I like the hi flow sponge filters, I use them in my 2 ft breeding tanks, I just put my order in for another ten they have been out of stock for a while 😊

So I know in theory powerheads are "worse" than air lift for undergravel filters because it's too fast of water flow and doesn't allow for as efficient of bacterial conversion or something, but I have never actually found that in person, I prefer powerheads for undergravel all the way.
Internal power filters usually have sponge and a space for carbon or something, but would a powerhead with a sponge on the intake side filter "worse" because the water flows faster through it?
I know with sumps and canister filters, you use a wider pore foam/sponge and bring it down to the higher density, allowing the sponge to act as a mechanical filter too to an extent, but the way your air lift sponge filters are set up the water will only flow through one sponge at a time, in parallel as opposed to series like a canister filter.
There is probably an optimal orientation for the sponges etc, but I haven't got a clue, because it's filtering in parallel.

Yeh 100% you could fully geek out. I just can't afford to run 50 powerheads electricity is my sole motivation

@@RumballsFishroom that's a REALLY good point. I need a better air pump, I am running a wavemaker for the MBBR in my sump, and that should absolutely be air driven. I Need a linear piston pump lol.
