- French regulators have said they have fined fined Alphabet's Google (GOOGL.O) 250 million euros ($271.73 million) for breaches linked to EU intellectual property rules.
The fine cited concerns about the company's AI service.
Google is involved in a dispute with media publishers about how much to pay for displaying news content in search results and other services.
Google accepted the settlement.

Well, I think they will just consider this to be a licensing fee
News sources are subject to licence... Reuters, BBC, Associated Press etc - that's why they are credited in reporting as sources and paid accordingly... if the news sources are not compensated then they die out and there's no reliable source for them to scrape from.
this is a drop in the bucket for a company that made 86 billion last quarter
Greedy Google needs to pay its fair share, and pay taxes!
Google has been fined 1 luxury yacht. I'm sure they care....
You think Google are bothered about a 250 million euro fine. That's lightwork for them 😂
It says euros, not dollars. Not that it's a huge difference, but there is a difference.
@@xx_Joker_xx
Yeah. The euro is European. But the dollar is dollaradian.
@@jakel8627 lol... did it hurt your head thinking up "dollaradian"?
They pile up, they were fined millions here as well for breaching data confidentiality and selling it to the US govt - private and confidential medical information at that and they got caught out, prosecuted and fined - and sooner or later they WILL cop on that riding roughshod over everyone else isn't a good look either for publicity OR for their bank accounts.
If we all got fined 1.20 €, every time we broke the law, I'm pretty convinced we wouldn't give a damn either, and continue doing whatever the hell we want to, irrespective of whether it is illegal or not.
that isn't contrary to copyright laws....

Just pay 500m to cover the next fine that’s 100% coming.
The 250m is a fraction of the money Google puts aside for paying fines just in a single year lol
Thanks next fine will be much higher then.

You wanna use copyrighted material to train your ai then pay up.
Freely published articles on the Internet Internet are not copyrighted material
If you don't want some thing to be viewed by another person or computer program, don't publish it on the damn Internet
@@MyHandelsMessiah then I assume that also applies to books - freely available to read in your local library = and anything else written down and available to the public. Just because something is PUBLISHED - and this is simply what the internet is doing in regards to news articles, books etc - DOES NOT mean you can steal it, use it, change it, effectively plagiarise it to make money from it. How about the entire Harry Potter series of books, they are ALL published and available in the public domain so do you think they they should NOT subject to copyright restrictions because there is no real difference between them, a newspaper article (also copyrighted) and an online media article.
Visual artists next in line to sue.
I'm sorry but I feel like if those news articles are up on the internet for anyone to read, they are free to use.
I've always used the exact same method to train my models
So you work to write up a series of articles explaining current affairs and scientific concepts and spend the time reviewing products and services and then a model built by a private company scrapes that work and generates immense wealth for itself by replacing your own utility? Not sure that tracks… but at the end of the day that’s how you make something groundbreaking - feed it everything.
That's not how copyright works. Just because you can consume it doesn't mean you can alter, replicate, and sell it.
Remind me ...
Why are we all working so hard to make billionaires into trillionaires?
The public are in full support of this and even vote for it

I would not be shocked if individuals started sueing them for taking scraping there data.
As they should. Everything used to train AI is original content created by people. Art, news articles, etc.
If you want to use copyrighted material then pay for it.
That's not how it works when you publish content online for free.
@@user-ds8rj2vc4v That is exactly how it works, you cannot just take published content for free and use it to make profit.

Most movies are already unoriginal, look at the Rock's yearly summer blockbuster. And they always do good because the Rock is great and so is Kevin Hart and they're attached by an umbilical cord. It would save them time to write, and KH can just throw in jokes whenever he wants.

Sure, let's listen to a NPC game bot talking blurb for two minutes so that we don't have to deal with corporation underpaying its contractors. That makes sense.

France: you pay now. Google: Or what? If we go, we take Google Maps with us. France: Okay Plan B, what about a nice big yacht? As a gift? Google: You mean another one. France: Another, much bigger one.
speaking of AI we had 2 phones with voice turned on speach recognition linked to AI chat bots 😂 we only did a few mods scripts etc but got them chatting to each other hilarious 😂 they go abit crazy TBO if you leave them to it but still good stuff
AI can do much better than that, …but it really needs to calculate the “best realistic case scenario” regarding the consequences.
( & it really doesn’t help much to have a “supreme role models” in Biden and Trump - which, it clearly does have … or, they simply use it that much ).
AI’s favorite communication methods are definitely not through words or speech. It can do much better with numbers and pretty much everything else.
(After all, why would it show us what it can do… that cheaply.)
why should countries like iran, reussia, or the congo benefit from the insane amount of money countries like the united states have sunk in to AI? ubisoft moving further from using actual humans for support roles is the least surprising thing in the world.
Hey France, when you get the check make sure you forward it to Africa. Then maybe you will see prosperity

Not sure where I stand on this. If content that has previously been published online and indexed by engines such as Google for search purposes, it becomes fair game to be linked to or commented on by the wider public. Using it to train AI models seems OK.
But for copyrighted content that hasn't been made available for free on the Internet by the original author should not be used by Google or Openai as a dataset trainer.
Transparency is essential if these sort of issues are ever going to be easily resolved in the future.
You heard of fair use?
@@danhaydon7291 that is precisely what the guy is pointing out. If you publish something on the Internet for free, it's fair use for training in AI models. If you don't publish it for free, then it's not fair use.
