If your buying 1 at say 20k my rule of thumb is have half the money you payed for it put away for inevitable fixes. Running cost alone will empty finances quickly. Rod bearing wear mostly comes from ignoring the proper warm up of the engine and especially the oil temp and correct servicing… oil is the life blood , proper quality oil of the correct grade changed regularly (~5000 miles) and making sure no high rpm’s until the oil has reached proper working temps. People just jump in and thrash and douse the correct oil due to cost and or lack of changes… basically misuse.

You can thank people who shop based on annual maintenance cost of vehicles and the extreme left who have pushed large companies towards carbon credit issues and try and hold these companies accountable for any waste oil the vehicle produces during it's life on top of it's consumption. It is far cheaper to change that oil every 5k miles then it is to repair any of the major mechanical issues that not changing it can cause. The inside of an engine should look like new and not varnished. Varnish is directly related to the oil breaking down it is that simple.

@@jbee9713 Of course NEW cars are great bud, but it's the long lasting QUALITY that makes them legend.
As a past BMW owner I can attest to them being GARBAGE in the 2nd hand, even fixing them myself the parts were overpriced, over engineered, and always under delivered.
Cars shouldn't be "consumable" like BMW makes them. Lasts for 80-100k miles and then they are junk.
This video is even more proof to the fact BMW knowing sets their cars up for failure. Make the rod bearings too tight, recommend a thicker oil so it can't lubricate properly, and recommend 19,000 mile oil changes (which is completely absurd). It shouldn't take aftermarket support to make a vehicle do what it was intended to do.

    • @Shift4g

@@noirceur_ I don't know how many high performance (and I mean race caliber) engines you've been around, but NONE of them are reliable when used for their intended purpose, or when not used as intended. The mistake BMW made was packing such a thing into a consumer friendly package that people believed would last like something with 5 moving parts. The sad fact still is you can't have things that push the technical envelope and last too.
That being said, I agree that cars (and everything else we buy if you are honest) is designed to be more and more of a consumable and only engineered to last so long on purpose.

Hopefully not! MrVanos does do things right mind, so not worried there, but that's not to sad MADFord didn't either.

I love the idea of this car if i had a workshop and a collection saw a guy had one with an old Porsche gt3 and a clio v6 but for me personally a w211 m156 estate is always gonna be the winner.. again if you can find one! Also as per colour i’d say leave it alone it’s lovely 😊 great content as always 👍

We've got an acid yellow '04 Clio V6 Ph2 in the garage, and alltough it's really not much faster than the 182 cups (because it beeing around 300 kg heavier) , the sound and the handling is what makes that car so special!
When we stop at gasstations or carmeets, lot's of people ask me what bodykit it is, most think it's a liberty walk kit for a renault clio 🤣...
Except enthiousiasts, not many people know about these cars, thats what i like... my whole collection are cars like that lol

Interesting as this, it feels somewhat contrived. We now know DT bought a ‘project’ car, one with a reputation for fragility, but it comes from a BMW expert who had already done most of the wok it needed. That rather diminishes the ‘project’ aspect. Then DT go back to the seller and he finishes the work needed. So we are left with a car that is apparently all sorted, as Mr Vanos put it, so what is left to do? A wrap? A few other frilly bits? Surely the idea of a project car is that it needs a lot of work, and that is what is interesting.

Yes, this is a bit misleading, when I clicked the video after seeing "cheap M5" I expected some 150k mile shed with no maintenance, as the saying goes, there is nothing more expensive than a cheap BMW.
I did not expect to see a somewhat pristine example with the major issues ALREADY sorted by one of the leading BMW engine builders in the UK.

Great video, is there any long term fix for the injectors? Understand the key issue is the lack of serviceable fuel filter which may lead to the injectors needing replaced again?

The 19,000 mile BMW oil change interval is because most of these type of cars are purchased as a lease and lease companies want long service intervals and low service costs. Madness.

Truly epic cars. The V10 was the pinnacle of BMW. An exotic masterpiece of an engine stuffed into a pretty normal car. This is what made BMW M always so great. Now all we get is hopped up variations of pedestrian engines in the M cars, and even the dual clutch transmissions are gone. They might be better cars than ever before, but they have no soul. Nothing is TRULY bespoke with BMW anymore.
