I finally finished watching this video, 9+ hours after you had recommended the 3 videos earlier with a lot of stop and pause in between to do so,e other stuff. So, I’ve watched all 3 videos. Wasn’t expecting to watch a 3+ hr automation vid, but I watched it anyway in knowing I’ll learn something and did learn quite a few things. So the video was really great and helpful. In the last 20 min of the video you pointed to why logic is written or in what kind in relation to the people at the plant who looks at it or job is to rest it for troubleshooting. I think a bit the same question I answered earlier on another vid as to which logic is better but a more complex answer. I find what you explained here in the vid to be true but again it’s for reasons that most people watching these vid don’t often think of is the reason. And again for my company which is a large global OEM to the power, oil and gas in the equipment system they supply with somewhere around 2500 to 6000 tags, a field engineer has to go commission the new system. Most if not all the tech only really know and understand Ladder Logic. I understand some Function Blocks because I watch vids like these, but for practical purposes I’ll stick to saying I only really understand Ladder Logic so not to get over my head. But that’s why my company only writes applications strictly in clear Ladder Logic so the field guy who needs to make edit changes in the field as needed understands the logic in Ladder Logic. As well if a junior guy has to go to the customers site to make some requested Logic changes, he can read the logic in ladder logic vs function block programming or structured text. Your also a very good teacher, your patient minded in explaining and demonstrating things and that can be gleamed from 3+ hours of video watching. I’m not a trained automation tech as in went to class. Most of what I have learned I learned in the field at plant sites with my Senoir Automation Engineer assisting and helping with gut a an old plc system often PLC5 or SLC and replacing it with ControlLogix. In so doing you learn an immense amount that just can’t be taught. In many things I learned or have in those processed I come to vids like yours to understand something more that I experience in the field to give more context of understanding and it’s helpful because I’ve experienced it without full understanding the first time. I have Studio 5000 with full license on my laptop. I know and understand how to use it, yet everything I learned in how to use, I’ve learned mostly from watching other people use it including my Senoir Automation Engineer. In watching this vid, I actually learned a few things and some reinforcement of things learned as well watching. Because you so patiently explained and showed a lot of the logic explanation with the sensor it helped me more understand things in a methodological way. It was also the very first time I ever saw structured text programming. I may not remember it all, but I’ve seen it. Thus it is helpful to convey in feedback that while your just thinking your demonstrating something in say Studio 5000, someone out there watching is also learning by just watching you do things, show and move around the software application. That is always a very helpful passive way many learn how to do things in the software, just watching as you demonstrate and solve a logic problem. Much appreciation on the video, it was quite helpful and time well spent watching.

If everything was auto configured what would they need guys like us for. I am not even close to your caliber that you but getting there. I would like a devicenet and controlnet (dirty words) tutorial.

if still available super interested! I am little confused still on differential vs single ended analog. We move jumpers on certain modules in order to incorporate it, but its always a during a down trouble shoot. Its the first thing we seem to do before we go out to the device itself. Older devices of course... also in regards to modbus/different means of communication, do you have prosoft communication videos anywhere?
I haven't covered the difference between isolated and single ended analog inputs. I'll put that on the list. With single ended analog inputs, all of the mA- points are connected together to the common terminal. With isolated, each one is exposed. The jumpers you see are typically on the isolated ones, jumping all the mA- points together.

The plc technician and I went to the panel and measured the current (which he explained how when measuring current, it has to be connected in loop and im glad you mentioned that in this video, really reinforced the concept!). The current was reading 21.7 mA and I wanted to know if you have videos where you talk about what to do if analog transmitter's current range reads below 4 or above 20 and how to go about it?

in the industry, it's called field power and buss powered. worked in few nut plants , you put a 250 ohm resistor in parallel with 4-20 and you get 1-5 volts. proportional, 1=4, 3=3,5=20!!

how come my properties look different in studio 5000, is it cause im using a different module? mine is a 1756-if16.... my engineering units are defaulted from 0% to 100%
In my Industry for equipment and systems which are Water Plant OEM and PCE custom designed plants we do tend to have quite a bit of HART enabled devices. That’s across most big projects. It’s not every field device, but it may be at around a dozen devices. Often it’s at the request of the customer or the company overall doing the entire plant site build and us doing the subcontract work to supply one part of a huge site with the Water Plant and tanks. So it can be a good think to just try and cover HART field devices.

I just recently discovered plc's and what plc operators get paid so now I'm studying everything plc. I have several issues though, the first being is it worth me even going down this path because I am an IT person but cannot get a decent job in IT because I have a criminal background, mostly just marijuana charges. Will I even be able to get a job doing this?
That is a tough place to be. This is actually on my list of things to talk about. You will struggle to get a job at some of the larger companies but there are huge opportunities at small to medium companies. You can't erase your past, but you can make your skills outshine them. Can I share your question?

Wow a lot of work to measure loop current. I just put my ammeter across the loop fuse and then pull it. Bumpless transfer.

How to determine the channel error? in siemens we have -32768 - wire break, +32767 - overflow, or we can use channel status variable?
There are tags that you can look at in Studio 5000, look in Local:X;I. I should do a video on that sometime. It is a great troubleshooting feature.

I don't think I have ever address that. Usually it means the transmitter is bad or the probe connected to it. That would make for a good video.

Can you put the Function blocks min and max Error codes into ladder logic or have it as a tag?
Yes, you should be able to find them in the tag browser then you can use MOV instructions to move settings in and out of them.

Each module has different defaults and even different resolutions.
