I am a little confused here. Is putting another diode after a bridge rectifier an effective way?
I think it would increase the resistance in the circuit causing some energy loss due to lower efficiency.

Correct but maximum possible loss because of that diode is going to be only 3.5 watts for a 150W power supply. Also, its necessary to prevent reverse flow of current from a battery to the indicator LED.
