Saying an AI can be "empathic" is like saying a forest can be empathic because, when you walk through it, you feel understood. Pure drivel by someone who should know better.

If AI has a purpose for humans, it is a tool. If the purpose is providing the illusion of empathy, then it still is a tool. Being able to reconnect with a dead person by interacting with a digital copy, is nothing more than supported human imagination. AI is faster, but cannot be better, as long as its code is written by code written by humans.

To be fair, he did say his background was in writing. I think its more a lousy job by BBC for bringing someone like him for the topics they were covering. Then again, maybe they couldn't find anyone who actually knows more about this (or willing to take part) at the time.
As for his optimism, I think there are people on both sides (though most prominent people remain either sceptical or pessimistic) and it's maybe nice to here from both perspectives. 8:40 the bottom of the screen reads "AI energy needs threaten sustainable future" all the while, the guest is speaking about how existing models are becoming able to be run on less energy-intensive devices, and spoke earlier about AI's potential to address basic research related to energy production. (Not to mention, machine learning is already being applied to reduce energy demand of data centers. And the next generation large-language-models are using intelligence to determine how much compute it actually needs to answer each question). Meanwhile, the status quo is threatening a sustainable future. Many data centers do not necessarily have to be close to population centers, we can locate them where there's abundant solar, wind, geothermal, and/or hydroelectric that we wouldn't otherwise use. Energy is not a rare thing on Earth, it's the source of energy we need to be concerned about.
