you have a chance, please follow-up and let me know how it goes!
Great info. Thanks. Yeah, that Rocky book is interesting but he comes across as a hideous being. Your description of him is perfect. I don't think there were "ironic hipsters" in 1980, although the word has been around since the 1940's (as you probably know) :-)
You're probably right about "ironic hipsters" in 1980; at least as far as them buying Sean Cassidy albums. I think my idea of "hip irony" at that time would have been to dress like it was the 50s which is kind of close to what punk/new wave was doing anyway. Maybe Devo is what "hip irony" was in the late 70s/early 80s? (It's an interesting question!) Rocky comes across so badly in that book that I was a little reluctant to mention it. Undoubtedly an interesting, if unpleasant, read! Thankshear
@@thebeachboysbasementwithst6444 - Oh yeah, Devo were definitely pumpin' irony! I completely understand what you mean about Rocky. After I read his book, I found it hard to explain to friends how much my distaste for him had actually risen, even though beforehand the little I knew about him wasn't exactly complimentary! It blows my mind that someone would deliberately portray themselves in print in such a negative light. I guess that is also a testament to the chaps mind-level......
@@NOWtheband I totally agree about Rocky! Not only does he seem proud of things most other people would be ashamed of, he's still proud of them decades later when he wrote the book. I've long believed that if you don't look back on your past with at least a little sense of embarrassment, it means you really haven't learned anything in the meantime. Also "pumpin' irony" is a great phrase! Thanks, now!
How are they picking these singles? Thinking bout you and sweet mountain are the clear singles. Why would they pick a cover? It's pet sounds all over again. Sloop Jon B??? Wtf
Excellent question, Brendon! Picking the wrong track for the single seems to happen with alarming regularity. I agree that "Thinkin' 'Bout You" and "Sweet Mountain" are superior tracks. There are many times I'd love to know who chose the single and what the thinking was. This is definitely one of those times! Thanks for the feedback and for the excellent point, Brendon!
