- Опубліковано 8 чер 2024
- We've talked to Turn 10 about the technological revamp behind Forza Motorsport and now it's time to share some first impressions of the preview code, running on both Xbox Series X and Series S consoles. Further optimisations will be in the final code, but for now, here's how the game looks and runs on both machines along with the various performance profiles available in each version - plus a much closer look at how on-track ray tracing actually works.

11:00 terrible. Reminds me of Project CARS (the first one).
1440p with 2 real-time RT enhancements at a solid 60fps is really darn impressive for console! I was actually expecting a top resolution of 1080p in this mode.
Yes. The idea that the consoles have magic hardware is getting so old but devs do continue to squeeze impressive things out of them. It can only bring more improvements to PC visuals as well in the long run.
Yea insomniac has been doing this day one on PS5 it's nice to see this feature actually make it on a Xbox first party game even if it is just a racing game
@@geeknproud321consoles hace magic optimization, and on pc we have none at all
@@i8balls I don't think Performance RT was a "Day 1" thing on Spider-Man Miles Morales or Remastered - it came later via a patch.
But, I agree, Insomniac has been doing amazing things and has made Performance RT a staple of its games ever since - definitely a top-notch developer!
Even still, I think RT Reflections is the only RT feature they've used so far on console (please correct me if I am wrong on this one as I don't want to discredit Insomniac in any way).
I am glad that Xbox Game Studios developers are taking notice of this though and implementing similar features for its own games.
The future is bright in gaming graphics for both Xbox and PlayStation and I can't wait to see more as we finally shed the shackles of last-gen!
Cope harder.
I wish there was another channel like this but for physics engine and game mechanics…
DF usually touches on it if it's a core aspect of the game. They did it with Starfield.
You wont like it, there's alot sim racer channel, when they review games like Forza, they have to mention the word "Arcade" every 10 seconds.
That’s an interesting opportunity for someone…
Try Boomstickgaming for game machanics
Super gt or hoki hoshi both played the preview and talk a lot about how it feels
Damn the side by side with FM7 really makes the visual improvements apparent
What I’ve noticed with a lot of current gen based games is that whenever look back at the previous gen instalments, I’m like “what?”.
The current gen is how I remembered last gen being.
I wonder what graphics and performance will be like by the end of this gen though as this is so far having a ton of unoptimisable releases.
Bro the previous games looked better what are you talking about.
We are at the limitations of the hardware already. The refreshes (and Radeon GPU themselves in general) don't look like big upgrades. Look forward to next gen maybe having the capability of decent ray tracing 5 years from now.
Maybe another ps360 end gen with games like bf4, crysis 3, dragon age inqui running at 20fps average.
@@Navi_xoo art direction>>>>>>>fidelity
yep especially racing games they never really improve gen to gen because they where already looking good on a xbox 360, so mostly what they improve is texture resolutions, pixel resolutions, more car shaders and a few improvements here and there.. if drive club had a native 4k 60 patch and a few improvements it can be released as a nextgen game and it will wipe the floor with any racing game out there
I bet no one noticed the Ridge Racer music playing in the background! Not only do we receive an incredible breakdown but top notch music to accompany it. I feel like the music is always well chosen in this videos. Love it!
11:00 personally I don't think those compromises are worth it just for the sake of having raytraced reflections in game. The lack of proper roughness and specular occlusion basically throw away the huge realism of PBR materials. They always talk about how their car paint shader is super complex and realistic, then they just spoil it with those sharp and shiny reflections.
Fully agree. It was obvious even on the 2022 reveal trailer.
rt is a gimmick. Especially reflections. Noone cares
true
Well true and seeing the comparison with GT7 (well not in Gameplay but still 30 fps) there solution looks just so much more coherent. Still hoping that GT7 might find it's way to PC in the future
You realise the rough reflections are still handled by cubemaps right? They're not just getting rid of rough reflections entirely.
Raytracing is just used for the clearcoat layer which should be sharp anyway.
Cubemap reflections for the same smooth reflections has been sharp before too, it's just so low res that it didn't look it.
The issues with the raytracing in this game aren't great but it's still better than without it. For example, a lack of occlusion making a reflection of a reflection darker is still better than reflecting a bright sky in a cubemap
I’m so glad Digital Foundry had done a new Forza Motorsport video, it feels like it has been almost a decade since the game was last shown some love.
Online only for singleplayer career mode in FM8 is basically a profound wrongness.
I hope they let the PC version go way past the console versions. Let us use all the RT effects during gameplay.
I want full ray tracing CP77 the way, no cut corners.
I hope so too but Microsoft doesn't really seem to go much beyond what their console settings offer. Sony on the other hand go beyond their console settings offer more ray tracing.
I feel Microsoft should be leading the pack with their games over anyone else since they own DX12 when it comes to next gen PC features.
@@hannibalb8276wtf you talking about? Give examples please? You mean redfall and starfield, maybe hifi rush? 😂😂😂
@terranigma4027 how did you come to that conclusion? Starfield on ultra is above the consoles and it can go past 30fps, Halo Infinite has ray-tracing on pc but not on consoles.
They are capping multiplayer to 60FPS even on PC for "fairness"
Holy crap. Within the first few minutes of this video I was blown away by the visuals. I love Forza Horizon but this will be interesting to play as it reminds me of the good old days of Project Gotham Racing on the OG Xbox. Great times in the early days of Xbox Live.
Pause at 10:37. The graphics are *chef’s kiss*

Not into racers but wow, some moments of this looked almost photorealistic.
7 minute mark still nothing on driving. That's wild.
15:30 I remember they saying they created shared material library for interior materials like plastic, leather, etc.
That new leather is looking like black polystyrene foam though.
Love the RR playlist you have playing in the background, John. A man after my own heart :)
Was just about to comment the same thing!
The "hazy" effect, or washed out colours and the low contrast, low saturation are the bane of modern games. They all have that distinct signature. I dont like this
I prefer this to the oversaturated Forza of the past
pissfilter of the current gen :(
You can use a reshade

I think it makes it look more realistic like it’s actual footage of a race, over saturation makes it look cartoonish
In anticipation for this game, i got myself my first force feedback wheel with a seperate shifter. Time to see what ive been missing out on!
Im planning on getting a proper wheel as well. The last wheel i had was the microsoft one on the 360 and it was uncomfortable to use. Even worst was that i was significantly faster with a controller.
But this time around i will get a proper setup. Besides if nothing else dirt 2.0 and ac is good with a wheel.
@@dnegel9546well Dirt Rally 2 at the very least still do better than FM8.
One more thing, the light bleed at 3:26 needs to be corrected in the 2023 view.
I revisted FM7 like a year or so ago & that game looked and performed amwzingly on my Series X. Forza Motorsport just looks spectacular! Like the difference is literally night & day and really being undersold here.
Thanks for pointing some of these things out. The one thing that I could not unsee was the whole wheel thing. How the wheels look jagged, how they do this pop in and out lighting animation from take off, how they look flat, how they don't look the same when spinning on track vs cut scenes. And how lots not all, but lots of the cars wheels look exactly the same spinning out on track. I'm telling you when you see a CTR go by or you pass it and you look at the wheels you'd think to yourself that can't be the factory wheels. Also I expect better when it comes too car models being as though this game has been in the making for a long time and the cars should be the star of the show. Hopefully these issues will be fixed upon final relase. Personally I will be playing with RT off, so that means performance mode.
I feel that Turn 10 has always lacked with modelling the blur you see with spinning wheels and the look of tail and head lights, two things that Polyphony has excelled at since the GT3 days. But to me these things don’t matter that much, as long as the racing’s good.
Yes.
Kinda wish he mentioned more about the physics and tire models and less about graphics.
For Those Who are Interested the Ost used in 1st part it's
Sueno del Mar - Ridge Racer 6 (X360)
I think your the first person to show off the replay cameras. Thank you.
Sueno del Mar from Ridge Racer 6 - I like it, John.
The new Forza Motorsport has a file (if you go to Manage Games & Add-ons) which implements higher resolution tracks. You might have this not installed and that is why it looks muddier.
Nice commentary. I'm looking forward to playing this project. All the best.
I am thrilled that it is only October 1st and the video will be released on the 10th.
I couldn't resist watching the video again, and I have already ordered my new wheel!
RTAO debug mode would make for a very interesting looking game with some tweaks
It feels natural right? I love this RT feature. Sadly it is not used that much by game devs, due to the bad reputation SSAO introduced by previous Ambient Occlusion iterations. But the bad visuals of SSAO is because it doesn't take occluded geometry into account. But ray traced AO does!
Really looking forward to this.
Awesome video and also nice that youre using ridge racer music!!
Love this. Thanks John and DF.
The car body just looks like a mirror at this point because of RT race, instead of actual paint surfaces
Already looking forward to the GT vs FM video in november, hopefully with some insight into how both franchises have been influencing each other over in recent years.
Looking forward to playing?
I can already tell GT7 looks much better technically. Especially lighting wise. But Forza has always been flashier which a lot of people will see as better. It'll never look as beautiful or realistic IMO. I'm pretty biased though ngl
Don't know, GT7 is a cross gen while FM is going to be full current gen. FM MUST be better from technical perspective from every point of view, they had additional 1.5 years to work on it and no constraints from previous gen compatibility.
@@RiccardoGrc That has literally nothing to do with which game will look better. There are plenty of cross gen games that look a million times better than ones that aren't. Look at Horizon 2, Cyberpunk, GT7, Metro Exodus enhanced edition, etc. and then look games like Returnal, deathloop, redfall, or starfield. Cross gen blows those games completely out of the water graphically. Not to mention games like Death Stranding and the last of us part 2 that either only got patches or ports to current gen and yet still are among the best looking games there are. Plus most of the games I mentioned also look better than Demon's Souls remake, and Ratchet and Clank and those are the best looking current gen only games. That's just top of my head but it proves the point. Being cross gen doesn't mean inferior graphics. That's a ridiculous assumption.
@hugostiglitzracing866 gt7 doesn't look better at all , you're just someone who doesn't have an xbox and wants to hate for no reason , gt7 has terrible blocky environments and no ray tracing,
Will you be doing a video on Cities: Skylines 2? Always enjoy the in-depth analysis!
Nice looking game but it’s pretty astounding how much better GT7 still looks compared to this honestly..
And all that while being cross gen with PS4
After GT7 with VR2 others racing games like this born old :\
Hoping we'll see an unlocked/120hz mode down the line! Even a 40hz mode with RT
40hz mode?
John! thank God you're back!
The game most definitely look good, but as subjective as it can be, I can't stand that white haze, it destroy the visuals to the point I would even wonder if I didn't push the brightness at like +50% by mistake.
If you go out in the middle of the day on a hot summer day with no clouds and sun shining in full force it kind of is like that though.
u on the point
This one wasn't on my radar at all, but damn those graphics. Will keep a close eye on this now 👌
Something that was really immersive with Forza 7 was the cloud shadows that moved across the landscape. It was one of the first games to natively support that. Looks like its been lost in the new game sadly.
Yeah Forza 7 looks amazing and they said it was only using 70% of the One X's power but they can't even make a game look better after all this time on a much more powerful console.
@@outdoorsjoeFM7 looks bland next to the new FM.
I've heard there are car model comparisons incoming, can't wait for that
So which mode do I select when I play? Performance or regular? And we can play at midnight on October 4th?
Why does the new lighting look so washed out it looks dull an unappealing
They explain it in there recent videos.
yes. looks bad.
I was watching a video of Forza Motorsport gameplay and my son’s walked behind me and thought I was watching footage from a real life car show. 🤯 This game looks incredible. This will be the first time I get a driving seat and a wheel for this game. It’s the most advanced and best looking I’ve ever seen hit the console.
Forza Horizon is already the best open world arcade racer.
Forza Motorsport is looking like the best race tack simulator.
I didn’t care for GT7 at all and it looks terrible in chase cam. So that game is old news and irrelevant to me. I don’t care to even hear about it. I’m ready for FORZA.
That's what mid day sun looks like? In hdr you can expect very strong contrast between dark shadows and the "washed out" full daylight
If you drive at times of day where the sun is coming in at more of an angle it will look more saturized too
@@BOSSSHAWN seat and wheel to play from chase cam? you are a joke :D
Every time DF publishes a video with Ridge Racer music, no matter the racing game on display, five years are added to my life expectancy.
Have you tried it with a high quality Wheel and Pedals? not logitech
or Thrustmaster, but a Podium or Cammus etc?
The depth, detail, and explanation you go into is by far the best of any of the vids i have watched ( ive wathed a bunch) . I subbed just because of that, might not watch other stuff, but I WILL watch every forza vid from you. Thank you for your time and dedication!
Agree.
I"ll go with Performance mode. Thanks guys. Great as always.
This game looks blurry asf compared to older Forza games. It's like if someone's not wearing their glasses.
I kinda wish DF would give more insight detail as to how the playability is affected, it's easy to crunch numbers and say this or that looks blurry at 300x zoom or whatever, but when racing in a game, can the average person actually notice? Game looks great regardless.
4:14 the wheels completely stopped rotating twice under braking, but the car doesn't behave like the wheels are locked up, they should smoke the tires, and make the car unable to turn. It's either a visual glitch, or the physics is very off. And I don't know if John was playing with assists, if he didn't turn off ABS completely, lockup shouldn't have happened in the first place.
Can you possibly start uploading your videos in HDR? I know you’re more than capable because you have done it in the past. I never feel like I am actually getting a good idea of what a game will look like on my HDR capable display when you upload everything in SDR. Otherwise, I love the content.
It`s great to see that the new forza runs at a minimum of 1080p in RT performance mode on series X, since I play on a 1080p monitor, so I know which mode I`ll be using
Agree, I'm on a 1080p Plasma.
Crazy you had to buy a Series X and still settle for 1080P 😢
@@spenny2cents I have a 1080p screen, so why would I give a shit about 4k, when 4k60 on console is a lie anyway? I bought the series x for the 60 fps mode on games (alot of games have a 60 fps mode on series X, but not on the S), for the extra storage, and so I wouldn`t need to pull out my series S on the rare occasion I want to play one of the small handfull of games I own on disk.
The triangle crowds are my favorite
Grip, from the ridge racer OST. What a great choice!!
Can't wait for this. This is the game I've been waiting for all year. 8 more days.

@@bossmaiden5979 - I have GT7. I like many of the GT games (especially 2 and 4) but I have preferred Forza over GT for quite some time. If they brought GT to PC I'd certainly pick it up and play it more, but my PC will make the new Forza look considerably better than GT does on console.
@@Kryptic1046same here
@@bossmaiden5979as a racing fan with a 4090 and a ps5 I definitely prefer Forza over GT7 but both are really good games. GT just has such bland presentation and way worse AI in my opinion. But I do think GT has a slightly better online community in terms of polite racers who don’t create as many turn 1 cluster pucks
GT has always looked and felt more fun to drive. I remember hating the first 3 forza's cause the visuals felt so crayon like or something and the cards just turned oddly.
This is the second Forza video I've seen where you mention the soundtrack; I would say one good thing about no licensed music is that it avoids the problem of the game of being delisted after a few years due to rights issues, like the Horizon games have been.
Will still do due to the, cars
yeah it doesn't avoid the problem since the problem is the car licenses
Now the game can be delisted in 5 years instead of 4 years!
Wow side by side with fm7 make is really eye opening for how far things have progressed
4:20 - neat! a Silent Hill Pyramid Head cameo!
4:34 wheel spin animation is no glitch...it's just something that turn 10 still can't get right. Despite the time they have had.😢 I mean come on already did anyone at Turn 10 say nothing about this??
Agree this goes for all Forza games including Horizon. Once the car gets to 12-15mph the wheel animation goes horribly wrong and looks odd.
finally someone see that , thats since horizon 5
Built from the ground up, still has stuff like that from the first games.
still feels like theres an issue with the black levels. everything looks grey.
Looks amazing but how is the handling?
My favorite Ridge Racer Revolution song at the end!!!
They need to remove that haze. Now I cant unsee it.
Did anyone notice that the tires on the STI at 4:14 just stopped spinning for a couple of moments?
Yeah, John started talking about a glitch at that point and I was thinking it must be the wheels not spinning!
Braked too hard and locked wheels up, you can see a hint of smoke behind the car. It's weird that rear wheels are also locking up, maybe they messed with the brake balance.
Locking wheels under braking, it just looks weird because the wheels transition from being 2D to 3D when they stop spinning.
What's the best steering wheel and seat 💺 set for this game & the Xbox series X? I wonder can you play with the Vr Headset also.
The RT reflections look unnatural to me. Cars aren't mirrors. Apart from that though, can't wait to play.
Turn 10, if you're watching please give us the option to turn off TAA. I would rather have FSR 2 as an AA method and deal with it's shortcomings than look up ghostly and blurry images. Or give us the option to run TAA, FSR 2.0 Ultra Quality, or 4X MSAA. If you could do 4X MSAA on Xbox 1 X in 4K, you can do on the XSX. I watched the video again on my G1 OLED just make sure it wasn't my LG 32 inch 1440P monitor making the game look blurry. It looked blurry in full 4K.

Why are so many games coming out with intentionally raised black levels?!? Can we all petition for an OLED/HDR calibration consortium or alliance between all these studios?
Defo not a fan of the washed out colour palette personally, the strong colours and vibrancy of Gran Turismo is much better imho, but will see when the game comes out what the colour settings are like
About the "washed" color in mugello, I drove in circuits IRL and between 13h and 16h the sun can make the track look this bright. In my opinion it looks really reallistic.
It will depend of course if in the final game it looks the same while a cloudy sky or raining, but for what I've seen so far I really like it
Really waiting to play this next month! 🚗
I love how John keeps Ridger Racer alive in his racing related videos. Bandai Namco should be ashamed for keeping the series buried away truly since PS3 launch. We don't talk about Ridger Racer Unbounded. It doesn't exist.
I've been replaying the Vita version with resolution mods and all tracks. It's actually a good game with full content available. Can't wait for vita emulation to unlock 60fps. The soundtrack is fantastic as you'd hope.
I could say the same for Project Gotham Racing, especially after the 4th game which was sublime.
Ridge Racer Type 4 was my first racing game ever back on the OG PlayStation and I still look back at it sometimes. I loved this game!
I wish we could get a PS5 ridge racer and a new resistance.
ridge racer on the og-playstation blew me away back then, and the psp-version was -imho- a head-turner for sony's gaming handheld as well.
Cannot freaking wait to crank this up on my PC 😊 XSX will do fine (and even my XSS) in the living room and bedroom, but I'm going to enjoy my PCs game play a Ton
MP will still be capped at 60FPS
Good now I know exactly where everything is in your apartment
Glad to see they have worked on the aliasing issue. It was very annoying to me on previous iterations.
Agree.
Which of the three performance modes do you recommend for series x.?
Forza 7 looks so much sharper, FM8 lookin blurry as hell. Thanks for calling it out. PC version better have a volumetric fog + TAA off option.
That "hazy" look is what makes the game feel more real and less like a cartoon. It's one of the tricks that GT has done so well over the years. Even when their lighting overall kinda looks a bit ish (looking at you GT3), that slightly desaturated tone made it feel better
I remember Forza 4 being hazy, and that is probably the best Forza of all time. So let's hope this one is good.
I hate it. Every modern game has this stupid effect. It looks awful, it's not good lighting, it's terrible. I prefer to actually see more than 50 meters around me, and forza 7 looks better. The hazy look is stupid, I don't know why every damn modern game has this stupid effect.
@@Skumtomten1 you are confusing the hazy layer for coloring. Indeed the hazy effect blocks way too much. All so they can boost fps
The issue is the strength of that hazy look. It’s way too overpowering and it completely washes away the colours of everything. Idc if that’s realistic, it looks terrible and destroys the overall presentation.
@JoShUa95160 starfield has crush in both blacks (grays actually since in-game cannot produce blacks) and spectral highlights getting bloomed to the sun in some cases. The game does not even support HDR natively. That is a completely different ball park compared to the washed-out realistic, atmospheric look that we see here. At least it can be adjusted and FM actually supports HDR. Starfield not supporting HDR and not having brightness sliders on release is just nuts.
I think 1080p moments in order to have two different forms of RT is the correct choice.
Watching this, it still feels like the first time I played forza on xbox whatever back then.
Thinking of Forza Horizon I actually really like Playground's real-time cube maps on the cars is actually really good. It sucks it doesn't reflect other cars, but it's still a very visually consistent tech which matters so much more to me personally.
Ha! Yeah, as I'm always watching the road ahead I don't think I've ever even noticed the cars don't reflect each other. Very performant and good looking game.
No it's not, because your reflection you see on your car is placed on every single car on the track. So when you drive by one of the yellow checkpoint flags you see that yellow flag on every single car in front of you, at the same time you see cars passing these flags in front of you and they don't reflect anything at all (because they have your reflection), this is an extremely jarring experience once you have seen it.
This is an issue with this tech in general (you have the same happening in GT Sport for example).
Anything less than full RT is just faking the effects. Just because it looks nice, mean it behaves like it does in reality. We've been through this before with bump mapping, normal maps, euphoria physics, ssr, and more, lighting and more.
@@PrussianBlu3games look better but they not really advancing. I find physics and complex open world simulation as a more productive use of hardware than raytracing.
If we could have arkham knight or RDR2 graphics on last gen, why not let that be the bar and now push for games that are better for reasons beyond their visuals
@@Lumilicious honestly after playing hundreds of hours of several Horizon games I've never noticed this. Sorry it seems to be affecting you more than others. But to me the visual presentation has still been very good.
