  • Hello :)
This is the requested transcription I did of the Grateful Dead version of the song "Catfish John" from their 1977 album "Terrapin Station". Wikipedia has listed this as a "Studio Outtake". What that means I'm not exactly sure? It may or may not have appeared on the original album maybe? The bass player on this track was Phil Lesh.
This transcription can be found at www.muzento.com under Advanced - Learning Songs subject.
I really enjoyed working on this one. It's one of those songs where the more I play it, the more subtle little things I hear and the more I appreciate what Phil did in this song. It's really unique bass playing and deceivingly difficult to play.
This one is all about the rhythm. It's basically just triads and pentatonics, but I love the rhythms and how he uses space. It's a very free and "Jammy" type part, but he's careful not to play too much, nor play on top of the other instruments. He kind of weaves around the other instruments and the vocals. His note and rhythm choices are very unconventional. Just when you think you've got the pattern, he changes things. Every bar is an adventure and a surprise :)
I'm quite sure this would be different every time he played it, which in itself is pretty amazing. To think he can come up with lines like this all the time, it's pretty cool. Wanna talk about underrated bass players... ;)
It was a little tricky to hear the bass in some spots. There are two guitars, plus and organ/keyboards and two drummers. It's a big sound and there's lots of subdivisions going on. I may have blended some of the keyboard's notes and the bass notes (the double stops). If it feels funny, I'm sure you could leave out one of the notes and it would be okay :)
Count, focus on the rhythms and really watch your note duration. The first few tries might be a lot of stop and go, but stick with it and it'll get there. It's really fun to play along with and you'll be glad you did!
I hope you enjoy it :)
Don't forget to like and subscribe and thanks for watching :)

I took acid at my first Grateful Dead concert at the age of 15. During the trip the person sitting in the seat next to me, whom I did not know, who hadn't said one word to me during the whole concert, turned to me and said, "Didn't your parents warn you about places like this?"

@@BassCovers Totally! His phrase tripped me out more than the effects of the drug itself. 🤣

Greg, I really didn't imagine that this song had so many possibilities. After listening to this song two or three times, you end with the choir all day in the head . You are amazing ! But someone hasn't done his homework...

This isn't a Phil Lesh line, but a John Kahn bass line. I don't think the Grateful Dead ever played it, but it was a staple of the Jerry Garcia Band for a long time. The album from which this comes, Reflections, is half Grateful Dead and half JGB. Thanks for the transcription!

Hi Edwin, thanks for the comment and information. I just had a listen to the version of Catfish John from the reflections album and it's really different from the Terrapin Station version. Are you sure it was John Kahn on that version? I'm glad you like the transcription, thanks again :)

@@BassCovers I didn't realize they did this for the Terrapin Station album as an outtake! I only have the vinyl. You are right. It does sound more like Phil than John, especially the double stops. Too bad it didn't make it to the album. I really love Bob and Keith's parts. Much funkier than the Reflections version.

I like the outtake version better too. I wonder why it didn't make the final album? It's groovy as can be, and I think Jerry's vocals sound great...very soulful. Thanks for clearing this up and hope you're enjoying the transcription ;)

Yet another great transcription! And goes to show just how complex the dead music really is. The fact that they were able to pull sutff like this off and play songs for 30 minutes or longer, is a testament to how well they worked together.

Absolutely. I think they really listened to each other and each of them was a fine player in their own right. Thanks!
