Because he's the composer of this piece and can do with it what he wants? The whole point of jazz is creation and improvisation. Few people go to these concerts to hear a note for note redention of the original recording, if that's what you want just play the cd. Live music should be different and push things over the top.
Al is one of the most precise players ever - and that would not in itself mean too much EXCEPT, his music is TREMENDOUS!!!!
