Heathkit HW-101 Part #7: All Done!

  • It took me long enough, but the repairs and restorations on the Heathkit HW-101 transceiver, SB-600 speaker, and HP-23 power supply are DONE! I had to make a choice on the colors to use, and there is no perfect choice that balances the desire to adhere to tradition and cost constraints.
I also test it on the air and make a couple of nice 40 meter QSO's.

I had an HW-101 and I sold it on ebay and bought an SB-102, can't wait to get it running. I love that ping when you key up these radios

I was given a HW-101 and matching Speaker/power supply around 2013. I had it on the bench for a while and never got around to it. I'm not sure what ever happened to it. I guess it got lost in a move we made around that time. I haven't even missed it till now. Shame on me. I enjoyed the series. Thanks for posting.

Excellent job! You make it look so easy. Believe me, I know it’s not! Listening to that QSO at the last reminded me of what a good rig this actually is. I built one in the late 70’s as a teenager and it was my primary rig until the early 90’s. I do remember it having some negetive quirks, those rubber bands for the tuning controls weren’t so good, but the vfo was very stable after a short warmup. Good enough for RTTY, which I used it for, where only the more expensive rigs of that era could do.

I've got nothing but respect for the effort you put into these restorations! Can still remember how much I admired a high school friend who'd assembled his own HW-101 and earned his Advanced ticket at age 16. His rig was just about the most magical thing I'd ever seen.

I must be a dedicated follower. I am 76 years old (70 of those as an Amateur Radio Operator WA5WRE), and wheelchair bound. I watched all 7 parts, and it only took 4 hours an 11 minutes. The WX here is constant rain. I was determined to see it through. Great job. Even as bad as it looked, it was still a great find. Just goes to show you, with a little determination and some hard work, it can become the treasure that it is. Great work.

Wow! I've been looking for this kind of a project. I have new and old Yaesus, Drakes, Kenwoods and various BC-radios but an old Heathkit restoration would be interesting. 73! OH7WV

Those upper/lower case parts look almost like they came straight out of the Heathkit box...it was always fun pulling kit parts out and Heath did a great job of packaging. Great work, enjoy the "new" radio! 73 - Dino KLØS

You did a wonderful job on that rig! It looked so disgusting when you first introduced it to us - I would have probably walked past that rig at the hamfest, not wanting to touch it. You were very brave to take that on, but you revealed it's beauty underneath all that crud! The final product is a real piece of art - and it sounds great, too! Nice job on that gem, both inside and out - it's beautiful!! // NØDET

My brother and I built an HW-101 back in the mid 70s. Looking at the internals of your radio brought back some memories. Built an HW-16 too. Hard to believe that was almost 50 years ago. Enjoyed your videos - nice job.
    Thanks.

Your Heathkit HW-101 project looks really good. With the choice of color, I would have done the same as you. $150 would have been also far too much for me.
I think the result of the paintwork is really impressive. The main thing is that the transceiver is working properly again.
mny 73 to you and your family and merry christmas too.

After several more hours of on-air time, it still passes the sniff test. Looking good so far.

Scotch Brite (the green type) works well to give the aluminum surface some 'tooth' for better paint adhesion. That's standard procedure when painting aluminum airplanes.

Enjoyed the series. I am starting to work on my HW22A that I built new in summer of 1967! It’s in pretty good shape as I have always kept it clean. It has low output but I can make QRP contacts.
Do you have any RF voltage measurements of the transmitter driver stage. I think yours is also a 12BY7.

😍 I can't believe you actually managed to resurrect that poor rig. Congrats with a great finished project! [4:20] Who on Earth paints an ALUMINUM case from the inside? Why, why would anyone do this? 🤯

Nice restoration. These Heath videos brought back fond memories of the SB-101 I had as a Novice/General. I noticed your s-meter not moving off zero during the QSO. Is that normal for the meter switch selection on the HW-101?
