  • Jenny Tschiesche is back with the second instalment of our Air Frying 101.
This video, Jenny explains the simple calculation you can do to easily convert traditional oven cooking times and temperatures to be cooked in an Air Fryer instead.
    WHEN COOKING FROM FRESH:
Take 20°C off of the typical oven temperature.
Reduce the typical oven time by 20-25%.
    For example:
If the oven instruction says 180°C for 25mins, then your Air Fryer should be set to 160°C for 20mins.
    WHEN COOKING FROM FROZEN:
Keep the suggested oven temperature the same.
Reduce the typical oven time by 50%.
    For example:
If the oven instruction says: 180°C for 20mins, then your Air Fryer should be set at 180°C for 10mins

My frozen sausage says cook for 25mins at 180c do I class that as fresh or frozen as it a frozen cooking instruction on the packet?

How does this apply for Fan convection oven times (as often both are listed on food items)? Is this calculation just for non-fan timings?

Is this across all settings? Bake, roast, airfry etc? If I’m making a cake and use bake setting do I apply that formula for time and temp? Or should I use airfry setting and reduce the recipe times by that formula ?

I’m interested to know this too 😊

the 'Bake' setting is simply a pre-set time and temp. So, use the instructions in the video and the Air Fry function. With cakes you sometimes need to cover the top with some foil as the top can cook quicker due to the force of the air current.

Hi Jenny, can I just confirm 2 things please.
    Firstly 20% of 180 is 144 not 160
Secondly how can food cook quicker if it's frozen rather than fresh, surely it will take longer regardless of which appliance we're using?
Surely you mean 50% longer, hence if cooking time is 25 minutes it should take about 13 minutes instead of 10 minutes, am I correct

I was thinking exactly the same thing. The sums do noy add up. Moving to another video as there is no reply to your question.

@@johnhoward2798 she said 20 degrees off of temp. So 180 to 160 and then 20-25% off cooking time. It all adds up and quite clear.

20% of 180 is actually 36. Simple arithmetic.

      @ToriaCollects 6 місяців тому +1

@@Mieke3133 you don't take 20% off the 180 (temp) you just take 20 degree off and then 20% off the cooking time so 30mins would be 24mins

"I could not be simpler..." By which you mean, if cooking from chilled / fresh you need to do two calculations but if you're cooking from frozen you need to do one different calculation. So yeah, it could be simpler...
"And you can tell if it's done is by using your food thermometer." Because course we all have one of those, and we all know what the minimum safe temperature for consumption is!

This is pretty bad advice. An air fryer is a fan assisted oven so use the cooking instruction for Fan assisted oven. Don't worry about pre-heating the air fryer, this what gives it a time advantage.

You’d think wouldn’t you but if you do that you’ll burn everything. Most things that say 20 to 30 mins fan oven take 10 minutes in my air fryer.
Don’t know why but air fryers are a lot smaller and the air probably circulates a lot quicker (even when I use a deep pan for easy cleaning).
