  • In this video we go on location and test out the Teltonika RUT950 4G modem with the Poynting XPOL-2 directional antenna. The results were awesome!

    So, in this case, I had a case study conversation a while ago about questions for specific sites. So the site is in the Adelaide Hills. One of the initial questions is can we hope to get 5G here? And yes you can, but I think you will have to wait for 5G when it gets to a lower frequencies: the 850 GHz or 900 GHz. But for now the 3.8 GHz, maybe not. Now, just as a far as testing is concerned, the house currently uses an Nighthawk M2 which works okay, but the signal isn't great. So when there was northerly wind, when the weather changes then the signal drops. And this is really the case of everything is okay until there's something that doesn't happen as you want it to be. And that basically means you're on a threshold of good enough, and antenna will still, it won't solve that problem of the environment but it will give you away from that threshold, get you away from that threshold that basically when the wind happens you drop in signal quality but the antenna really puts you much higher. So then you stay connected. That's the whole thing here is getting you away from that fringe where things go from okay to not okay anymore. That's basically what happens when you add an external antenna to your 4G modem or 5G modem.
    The RUT950 modem works OK outside, but once we added the XPOL-2 antenna the download and upload speeds pretty much doubled. This is awesome for that area.

    XPOL-2 Rocks in Scotland 260Mb Down and 30Mb up in Rural area the land line is 7Mb down and 0,5Mb up !! Thanks to David his video's helped me choose which kit to buy !!

      Yes, every situation is different, and then the definition of rural is also quite different between people. Being an English 2nd language speaker myself, I consider rural as anything that's not in the slightly denser populated areas.

    Great video David, I am pretty sure you may be able to answer a question for me.
    I am in South West UK, been using 3g and 4g ever since it came out, always with Poynting antennas, problem I am facing now is quality of signal.
    I have wandered around the property testing speeds, best speeds are achieved some 40 metres from the house, easy enough to put up a small tower but how do I get the signal back to the house without losing quality? I had considered using a waterproof box for the 4g router, then Ethernet from there to the house, would that work?

      Yes, technically speaking the absolute best way would be to get the modem / router as close as possible to the external antenna. RF Cable losses start to play a major role in the SNR, so anything more than (let's say) 15 to 20m really does get a bit challenging. We see many people using WiFi for this range extending, but as you can imagine if it's your only connection that option is also flawed with risk. I would do what you think is worth doing. Use your modem router (or a simple Gateway with "only" Ethernet) and run the data cable to the main property where you can generate a WiFi network and multiple Ethernet connections via a switch.

      @@RFShop Many thanks, you would not believe the advice I got from one of our local experts, he is convinced line of sight doesn't make any difference, I showed him 10 results from a 50 metre area, he still doesn't believe it.
      Now to order in some Cat6a, that should do the trick.

    I personally wouldn't recommend an xpol for rural. Until the telcos upgrade their systems it's really pointless. Xpol is a multi band antenna where rural is usually only 700-800Mhz. Your Paying extra for cutting edge MIMO tech with incredible multi band rf engineering. I replaced a -168db SINR omni antenna 6dbi gain with a 19dbi parabolic grid antenna and recorded 16db SINR. While the teltonika routers are amazing, I would recommend a multi carrier load aggregation version with two out of phase b28 antennas if planning to spend this type of money. Granted there is a 700Mhz and soon to be 900mhz bands to use an xpol for. This still could be achieved by 2 standard antennas encompassing the similar bands.

      Every situation is different, and our goal is very much to have a generic simple solution that works for semi-rural. As can be seen from the measurements, there's not much more that needed to happen here. In this instance the modems already functioned without the antenna, just not great once inside. Going for a heavy-duty solution would work well, but was not required. In terms of cost, this was the cheapest / simplest solution.
