Painting Rocks on 25 Year Old Watercolor Paper! Is it still good?

- Who remembers Fabriano Uno Watercolor Paper? I've had this in my stash for over 20 years! I am not sure when it was discontinued or why, there really is not a lot of info about this paper online. I bought several reams of this paper back in the summer of 1999 I think on a good sale (maybe because it was being discontinued) and I quite liked it but not as much as Arches but it was still a good paper. Anyway, I was going through an old filing cabinet and found a bunch of paper I tore down from big sheets and organized in a file folder and decided to use those to make some sketchbooks. I wondered if the sizing was OK since it has lived in my basement for decades so I decided to soak it and do a painting! Here is the full-length, real-time tutorial, grab your paints and paint along!

I definitely prefer real time videos and usually don't watch time-lapse. I like hearing your thought process and listening to you chat. Please keep making them! I'm going to try these rocks.
Awesome, thank you!
When I watch you paint, I always learn to be persistent in adding the subtle details. I love it.
I'm so glad!
Oooh Lindsay please teach us your way of sketchbook making! I know there's so many videos out there but I learn the best from you ❤❤
Maybe I will:)
You are an inspiration and excellent teacher. Have watched your videos for a long time. Thanks for this one on granulation. Never knew about it. I have learned so much from you!
Thanks 😊
I learned a lot from this video. I love drawing rocks but don't always get all the subtle details in. I have watched it twice and will be watching it over and over again! Thanks so much! 💖
Glad it was helpful!
I love watching you work with the granulating paint. I love your sky on this one too. Have a good weekend.
Thank you! You too!
Oh yayy, Lindsay gets out her M Graham palette. Love this painting, so amazing. Happy February.
Thank you! You too!
I really love that paint and paper, such a nice painting! Thanks Lindsay❤
You are so welcome!
Hi, Lindsay. Thank you for your video. Happy Valentine's day.🎉.
Same to you!
You help me to make less stressful rocks as in this video. Thanks!
Rock on! No stress needed:)
Always enjoy the real time tutorials, I learn so much.
Glad to hear it!
These looks wonderful, I love it ☺☺☺
Thanks so much 😊
Happy belated Valentine's, I love the long videos!
Glad you like them!
I always enjoy, and learn when you do landscape paintings! Thank you for doing one, and explaining so much as you paint!😉🤗
You are welcome!
This was wonderful Lindsay! I learned something new too.. spray the back of the paper to prevent buckling! Mind blown 🤯 Going to have to try this and share with my daughter! Thank you, and I too love rocks! ❤️
Thanks!
Love the real time tutorials. So valuable to see and hear the whole process. I was just using the MaimeriBlu potters pink today. I needed a natural texture pink on the nose of a Highland cow illustration. I have that reservoir mimik brush and that thing makes fine lines for miles. Thanks Lindsay 💜
Sweet!
I love it when you do landscapes
Thanks!
I am so excited to get outside in warmer weather to paint and explore pretty places! It'll be here before we know it!
Can't wait! Let's hike and paint Sears island when it gets warm!
@@thefrugalcrafter I would love to!
@@karenclarkcreations it's a date!
Love it! Love these tutorials! ❤❤❤
Glad you like them!
Beautiful painting , it turned out great , I usually hold back on using black but Im going to get out of my comfort zone and try it , ha 🤭
Enjoy 😉
Another great tutorial. Thank you
You are so welcome!
Those rocks look amazing. I think the granulation really makes them look so good.
I think so too!
Fun video! Thanks so much for sharing❤
Thanks for watching!
Gorgeous painting. Thank you for sharing with us. You must have bought that paper before you were born :D
Hahaha 😆
So pretty! Thank you for the video! I really love the spattering w/toothbrush!
You are so welcome!
Hullo Lindsay, I am amazed at how your rocks seem to come out so wonderfully! I realize that you are not going to post a failure but unless you practice your never going to be better, so I am guessing that you are painting a lot of rocks? Maybe it is the Maine coastline? Thank you for sharing this as well as all of your ideas. I have watercolor papers that are much older than 25 years old, but it is all stored in the spare bedroom in larger portfolios. Now I have experienced bad sizing before and I “rescued” it from the trash by simply not using it with watercolor! I used it for drawings and I used it for some classes I gave at our local senior center. Free paper is always appreciated 😊
This is a lovely video Lindsay, thank you.
Rocks are my favorite landscape subject. I can't get enough!
so glad to see you paint ,i really want to paint rocks under water in a river ,very hard to find videos ,i found a few ,ill just have to try it my self ,love you
Good luck!
I just ordered a reservoir liner. I'm really looking forward to playing with it. Perfect for these rocks!
Nice!
Hi, Lindsey! Enjoy your channel. Your projects spark my creative expression throughout my drawing school, DIY decorating, and fun watercolor activities! Thx for your generosity as you share what you do. The videos are top notch!
I have a question as you prepped this paper pulled from your stash of sheet papers:
How does the process you used in this video before 8:43 of wetting the back of your watercolor paper help prevent buckling when you don't tape paper to your surface?
If you would comment, it would be most appreciated as I often work on papers that can't really be taped. Some of those papers I use are recycled pages in old journals I converted to daily use with fluid art play -- with gesso and watercolor medium, gloss, etc. -- to scratch journals and experiment only journals.
I probably could wet the backs of these journal pages without too much of a problem as long as I gently dried them with a paper towel sandwich and a low setting wind tunnel from my craft hair dryer. Could also use heating gun, but the coatings on these journal pages can emit toxic fumes if heated too high, or even at lower temperatures. So, I have to be cautious; correct?
Also, could you comment on use of a drywall sandwich also used to cure and fully dry dried to the touch fluid art sheets. This suggestion came my way from a FB group I've lost touch with back during the Pandemic. Thx for any thoughts on the subject of drying acrylics and watercolor work, and living with such work in a humid studio space.
It works by evening out the tension on the paper. You could place a thin cutting mat in your journal behind your page you are osinting on if you want to try it. I have not heard of the drywall sandwich method.
In otherwords fun with granulating colours. Thankyou I had fun with potters pink in a rocky landscape in my new first attempt sketch book.
Nice!
Love it
I still have some watercolor paper from the 70’s. A block,of Winsor and Newton, and a block of Arches. (I just generally don’t like using a block, I guess! ) I last used them a few years ago and they were both still fine.
That's great!
Lindsay- please give me more information on the special brushes you used. Brand name, name of brush and where did you buy it??? (I couldn’t find it on your Amazon site). Thank you. J
Hey Lindsay what other paint would be comparable to MG paint? Thanks
I think any professional brand would be compatible but if you want the honey based quality try sennelier.
❤❤❤
What brand is that angled brush with the acrylic handle?
Cotman by winsor newton

Lindsay, I wasn't sure how to reach you except by posting a comment here. I have tried to log in to my Teachable account but my password did not work. When I tried resetting it through the email I was sent it continued to say that the link was invalid. Do you have any idea what I need to do. Thank you.
It says reset token is invalid.
Please email me at artstudiosofbangor@yahoo.com
Something you can try is to clear your browser history/cookies and reboot your computer. Usually that dies the trick when you get hung up logging in.
How would you have known the sizing was bad? - Kristin
you can tell when you paint on it, the paint would have sunk in rather than spread out and you would see unpleasant dark patches on the paper.
Yea, another rock video! I love them. Also love how you’re using your old supplies, going with your new theme for the year, right? Or did you decide to do something else? Anyway, I love the way you do rocks!
Yes! Using my favorites! Thank you!
