- Several examples of the slide whistle are shown with advice on how to build one for yourself. Several design variations that are shown, these can be made out of PVC pipe, bamboo, scrap wood, even a carrot. While the materials and designs may vary, ultimately they all behave the same way. Part two will examine the physics of the slide whistle and the behavior of sound associated with open versus closed tubes.
Amazing stuff! My daughter is non verbal, Autism & is a sensory seeker. She came across a water toy last summer called Splash Fun, Pipeline Pumper by Jaru. They were at our local Christmas Tree shop but they closed down by the end of the summer. What attracted her to them was the fact they made a specific whistling sound when used without water. I ordered five of them from an out of state company in California, but only two of the five did the sound she liked. She has been asking for them the last months since the store closed down & thankfully I was able to contact the company via phone, they were kind enough to test them for me to see if they made the whistle sound, 4 of the 9 in fact did. Of course I placed an online order to have the 4 shipped for her Christmas wish.. I just a wonder why some didn't make the same sound, they all appeared to have the same identical characteristics, same measurements, it was driving me up the wall trying to figure out why the other three didn't produce the sound. The only thing I think I figured out was that the orange ones that didn't make that sound seemed to have a slightly wider tube when sliding the handle stick in & out. Also the hole at the end where the water squirts out, seemed to not have the same amount of the plastic ring going inward as much as the others. I even dried out most of the clear grease, but still no whistle sound. It wasn't like a regular whistle sound, more like a bird type sound. When the handle is pulled out and twisted about or back in etc.. I would even have made some for her, but I don't have the tools etc for that. Appreciate your videos very educational.
The best science teacher.
Yes
I get so excited when i see a Bruce Yeany video in my subsciptions
*camera changes to reveal super tall Beaker* Me: Ofcourse, only Bruce Yeany.
I found your channel a couple days ago and I love it! I wish I had had a science teacher like you.
Bruce is the MacGyver of science class, making whistles out of god knows what lol. Your content is amazing!
That translucent one makes a brilliant sound. Love it! Love the tutorial too - thankyou
glad you liked them, my favorite is the bamboo
Only one thing to say: *THAT WORKS PRETTY GOOD*
Love your videos Bruce! Merry Christmas!
the best how to/ tutorial video on youtube channel that i know so far
Bruce comin in with the drill saw
I recently started watching your videos and I just wanted to say that you are awesome
Wonderful job Bruce, thanks a lot!
Merry Christmas Mr. Yeany! thanks for the interesting videos
Great video Bruce, I will try this with my students. I think it would make for a great interdisciplinary unit between music and science.
good job bruce keep it up
Super instructional video. Thanks Bruce.
Can’t wait for part 2!
Looking forward to doing part 2 butI have some other videos in the works before I get back to this
Super cool dude. I really liked how you seem to enjoy it. Cuz I enjoyed it
I love this channel, definitely doesn’t have enough views
I have a bamboo patch that survives sub-zero temperatures--gotta try some whistles! Thanks for the crucial details, like the need for a sharp edge, etc.
Hi Slater, the bamboo is my favorite, of course the carrot was fun too
You speak of science to come but you have just shown me a science I've never seen.
You sir are amazing!
Keep up the nice work.
Merry Christmas, Bruce!
Thank you, and merry Christmas to you
The carrot whistle is the best!
love your clip. it gain me more knowledge
Nice. Reminds me of all the great teachers I had growing up. Thanks
The foam plug is a good tip, the way it is so easily shaped and press fit.
Hy Bruce!
Nice !
Greetings from Austria!
I wish you and your Class a Sweet Christmas and a Happy new Year!
TheGamer
Thank you sir. I appretiate your insight.
Great video!
Multiple tones crazy sound
Congratulations for the exciting and smart instructive video! This square woodden slide whistle with marked notes on , patented over a church organ pipe which I think you say it is connerrfcial ,has the distinctive behavior compared to the rest that it keeps stable the same 1st harmonic when making the sound, which is valuable to me. Where can I find this particular slide whistle please?
Thank you, the piece you are asking about is available at several online science related outlets such as Sargent Welsh. Do a search for "Organ pipe". Also available on Amazon
great presentation can you tell me where to find the square wood slide whistle? thanks so much
That was great. I'm going to make one for my son for Christmas, he's in the army let's see if we can get him court marshalled .
Beautiful video
I'd suggest using either an fft or spectrogram phone app to 'see' the tones.
good idea, thanks
Wow, very good.
Why there's no really low slide flutes? It will be bigger but it can be made like a trombone
The physics of sound! :)
You just breeze through the 'what and how' of what actually makes the whistle whistle!
loved it
If you close the top of the pipe with that piece of foam how would the air reach to the smart hole
#small hole
I admire you
I got the giggles [2:31-3:12] at the actions and wording when he said, "and I immerse it down in that as I'm blowing..." sorry LOL but he would be a fun guy to take to a party
I never really understood how the whistle actually works
The pipe is simple as determining the length of the stationary wave inside, but i never really got how the whistle and the air pressure fit into this
Hi Luiz, the video wasgetting too long so I decided to break it into two parts. I hope to explain what you are asking in part 2
Thanks! I'm looking forward for part 2 to get some closure into my what-are-flutes-and-how-does-that-even-work thingy haha
Watching Bruce cut the pipe with that saw made my heart race. Gotta be careful where your hand is when you're cutting Bruce.
Thanks zesT, I think the angle of the camera made it look like the blade was closer to my hand than it really was but your right I do need to be careful.
Wow you reply fast! I loved the video and I'm planning on using some PVC lying around my house to make one of my own :)
Not always so fast, I just happened to be online at the moment . Good to hear you're going to try it, they are a lot of fun for you and annoying to everyone else.
Exactly lol
Where is Part 2?
I wish someone made a drone slide wistle, so you can tune the notes by ear but with the drone for reference.
So cuteeeeeee
Wheres The Second Part??? I can't find it..please provide me it's link
I had taken it down, I had used some background music in it for examples that was copyrighted
@@YeanyScience Sir Don't You Have the Original Video, in which you haven't added the Background Music? If you don't have it, pleeaase make a New One For the Same Topic...Pleease sir I'm Dying to Know the Science....Love You Sir..♥️♥️💕💯💯
I wish I would have u as my teacher in school
Hi Bruce Yeany I'm a young scientist and your videos have helped my a lot with my research and work I would love it if you might give me a shout out of one of your videos thank you
sooooooooo geuteeeee
Ake a spiral rubber cylinder maybe flute holes
😊😊😊
5:09 random Mac error sound?
Hi Jack, I didn't notice that until you mentioned it, I have no idea
Shoutout to Andrew Huang for the carrot whistle.
And you will ask why...
*BECAUSE SCIENCE*
Normal Mexican food
Like maybe a recorder with spiral
Will your videos always be this long, or is just a big topic?
I hope not, most of my videos are shorter ranging from 2 minutes to under 10. my goal is under 8. When I show how to make something it always takes more time
Kind of like a rubber drill bit
Hi Bruce,
Made several of your designs. I followed your method precisely, but NONE of them work. I suspect there is something critical in the manufacture that you may have stumbled on without realising. I am UK based and collect my plastic pipe from a local supplier. For example; The wall thickness may be different to the material you use. I am an engineer so capable of following instructions and making items exactly.
If you read this, please suggest the variable which I should look at to solve the problem.
Many thanks, Paul
Having similar issue, although yet to try all methods. Did you find a way to make it work?
There is a comedy/musical group from Argentina that build their own instruments called "Les Luthiers". In the following clip you'll see several of those "informal instruments", in particular two related with this video: the "alt pipe" and the "bass pipe", which are, essentially, slide whistles :)

BTW, being a physicists and science teacher myself I have to say: THANKS FOR YOUR VIDEOS! I love ALL of them!
Interesante cuanto menos
Elsword Ediciones Jumper ~ interesting how much less?
If you put a mouthpiece with a reed onto the carrot you can make it into a clarinet or an oboe.
so thats how they get thoes sounds on cartoons

Had a spiral as a kid I'm sure
good science but at 9:37 he needs some serious saw tutoring haha
Yu da
i wish we were friends
12:05 eh eh eh

“And it keeps getting longer”
Screws? Drills? Saws? That's almost like AvE! But language is somewhat different...🤔
Dude. . . . . @9:34
try a really big cucumber
Wæææ
H
9:38 omg. This could get bloody! Why are you sawing over your hand? 😂 ffs
Wtf am i watching. I need sleep
ashley sefton you r watching a guy make a flute out of carrots.
I always find my way back to this channel around 3-4am
Omg same here this is weirdly entertaining at 2am hahaha
Nikolai Shriver your not the only one
9:35 This is not how to use a saw! Use a bench vise pls =(
Serious cutting hazard right there
Omg I actually didn't notice that he could saw his hand lol
Only men should be teachers.
How many female teachers were as motivated and gifted as this guy in your school?
Not every men was dedicated but literally 0 female teachers were dedicated and passionate like this guy
don trump just because you had unmotivating female teachers, does not mean that all female teachers are unmotivating. I've had very passionate and dedicated female teachers as well. The gender makes no difference. Also, your stance about them doesn't fuel their passion for teaching.
don trump there r only 2 genders
I only had two, maybe three, really good male teachers K-12, and many, many incredible female teachers. Gender has NOTHING to do with teaching ability. You'd have to be stupid to believe otherwise.
Eemeli Saarelainen i agree, personal experience does not equate to reality...the same way YOUR experience doesnt reflect reality.
The truth is female teachers are as average worse than male teachers. They mark their female students higher and thermale students lower.
They promote the drugging of youngboys and see them as as "deffective girls".
Oh, and lets not forget most of the pedofiles nowadays are female teachers ( i know your beloved tv wont dare show this, but you are smart enough to do a google search, arent you?)
Sam Bilotti i totally agree, mate.
Dont know where you read/thought i didnt
I get so excited when i see a Bruce Yeany video in my subsciptions
I am working on some new videos and will start posting again soon
