I like the way you carried out and explained this experiment. None of the options were wrong, they just give you more choices. Timing and whether the hair is wet or dry should be part of formulating.
This gave me what I needed because I only use shades eq to deposit color to my hair since my hair always becomes slightly damaged with a Sally’s bought dye (obviously) and I just wanted a tone to the color I already have and I didn’t want to deepen it too much. I got my hair slightly damp and let it process for 20 minutes and it’s literally what I wanted 😭.
What color is your hair? I’m naturally brown, had full highlights, then decided to go darker as my hair was damaged by highlights and other factors. I’m doing research of possibly switching from Matrix toner (alkaline) and was wanting to switch to acidic toner.
I’m not sure if your question was directed at me…I’m about a level 7. Shades EQ Gloss is acidic….theres an entire playlist here on my channel. Thanks for watching.
@@theworldofcraig Thank you! I was asking @dianna, but I really appreciate your response, I just found your channel and I will explore your videos:) Do you use the eq on yourself at all?
Hi Vanessa, thanks for watching. I have swatches that before - interestingly it isn’t much deeper than the 10 minute that’s included in the video. I used the *10 minute damp hair* as that is (generally) the most popular toning application method. The presence of water in the hair “dilutes” the direct dye element of Shades EQ and means that the oxidative part won’t be deposited in the same way as on dry hair. Both are good and perfectly valid ways of using the line…they just give different results and longevity to the result.
Brilliant Craig…the difference is so noticeable on the dry and makes the faff of drying to apply all the more worth while 👏🏼thanks for sharing your wonderful knowledge 😊 and hope your wearing your storm trooper helmet tonight 😉😃 😘x
Goodness me, so kind and supportive…as always. I know drying off adds time but it does give a different result. You know me well…I have it on now typing this, ha. 👨🏻🙏🏻✨
High Margaret, thanks for watching. The salon I work out of isn’t a Redken “door” - we use SEQG (and I have used all of the other lines…although Color Fusion hasn’t been in the U.K. for a long, long time) but we don’t stock the other lines. Would you want a straight comparison video, an overview of the brands colour offering?
Not sure if you already mentioned this but using an NB on dry, naturally white or gray hair will colour it to the point that it does not really fade out anymore and acts like a permament, except that it is much easier to lift with lightener of course :)
Hi there, thanks for watching. Yes, I’ve mentioned something like that in many videos - it really depends on the hair type/texture etc etc. I have clients that I’ve found (over the 25 years I’ve used SEQG) that I can use the N’s on and get a “blend”, then others NB applied as above, only lasts 5 shampoos. It really, as with most hair colour, depends on the canvas.
Is there possibly a difference of how the developer affects the dry versus the damp hair... with that I mean is it possible that putting on developer on dry hair can be more harmful versus damp hair? I always see one is using a low % developer and it's said that it just add color , but does that mean that this doesn't affect the hair negatively at all? (I've dyed my 'fine' hair 1-2 shades lighter, no bleach. No excessive heat styling and I use R-two products schwarzkopf)
All hair colour that uses a developer has some effect on the hair. That said Shades EQ Gloss uses a very low volume and is acidic (as is hair/skin) so there is no “damage”. It’s really about the “energy” exchange when it comes to hair colour and damage. Applying any hair colour to damp hair dilutes the pigment…not the effect it might have on hairs structure.
Hi Craig! I am addicted to your videos, so fun to watch! I have a question, I think that dry hair wins, so: Can Shades EQ be applied on dirty hair (2-3 days unwashed), and then shampoo/rinse afterwards ? Should it it be applied to shampooed and conditioned hair that has been dried? Should it be applied to shampooed hair that has been dried but NOT conditioned, (and condition it after the toner)? The problem comes when you have very dried/porous hair, or maybe curly dry hair that is a mess if not conditioned. Sometimes feels easier on wet hair or dirty hair. What is your recommendation if I want to tone crazy hair in a dry state? Thank you!!
Hi Veronica, thanks for watching and your kind words. SEQG can be applied to “dirty” hair, 2-3 days is fine - if there was a LOT of wax (as in coated completely) I may shampoo first. If you did shampoo the hair first, don’t condition…some can create a barrier.
Hello Craig...I have a question. I bleached my hair to level 7/8, so it is still quite orange...I want to bleach it further to level 10 and I am wondering if you would recomend to bleach it with 20 vol. or maybe 13 volume would do the job...i would mix 20 vol. and 7 vol. to get 13,5 vol. to be exact. I was dark my whole life and i also colored my hair with black box dye a year ago. This is my first time going blonde...Thanks for the answer and thanks for the videos you do. You are one of the few that i really trust here on this platform with everything related to hair...
Hi Poppy, thanks for watching and your very kind words. It’s tricky for me to give you peroxide advice without seeing your hair in person - that said, if your hair isn’t compromised (I would suggest using K18 mask with any bleaching…I use it on all my clients) perhaps use 20vol but at a ratio of 1:3. This will give you the lift but the ratio “dilutes” the “strength” of the bleach. Whilst I’m an advocate for home colour, I’m not so much when it comes to bleaching, it’s hard to get a good result on your own - perhaps get someone to give you a hand? I would also suggest applying to the back sections first - split your hair into two, across the top of the head - that way you can attempt to take the back off first when it’s ready. Good luck.
Thanks Craig. I used 20. vol. As you sugested And it worked beautifully...toner did a great job also I used igora vibrance 9,5-1 and clear 0-00 in equal parts and mixed with developer 1:1 ratio...thanks so much for the advice...
Hi Craig- I see for longer lasting time, applying to dry hair is best. But for highlight, rinse then tone, would you personally use shades eq on damp hair at the bowl or dry the hair then apply the toner? Thanks
Hi Wendy. So 90% of the time I dry the hair off completely and then apply….it makes so much difference. There are many, many examples in my full process tutorials, that are all in a playlist here on my channel. Thanks for watching.
wow!!! Hi Craig, new subscriber here. If I lift to only level 7 can I use this tone ? Its a beautiful chestnut. would it work to make it look beige ? and if not, would it work on lifting to level 8 first? I just don't5 like lifting passing the level seven. Its so hard on the hair. Thanks so much in advance!!!
Hi Bela, thanks for watching and for your support. I’m afraid it wouldn’t - the underlying pigment at a level 7 is orange/yellow….my swatches were white before colouring.
@@charocflores I’m afraid you won’t get a result like the swatches in the video without lifting higher first. The NA’s are very, very cool - they will “cancel” out more warmth but as cool results absorb light (rather than reflect) it will look considerably darker.
@@theworldofcraig I see, I don't mind dark blond or light brown. I will test a strand of hair, see if I like it. Thanks so much for your tips. I know it could lighten up a bit after few washes. Anyways I appreciate your prompt response.
It may be a silly question, but are there brassy brown ( level 6ish) swatches anywhere in the universe? I have been cutting my own hair for " swatches", and u can imagine, that is becoming a bit obnoxious now. Thought I would ask anyway, 😂 thanx!
Hi there Not necessarily but it could be a little deeper. There’s a common perception that hair colour “stops” working, it doesn’t but it won’t get a lot darker. If there hair is very porous it could continue to deepen.

My concern is that my hair is so dry and porous, I'll need double the product, to get through my entire head. My hair soaks everything up.
You would for sure need more product - but as I mention is many of my videos, you do get maximum tonal deposit and the results will last longer.
Hey my shades eq came unsealed!? Is that normal??
The small bottles aren’t sealed - to my knowledge it’s only the bottles of clear and processing solution that come sealed.
Can you add 7nb on naturally dark roots level 2 or 3?
Hi Rose, thanks for watching. You sure can - Shades EQ doesn’t lift, so it’ll make the hair shine bit you won’t “see” the tone so much.

Yes, mainly. 80% of folks that use Shades EQ Gloss apply it to damp hair - it’s not wrong, just different.
Why not do 20 minutes on damp hair?
You sure could…but it’s the water that dilutes the pigment (and longevity) of the result.
