Today 29 September 2023, I came to this spectacular video, due Al di Meola( one of my GUITAR HEORES) , suffered a heart misfunction and THANK GOD is recovering in a hosptial . But I wish him complete health to listen his WONDERFUL ARTISTRY
..in my personal Vision, the canadians was blessed with the best concert of Mr. Al Di Meola....musicians of high quality, including my compatriot Ze Renato, a great singer of the ex-vocal group Boca Livre..and Kei Akagi, a God of the keyboards....the arrangement line of this concert was refined, amazing.......really fantastic..
Saw this exact band and tour Live at the Coach House in San Juan Capisatrano, CA in 1987. I appreciate this music even more in 2024. Besides Jazz, I love Brazilian music. Brazilian music is on other level as jazz. Many great artists.
Some very beautiful and ethereal music was played during this era of Al Dimeola. HIs rapid-fire muting during the breakdown section of Maraba emulates the heels of a flamenco dancer/his melodic and rhythmic sensibilities are matched by few !!!###
00:00 - Enigma of Desire 13:20 - Traces of a tear 21:35 - Maraba 28:00 - Song To The Pharaoh Kings 42:03 - Song With A View 52:07 - Egyptian Danza/Race With The Devil (on Spanish highway)
Dear Krisztina, Thank you for uploading this unique video. Also thank your for identifying the titles. As the official versions of this concert (One Night In Montreal - CD & DVD) has mistitled tracks.
Wow, slammin' jammin'! Those were the days and the earlier period when he was touring the Electric Tour and the Tour De Force album with Jan Hammer is some of the best performances I've ever witnessed. Then the acoustic tour with Paco and McLaughlin is from another realm. Great stuff!
Gerald Wright I didn't realize until very recently, though, that there was so much tension between Al and John. I knew there was some, it was evident in the latter tour of the early 90's and not so much in the one of the late 70's early 80's. Just recently someone else on YT linked Al's facebook page and he's talking about that riff and how he had Ovation put in a custom, secret volume control button near the strap button because McLaughlin insisted Al sign a contract that he wouldn't reach over to the standard volume control with his right hand and raise the volume since his Ovation was plugged in and Paco and John were only miced up with their nylons. Imagine that!? The way Al talks about John you can clearly see there's no love lost there and this thing with John is well known with other musicians as well. Al calls him "disrespectful". Too bad, but most of the really good stuff is between Paco and Al while McLaughlin's stuff never interested me as much TBH.
GoMiGman That's interesting... I have heard that Al can be very egotistical himself. Hes the bomb and his acclaim is well deserved, but I do think he likes to steal the show a bit sometimes... He's insanely good, better than Paco and John imo, but John and Paco are still amazing in their own right. At the end of the day they're all probably quite into themselves and such conflicts will always arise in such realms of artistic expression.
Ravi Maharaj Ravi, you are spot on with every single thing you said. Imagine 3 of the best being put together to perform. At least this isn't sports where the competitive nature take over completely and one must be the eventual victor. At least this is subjective in so many ways but there is still this tremendous, inner competitive drive that forces these behaviors. Frankly, if I was Al, I would've done nothing less even though I love Paco and so did he, but screw McLaughlin let him eat shit for l are and go for being the best and loudest and the most heard! The only way to do it and if the others done like it? Well, eat me! :)
I saw this tour in WI (Milwaukee?) - had a huge impact on me. The crowd was mostly uptight jazz snobs unfortunately, but Al didn't let that stop him from tearing the roof off the place. Thanks Al.
virtuosismo puro, digitación, enganches, fugas, sentimiento, y uno puede subirse a una nota hacerse mas fino, mas fino, estirarse hasta para viajar a un color final.
1. Enigma of Desire 2. Traces of a tear 3. Maraba 4. Song To The Pharaoh Kings 5. Song With A View 6. Egyptian Danza/Race With The Devil (on Spanish highway)
En este video el percusionista no es Roger Squitero, sino Gamaliel "Gumbi" Ortiz. Aunque, en la gira sí participó Roger: V.gr. Al Di Meola Project live in East Berlin, 1988.
Al DiMeola is awesome, as always, but Kei Akagi is pretty much up to the challenge! God, he's good! the show could have used a better set of pipes than the one Al employed here, though.
I love this version of traces of a tear. Mixes the cielo y tierra version and the soaring through a dream synth version for those who only like one or the other, Al shows how he jams on both.
Best performance of Song To The Pharaoh Kings by far! Even the other performances of it from this tour doesn't come close to the energy the entire band has in the perdormace! Also kinda unrelated: 53:12 just tickles me the right way
a total departure from his early electric career in 1985, (cielo e terra) he did all tracks himself--a masterpiece! i was a relatively new fan in 1985,and it took about 3 listens to sort of let it sink in...and it's powerful stuff! he's playin' this verbatim! amazing!
di meola is great. very fast and technical. so is gambale. the difference is gambale has more soul in my opinion, this piano player is unbelievably great.
13:31 how is al making his guitar sound like that? It’s like a woodwind instrument what was he using then? It’s so of the time and very nostalgic sounding in nature
Great player! I remember seeing this when it aired on Bravo or PBS around '88-'89. Totally phenomenal player. And he plays with perfect playing posture. The height of the guitar and the thick strap make it easier to keep the proper ergonomic posture. This is something more players should do.

Shocked concert.... by far one the best musicians in the human history
Al has the fastest pick I've ever seen live. Awe-inspiring guitarist.
Awesomeness 8:50

As usual, Al rips on guitar. Beautiful phrasing in his solos. His bands are so tight.

This is an absolutely mind blowing performance here!! So very heartwarming Thank You.

Since 1991, when I first saw it, think about what my life would be without this concert?
Song With A View is beyond beautiful. What a special performance by all.
Kei Akagi on Song to the Pharaoh Kings made me cry - astonishing talent!
Al’s cowbell playing is tight, too! So surprised to see him playing that nasty part.
Great player al all great musicians on that stage
Al's technique is impeccable
Song To The Pharaoh Kings - Unrealistically strong work!

Dude...I saw that Al/Paco/John show in about 1985. Another realm, indeed!

I saw this tour in WI (Milwaukee?) - had a huge impact on me. The crowd was mostly uptight jazz snobs unfortunately, but Al didn't let that stop him from tearing the roof off the place. Thanks Al.

An inspired concert from Di Meola's heyday as a composer.

I was there in Tenerife. And I was also there 3 years after. No more to be said.Despite the fact he is brilliant,PACO DE LUCIA WAS THE NUMBER ONE.

+Jim E Just opened up the menu. Sorry, but thanks for posting!
13:31 how is al making his guitar sound like that? It’s like a woodwind instrument what was he using then? It’s so of the time and very nostalgic sounding in nature
Lol 0:20 From some cheesy cop show intro music to Al's kick ass emotionally driven Ciello e Terra.
Song To The Pharaoh Kings
Anyone know of any concert where he performs "Lady of Rome, Sister of Brazil"? Love that song but it seems to go under the radar
Technically Awsome
DID KEY AKAGI PLAY WITH MILES DAVIS BY THAT TIME ALSO?
The percussionist is Gumbi Ortiz, damnit!
A Latin Male who sings , instead of yelling , nice !
He's not spanish
Vocalist is Brazilian.
Great player! I remember seeing this when it aired on Bravo or PBS around '88-'89. Totally phenomenal player. And he plays with perfect playing posture. The height of the guitar and the thick strap make it easier to keep the proper ergonomic posture. This is something more players should do.
nice upload. saw al several times during this era. great stuff.
one quick correction, that's gumbi ortiz on percussion.
The drummer looks a bit like Dave Weckl to me....
He and Tommy are interchangable in the Chick community. ;)
A nice little nod to Dwayne Allman and Eric Clapton with a Layla quote at about 50:20
The 36 thumbs down... get a life
